Bill Hall Hopes For Trade

According to Tom Haudricourt of the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel, third baseman Bill Hall would prefer to be traded. He's unhappy about losing playing time to Russell Branyan, and believes his willingness to switch positions in each of the last two seasons should've bought him more latitude.

Hall, 28, is hitting .225/.295/.418 in 201 plate appearances. He's a year removed from his last .800+ OPS month. Would positional stability help Hall return to his 35 home run form? Will any team have the patience to find out?

Hall earns $4.8MM this year, $6.8MM in '09, and $8.4MM in '10 (with a $9.25MM option for '11). I can't imagine much of a trade market for him given his recent hitting. Can you think of a team with a need at third or short that would make sense for Hall?

I know, I know. Before any of you jump on me that Cantu is our 3rd basemen and Hall's number are less than desirable, I think with a scenery change and regular playing time Hall can get back to his once great form. He's only 28 and can stroke with the best of them when he is on. I doubt it would happen but the fish would be silly not to at least inquire. Who knows, maybe hall could play a little OF as well.

The payroll numbers and length of commitment seem an immediate deal-killer but beyond that let's see if we can get Jacque Jones hitting first before we think about any other outside the organization reclamation projects.

It's just my opinion, but I think any moves we make should be for pitching. Our offense is gaining it's groove back; runs were and still aren't the concern of this team.

I say we sign Hall if he is capable of catching, pitching "lights out" baseball, and playing centerfield. If he is not that functional, pass.

Uhh, IIRC, he CAN play CF...

can't quite kill 3 birds with one stone though, unless we sign Bugs Bunny

Bill Hall 3b

4 years/$24M (2007-10), plus 2011 club option

re-signed 2/07 (avoided arbitration, $4.125M-$3M)

$0.5M signing bonus

07:$3M, 08:$4.8M, 09:$6.8M, 10:$8.4M

We could use him for two or three seasons until the dominator is ready.

:lol

...and you criticize my knowledge for baseball?

Cantu gets heavily criticized for his defense at 3B...ever seen Bill Hall out there? Not special, by any means.

Not to mention, the "great" Bill Hall, who "we could use for the next 3 years," has a .293 .OBP this year, and a career .318 .OBP, with a career .OPS under .800...

So, cool...lets replace Cantu with a player who's similar to Cantu, despite the fact all this board does is criticize Cantu.

Sort of reminds me when you were all happy when we signed Jacque Jones...remember that?

We could use him for two or three seasons until the dominator is ready.

oh sorry...through all this, his salary skipped my mind.

about 7 mill a year for the 2nd version of Jorge Cantu?

We could use him for two or three seasons until the dominator is ready.

I'm saying if the Marlins sign him, we could use him until Matt Dominguez is ready.Bill Hall sucks, i'm aware of that.If we signed him for only two seasons he wouldn't cost us that much total.

how do you figure?

Have you seen his salary?

Are you automatically expecting the Brewers to take all of it, or something?

For Bill Hall, why not just stay with Jorge Cantu? I can't even say "same sh*t, different smell" this time, b/c looking at Cantu's salary, combined with the #'s, he's actually an upgrade over Hall...

We could use him for two or three seasons until the dominator is ready.

Why, what's wrong with Cantu? Is he disable?

Cantu, who is never going to be confused with Brooks Robinson at third, has nonetheless let his bat do his talking since moving to third spot in the lineup and doing what contact hitters do, making contact and driving in runs - twelve rbi in the last 12 games and the last five games driving in a run in each.

If he stays with the team in 2009, which is the Marlins option, building up arm strength and spending the off-season taking hundreds of balls a day at third could result in very cost-effective, productive and defensively capable third baseman who can play the position until some phenom pushes him aside. He may continue to thrive in the three spot or tail off, I don't pretend to know, but does seem a) more confident at the plate hitting third, and b) appears to have a knowledge of the game to where he can make adjustments at the plate to drive a ball to right or hit a sacrifice fly when called upon to do so.

(And how many times on this board over the years have we bemoaned the inability of the Fish to deliver a sac fly when needed? Plenty.)

He's no one's first choice or maybe for some even their second, I'm convinced he's capable of playing the position in a way that net benefits the Marlins for the rest of this season and perhaps next.

I waffle on bringing up McPherson if he isn't going to play every day, but I would like to see him perhaps called up to play back end of the interleague part of the schedule (I really think you want to play Cantu against the Rays) if for no other reason than to showcase him with July not that far off.

+Edit: Since no one has commented on the above let me add if McPherson were to find his swing in MLs during some showcasing you look at a team like the Royals who (I believe) has hit less homeruns than any team in baseball, 30 to date and zero homeruns from their shortstop combo this season. So I wonder, using them as an example, if he proved capable and they acquired McPherson, could they move Gordon to shortstop to increase their homerun and scoring, an area where they are sadly lacking?

Just a thought.
