McPherson's speed

Featured Replies

I was seeing the Mcpherson stats in AAA and he has 13 SB and 39 HR... he could be a 20-20 guy in the mayors

That being said many people think Dallas Mcpherson cant play the outfield cause of his nspeed but his SB shows he has some speed and can come up if Hermida or Hammer keep on struggling

better than hermida speed in the outfield

Speed isn't all that matters in the OF, an OFer that has good instincts and good routes can make a fast OFer look like Manny Ramirez, a lot of the time fast OFers make those running, diving plays because they made a bad read on the ball.

That being said, if McPherson were with us, it'd be as a 1B/3B

All this mcpherson talk is beginning to remind me of omgnunez

McPherson was tried in the outfield earlier this season and the results were 1/3 of his error total so far this season, in a two week period. He had trouble with the lights and losing the ball. What I understand is that the lights at Dolphin Stadium are worse for baseball, so that would only magnify the problem were he transitioned to the outfield at this point in the season.

Would he have eventually made the adjustment? Probably with his talent the answer was yes but once he proved he could play third base (and a little 1st just to keep the rumors flowing) everyday the experiment ended. The problem definitely wasn't his speed or reflexes. (and if anyone is curious I probably listened to 30 of the 'Topes first fifty games. You can too. Most games are archived in Gameday audio and are still there)

When he first started playing in Albuquerque he had been injured in spring training after coming back from multiple back surgeries and was rusty as hell. His spring training was the first month of the season. Once he got untracked you can see what he's accomplished. I'll take John Gall's word for it when he says, "He's special in the entire game of baseball. There's only a handful of guys in the major leagues who can do what he does. To watch some of the balls he hits, I should pay admission like the rest of the people."

People talk about Jake being the guy who is blocking McPherson's rise to the bigs. I think that's only partially true. The guy who is really in his way is Wes Helms who it's been written has been a positive influence in the clubhouse and on the field and the Marlins justifiably aren't going to kick him to the curve to make room for McPherson. Jake is just the most convenient way.

I just hope people have tempered expectations of this player. And no, I dont care what John Gall says, to be quite honest. For all we know McPherson is John Gall #2. I am sorry if I seem negative towards McPherson. I am willing to give him a shot, but I dont think he is more than a bench player in MLB and I could care less about monster stats in Albuquerque.

Now there's a surprise. :whistle

I for one don't think he'll come up and be Albert Pujols or anything, I just think he'll be a better hitter than Jake and provide average defense at third, and Cantu average at first, thereby upgrading the IF defense making things better

I dont know why anyone would care what John Gall has to say. He is not an analyst, he is just a mediocre AAAA player that should of retired long ago to pursue more lucrative interests. Maybe real estate or Wall Street.

Who knows what he'd accomplish? Certainly not me. But you look at the trends in hits, walks (up), strikeouts(down), rbis, HRs, average and OBP, and he keeps getting better as his season progresses. Post ASB, (off the top of my head) he's hitting something like .340 and OBPing around .470. I don't care what league you're in, those are numbers to pay attention to.

Do they translate to MLB numbers? Of course not. While a few here think they know more than professional ballplayers, coaches and managers in the league on his team as well as opponents, I'll defer to them every time.

Outstanding posting, this is an excellent observation. Helms is holding back McPherson not Jake. However it is time to move Cantu to first and bring up Dallas. We are not getting better by keeping him in that Softball League know as the PCL nor is he. There is no further need for him to continue padding his numbers any more. Defensively he is superior to Cantu and with the pitching that we have right now it makes a huge difference

What we do is call him up on the last day of August, the rosters expand the next day so it won't hurt the bench. Then he gets his shot, and if it pans out he can go to the post season with us, and if not we can bury him in the big-ass roster.

we need to either call up mcpherson or trade him. he signed a one year deal so he's gone after this season. if he spends the whole time in the minors it's just a waste of money. if we trade jacobs for a catcher we should move cantu to 1st and bring up mcpherson to play 3rd.

he'll be up september 1st when the roster expansions begin

exactly, my big question is who will get to start when Jacobs or Cantu gets the day off, Helms or McPhearson? i think the answer is Helms?

Both he and Cantu are under Marlins control for multiple years.

How long?

I think it's two for Cantu and 3 for McDallas

Ask Nny to do the math. Actually he knows already and has posted it here. He can correct me, but I think Cantu is 2 (2009-10) and McPherson, three (2009-11). They'll be arbitration elgible but still under the team's control.
