March 21, 200818 yr http://www.sun-sentinel.com/sports/basebal...0,6445981.story Catchers on the mend Catchers Matt Treanor (left calf cramp) and Mike Rabelo (left knee sprain) are improving, but the Marlins won't rule out one of them opening the season on the disabled list. Rabelo, who got hurt March 13 at Viera in a home plate collision with Nationals outfielder Austin Kearns, wasn't optimistic. An MRI revealed the sprain and slight tear. "I haven't spoken to anybody about [the disabled list], but yeah, that would be a possibility," Rabelo said. "I haven't played in a week. We're going to see how the knee feels and what they want to do." The Marlins could place Rabelo on the disabled list retroactive to March 21, meaning he could be activated as early as April 5. Rabelo, who can move the knee up and down but not laterally, will try catching a bullpen today. Treanor will get some at-bats as the designated hitter in a minor league game today, catch in a minor league game Saturday and should see Grapefruit League action Sunday or Monday.
March 21, 200818 yr Baker is making a case to be on the roster if there's opening, he busted his ass down to second on a pop up to 3b that was dropped.
March 21, 200818 yr I honestly hope he does go on the DL just so we can finally see what Baker can do at the MLB level. We'll have plenty of time this year to be wowed by Rabelo at catcher... :whistle

Well he should have gotten his shot after the year he had in AAA last year and the team still didn't give it to him. I'm pulling for him too and I am really not sold at all on Rabelo. That the organization trots him out as our C of the future is a joke.

That the organization trots him out as our C of the future is a joke. I don't remember anyone saying he was the C of the future. The team has even shown what they think by saying from the start that he would be splitting time behind the plate with Matt. I always looked at him as another stop gap player until something better comes along one way or the other. He was just another player thrown into the mix in that trade that temporarliy filled a hole left by the departure of Olivo. I never did get the Baker love story here. He did okay in AAA last year. Nothing eye popping. He didn't even get the Sept call up. Probably because he needed work on his defense. Supposedly he worked on that this off season. Now it's time to see if that carries over to the field.
March 22, 200818 yr Well the good things is that if they do retoactive him from March 21st, he is ready for the Pirate series.
March 22, 200818 yr I'm thinking the Marlins might keep Hoover over Baker if Rableo does start the season on the DL.

It's a shame they would be going with the guy that has some experience and is playing better over the guy some of the fans want. Hoover is a journeyman. Nothing more. It would be nice to actually get Baker some experience. He's going to need to get it at some point or else I don't even know why we keep him around.
March 23, 200818 yr You look at their stats and they are virtually identical give or take a few percentage points. The Marlins could have brought both up last September but instead brought only Hoover up which might be some indicator but with these things you don't know how banged up Baker was, or some other factor out of our sphere of knowledge, so in the end, and it is just a guess, the Marlins if the they need a replacement catcher will go with Hoover until Rabelo is healed.
