July 30, 200817 yr I agree with a lot of the OP's points, but these are long term problems, for this season, we're just going to have to live with the hand we've been dealt. Long term, positions we have to consider are centerfield (hopefully Maybin will take over here), left field (I don't think Willingham is the answer), third base, catcher and first base. Hanley is a keeper at short no matter what obviously, I think Hermida is solid enough that we can stick with him for at least another couple years (although our ballpark is terrible for left-handed hitters), and Uggla is ok for now. Now thats 5 positions that I feel we don't have true long term answers at. You don't fix this type of thing mid season... its going to take time. And everyone's idea of calling up Dallas hardly changes anything in the short term. Hopefully by next season Maybin is ready and looks to be the answer in center, and hopefully Dallas can come in and do the job at third. That would be 2 out of 5 positions... with left, first and catcher left to figure out. Even the great teams usually aren't rock solid at more than 5 or 6 positions at any one time, and we could be set at 5 spots by next year, so I'd say we're on track. To summarize, if you're saying Beinfest sees these problems and will fix this team this year, you are WRONG. If you're saying he realizes long term we need change, I agree 100%, but for this season, just try to enjoy what we've got.
July 30, 200817 yr Author Don't get me wrong, I love the Marlins organization, but it does hurt that we constantly have to subtract in order to add (trading away players for new ones). It certainly helps to be able to drastically improve a position through free agency instead of scouring the trade market. But thats a whole other issue lol.

My dream off season: We get everything in order for the stadium, and we sign Tex to be our first big FA, and new long term first baseman. But meh, that ain't happening.

No need, Logan Morrison is the 1B of the future.
July 30, 200817 yr If you are going to reference the 2003 defense, don't start with Juan Encarnacion lol Completely ignore Castillo, Gonzo, Pudge, Lee, and Pierre. That had to be one of the best defensive infields this game has seen thus far. Completely ignore Mike Lowell....... :whistle
July 30, 200817 yr Jacobs I can see Beinfest getting rid of but Uggla is a keeper. Cody i'm on the fence about. If Maybin can get to the big leagues and if we can get a catcher like Molina that will improve this team alot. Wes at 3rd, Cantu at first. These will be steps in the right direction. I do agree that the all or nothing offense with poor defense isnt what Admin had in mind with this team nor should he. The all or nothing offenses might get you to the playoffs, but I can remember our 2003 squad beating some high powered offenses with just timely hitting and great pitching.. of: Willingham Maybin Hermida 3rd: Helms/ some one else ss: Hanley 2nd Ugla 1st: Cantu Catcher: contact hitter rotation: JJ, Nolasco, Olsen, Sanchez, volstad current bullpen bench: amezaga, trainer, Ross, and a few others something like that is a start.. That's the team we have now minus Jacobs. I wouldn't put all of our defensive woes on Jacobs shoulders. Also, Helms is a nice bench player, and pinch hitter, but he is not a starter. Just ask the Phillies.
July 30, 200817 yr I'd much rather win the so-called "wrong" way than compromise our chance of winning. 100 times this!!! The bottom line is the bottom line. The means doesn't matter much. Just win baby win! I'm actually quite surprised that you are the one that posted that knowing how you love stats and all. Please, by no means take that as some kind of shot. Just an observation.
July 30, 200817 yr Tick, tock. Tick, tock. 27 hours until the trade deadline. Don't get too excited, we never really make any big moves at the deadline, although we also expect to :mischief

Don't get too excited, we never really make any big moves at the deadline, although we also expect to :mischief We don't make moves unless we're in the race....a la '97 (Dutch) and '03 (Conine). The catcher issue must be addressed. If we got Pudge (fat chance, I know), I would run around screaming like I did when we brought Niner back.
July 30, 200817 yr When you say: "Guys like Uggla, Jacobs, and Ross just don't fit this teams mindset. Guys like Willingham and Hermida have the right mentality," you lose me, OP. Uggla leads all 2d basemen in SLG, and is neck and neck with Utley in OPS. Meanwhile, Hermida is a mediocre MLB rightfielder in all respects, and Hammer, when he's hitting, is an average leftfielder. I don't know what you mean by mindset, but you win baseball games with runs, and Uggla produces as many as any other 2B in the league. If Beinfest leaves, I hope you don't get the job, OP.

All of Uggla's stats are skewed by the homerun (which if you read my post, I state is not something you can consistently rely on). Jacobs and Ross also live and die by the long ball, which is fine, but doesn't fit the Admin Beinfest model. Willingham and Hermida at least seem open to drawing a walk here or there, maybe even staying back and spraying it opposite field.

You're actually wrong about the team mindset though, which is the worst part about this. We hear about how we need to be "patient", but then we get reports of Presley asking Hanley, Hermida, and Willingham to be aggressive.
