Theoretical Baseball (Bullpen) Question.

Featured Replies

So I was thinking of this the other day, and I was wondering all of your thoughts on this.

Would you take a guy on your team who would guarantee that he would give up one and ONLY one run each inning he pitched?

The guy would obviously have a hideous ERA of 9.00, but would make a good player to have, in my opinion, for a ninth inning with a two run lead, or the eighth and ninth inning if your team has a three run lead.

I know that you might rather take the 25 man roster spot for a MLB average reliever with an ERA of 4.50ish, but that reliever will have some scoreless outings and some blown save explosion outings. If you knew how to use Mr. 9.00 ERA correctly, I think he would be a valuable addition to a ballclub.

I was wondering what everyone else thought, so discuss please!

--Obviously, this is all in your imagination, hence a theoretical question. I know this could never happen and no pitcher with an ERA anywhere near 9.00 would ever stick around in the bigs--

This is pretty cool, hypothetically speaking, and yes, given your explanation I would take such a pitcher if there was some magical guarantee of only one run per inning... it would be statistically staggering though to see such a thing, but to know with a 3 run lead going into the 8th you can send that guy out and win, shoot, I'd take it

It could also be useful in certain emergency situations such as the bases being loaded, specifically if you're not willing to risk allowing a couple of runs by using another pticher and the game is pretty close.

Never even thought about that.

Thats some deep thinking man lol Hell Yeah id take a guaranteed only 1 run. Anyday of the week.

No, in that situation he'd give up 5 runs. Inherited runners don't go towards ERA, iirc.

No, I don't want the guy b/c that guy does not exist, nor will he ever exist.

If you're a reliever and your ERA is at 9, you don't belong in the big leagues. First off, giving up a run per inning sucks. Second, you'd give every single one of your fans a heart attack every outing.

So no...don't want the guy.

Wait...a pitcher who will give up one run every outing but will still keep us in the game as long as its a lead of more than one run?

We have this guy already...

its Kevin Gregg!

If Kevin Gregg was that reliever he would'nt have 6 blown saves.

Really? I could've sworn Gregg's ERA was at 2.38, entering the day. :|

Perhaps you skipped past the part that said "Theoreticalbaseball question".

How would it give the fans a heart attack every time he came out? He would only give up one run per inning, so you would already know what was coming. It's just an imaginary point of view...

True. But my imagination isn't great. I'm more of the realistic type.

Realistic...this would never really happen. Ever.

Imagination...I guess.
