July 30, 200817 yr We all know the philosophy of this front office has always revolved around pitching, defense, and a manufacturing offense. Just because we are currently the exact opposite of that, doesn't mean Beinfest & Co. have lost sight of their principles. You know that they are not happy at what they see. They also know that an average catcher or reliever will not put this team over the top. This offseason there will be transactions that bring us closer to the baseball this FO is convinced is the best blueprint for success. Guys like Uggla, Jacobs, and Ross just don't fit this teams mindset. Guys like Willingham and Hermida have the right mentality, but need to start producing at the level most of us feel they are capable of. At least the pitching staff is seemingly well on its way to becoming a quality, unrelenting staff. This isn't about the loss tonight. I'm not just posting something out of bitterness. These high power number, low average, bad defenders are just not part of the blueprint. As much as we love these guys and have seen them blossom into major leaguers, they just aren't the right fit, and Beinfest knows it. I mean we lead the majors in strikeouts and are near the top in errors. We used to pride ourselves in succeeding in those areas. We used to pride ourselves in winning low scoring ballgames. Having pride is areas of the game you can actually control, pitching and defense, rather than home runs, which 95% of the time require an error by the other team.
July 30, 200817 yr I agree with you in the sense that there has to be some rounding out of this teams' offensive capabilities, and I've been saying this for a while. We need some good contact hitters in the line-up. I don't see the Marlins getting any offensive upgrades, but I think if they do acquire Molina it would definitely help address this issue. As for Beinfest, he has some really good cards he can deal out. We have decent ballplayers that are expendable, so it will be interesting to see what he does as the deadline nears.
July 30, 200817 yr Unfortunately, I think major changes will be happening. I can't see this team staying together very long. To sloppy on defense and rely to much on homers.

July 30, 200817 yr beinfest sees the things we see guys. he just cant make moves quickly thoguh. he knows what we need and dont worry, well get it
July 30, 200817 yr You gotta play the cards your dealt. Without increasing the payroll it will be hard to put a sound defensive team, that scratches out runs. You have to take the good with the bad, so I can't see many changes for the short-term e.g. trading deadline.
July 30, 200817 yr I don't know if Ross is a guy that needs to be gotten rid of. His defense is superb and he does a reasonable job offensively too.
July 30, 200817 yr Problem is that you need to have great starting pitching if you want to rely more on defense. Do the Marlins really have that?
July 30, 200817 yr cosign threadstarter. and thats one reason i loved the 2003 marlins such a defensive orientated team. had encarnacion who had no errors the entire season and lowell was nasty that year 2
July 30, 200817 yr If you are going to reference the 2003 defense, don't start with Juan Encarnacion lol
July 30, 200817 yr Jacobs I can see Beinfest getting rid of but Uggla is a keeper. Cody i'm on the fence about. If Maybin can get to the big leagues and if we can get a catcher like Molina that will improve this team alot. Wes at 3rd, Cantu at first. These will be steps in the right direction. I do agree that the all or nothing offense with poor defense isnt what Admin had in mind with this team nor should he. The all or nothing offenses might get you to the playoffs, but I can remember our 2003 squad beating some high powered offenses with just timely hitting and great pitching.. of: Willingham Maybin Hermida 3rd: Helms/ some one else ss: Hanley 2nd Ugla 1st: Cantu Catcher: contact hitter rotation: JJ, Nolasco, Olsen, Sanchez, volstad current bullpen bench: amezaga, trainer, Ross, and a few others something like that is a start..
July 30, 200817 yr If you are going to reference the 2003 defense, don't start with Juan Encarnacion lol why not??? dude played great defense that year and had no errors the entire year
July 30, 200817 yr If you are going to reference the 2003 defense, don't start with Juan Encarnacion lol Completely ignore Castillo, Gonzo, Pudge, Lee, and Pierre. That had to be one of the best defensive infields this game has seen thus far.

July 30, 200817 yr I'd much rather win the so-called "wrong" way than compromise our chance of winning.
July 30, 200817 yr Author The guys have just exceeded expectations all season. With two months left in the season, we have grown accustom to this overachieving. But they are now showing signs of what most expected them to be before the season. Its just hard to consistently max out your potential, which we are asking the majority of these players to do.
