March 5, 200818 yr It was unavoidable, The plane needed to be repositioned to London anyway so that the passengers from London to the United States could have a plane to fly on. It's the reality of the airline industry and I'm sure American took a big loss on the flight only carrying 5 people. I doubt that American missed the opportunity to tout their belly freight/mail business, too bad that tidbit slipped though the cracks on the editors desk, but the greenies are all about stirring up controversy anyway because the obvious purpose of that flight was repositioning for the west-bound leg.How did they expect that to happen...disassemble the 777 and ship it by barge? Actually because of the snowy/icy weather in the northeast yesterday our airline Expressjet ( you might know them better as continental express) had to cancel many flights last night so today I was jumpseating on a reposition flight, our company had 3 out of Cleveland today because our outstations didn't have aircraft for there flights cause of the cancellations. We had 4 people in the aircraft , me, the two pilots and the flight attendant serving the flight back from the outstation ( Savannah Georgia) to Cleveland. The airline took a loss but it's had to fly passengers and do business when you don't have an airplane at that airport.
March 5, 200818 yr It would've pwned to be a passenger on that flight. I once flew American from Honolulu to Dallas on a 767 with only about 50 passengers and it was quite awesome.
March 6, 200818 yr If American had not made the effort to get the flight off the books and flew with 100 people, this never would have been reported, since they did try to keep the flight from happening they are being criticized for flying with 5 people.

Whats the big deal? The plane had to be in London for the west bound flight. If it hadnt, then american would have just cancelled the flight because they lost so much money. They still used the same amount of gas. Its rediculous that these tree hugging hippies want to make scene about a flight that was empty. The fact is that flight was leaving whether there were 5 people or 500.

March 7, 200818 yr Admittedly I really think I need a break from hearing about my "carbon footprint" for a while.

March 7, 200818 yr Author I am not a tree hugging hippie. My post was intended to raise an eyebrow over waste. In a time of conservation, it's hard for me to excuse such actions. Do we operate movie theaters for only 1 person? Absolutely! But there is a vast difference in the operation of a movie theater and flying 5 people from US to London. In my heart of hearts, I can't believe this was the only solution.
March 8, 200818 yr Well I just don't want to hear any defense statements for Al Gore when he flys around the world in a sky bus to get his "message" across. well he tried to fly the icarus way...but the sun melted the glue and al fell in the drink...so he decided in the interest of practicality that flying in jets was a better strategy :thumbup

Precisely. Even coach isn't so bad. However, that Nobel medal around his neck might make things a little uncomfortable for other passengers. yeah so he can have a bunch of other people constantly harrassing him about stuff like getting f***ed out of the election, wanting his autograph, his movie, nis nobel prize, etc. etc. etc. im sure he would just love that everywhere he went...its amazing how most of your arguments border on the completely absurd

He shares the same views on global warming as Al Gore, except that Blair flies first class on British Airways, not his own private plane.
March 9, 200818 yr Well I just don't want to hear any defense statements for Al Gore when he flys around the world in a sky bus to get his "message" across. There was no need to bring Al Gore into this discussion in the first place. What you think about Global warming and/or Al Gore is stuff for another thread. Maybe he flies in his private jet because the hot dogs are better.
March 9, 200818 yr Your satire would have been more effective if Gore didn't in actuality have a lot to do with this... Anyway...sure there is. He is indoctrinating the world with this carbon footprint nonsense. This is a classic example of such. What we have is the elite rich trying to evoke cynicism, fear, and economic change among the less well-off American public. The article merely desribes a necessary evil of living in a modern industrialized society. Mr. Gore seems to want us to feel guilty over this while we really have no reason to be. ok...while you dont believe in global warming...about 85% of the reasonably intelligent people on this planet believe that global warming is a threat to our planet and way of life as we know it...and before you go with the ridiculous "oh well at one time that percentage of the world thought the world was flat" fallacy...realize this...there are people who study this stuff every single day of their lives...they dive into the information head first...and this is not their assumption, but their findings through very tedious research over the course of several decades now...but then again...what do they know? they sure arent penguino and his infinite fountain of knowledge that gets sh*t forth upon us
March 9, 200818 yr No, a much greater comparison would have been turn of the century classical physicists who were wondering why all objects did not glow in the dark, despite their mathematical models telling them they did. However, fortunately for us, real science always prevails. And please answer my question: does protecting the environment only go as far as one's tendency to be socially bothered? then why dont professional sports teams just fly first class all the time? why do we allow people to buy jets? why do we allow people to charter flights? why does john madden have to go on a bus? oh god, they are just wastin' a ton of fuel...but really...your argument here has no merit and al gore has nothing to do with this discussion

Professional teams dont fly first class because there is usually 50-100 people associated with the team that need to fly out after a game. You cant always buy 100 first class tickets on a plane. The point is that if Al Gore really cared about saving the environement he would buy a first class ticket and share the carbon waste with 200 other people instead of having his own plane. If the former prime minister of england can fly first class, why cant al gore?

March 10, 200818 yr So why does Al Gore deserve special treatment again? Because sports teams dont fly first class on commerical airlines
