Stadium on Jai-alai Site?

Marlins stadium on jai-alai site?

Major-league baseball in Mangonia Park?

Promoter Don King, who owns 54 acres where the now-defunct Palm Beach Jai-Alai building stands, has proposed a dual use for the property -- boxing and baseball.

King purchased the building and land more than two years ago for an estimated $14 million, hoping to convert it into a boxing arena. With those plans on hold, King's camp got another idea while watching a World Series telecast.

"The announcer said something about the Marlins needing a new home," publicist Robert Weneck said. "They were saying they needed a 40,000-seat arena and where would they go? They said there were no large tracts of land in Florida."

It didn't take King long to respond.

"(Marlins manager) Jack McKeon is 72 years old; I'm 72 years old," King said. "I'd be more than willing to sacrifice my dream to help out a world championship baseball team. The land is there, the opportunity is there."

While the Marlins are concentrating on downtown Miami, a site in northern Palm Beach County likely would be dismissed as impractical. But Weneck points out that Mangonia Park is the northernmost stop on Tri-Rail.

"As far as growth, you've got to think 10 years down the road," he said. "The people that attend Marlins games come from as far north as Vero Beach. Don bought 54 acres; you need 30-35 for the stadium. This would leave 20 more for a hotel."

Marlins officials were not available for comment.

He's right, you have to think down the road.

If the stadium were in Palm Beach, we could remain the "Florida Marlins."

It's RIGHT on tri-rail.

It's got extra space for extra things.

That would be a perfect place. A LOT of fans are from Broward/Palm Beach, and they would go to many more games (me included).

Financially, sentimentaly, a great idea from every aspect.

first of all, i dont want to push this team so up north.

second of all, and most importantly... i dont want the Marlins to have to do ANYTHING with Don King.

you would lose the entire Dade fan base

i think it is closer to go to St. Pete than to go to PBC!

PBC Rocks!

PBC is worse than Broward!

Some of you guys are living in a fantasy land.

It would be crazy enough if they put the stadium in Broward but Palm Beach?

You guys are messed up!

you would lose the entire Dade fan base

No you wouldn't.

And there is more potential up north.

All the northern counties have to drive south to get to the Pro.

Now only two counties have to go north (and Broward is still close). More counties/population are near the team. And Miami has already proved they don't deserve this team.

Like I said, you have to look into the future, here.

You guys are messed up! There is a huge fan base in Palm Beach.

Not to mention a wealthy one.

No you wouldn't.

All of them!?!?!

s***!

There is two!

And there is nearly as many people in Miami driving north as there are people driving south:

Miami: 2.3 million

Broward & Palm Beach: 2.5 million

Plus!

Has anyone drove north on I95 in Miami on a weekday just to get to the Pro!?!?! It takes 40 minutes from Downtown!

Now go to Broward and (God forbid) Palm Beach! You're talking about a 2 hour drive.

And Miami has already proved they don't deserve this team.

Really?

The stadium is in MIAMI-Dade County but it is not in Miami!

The stadium is closer to Broward as it is to Downtown Miami. And driving south on I-95 is a lot quicker than driving north.

Like I said, you have to look into the future, here. Not only that WC... but you would gain on other counties... like Osceola, Orange, Brevard. Bigger fan base. I like the idea.

no way :thumbdown . what is the population of palm beach county anyways. it cant be that big. plus u would lose all the dade fan base and yes there is one.

There are alternatives to Broward and PBC. US HWY 1, A1A, FLTP, US HWY 27 (Western Alternative).

All of them!?!?!

s***!

There is two!

The fan base isn't soley Dade/Broward/Palm beach, you know. We have fans more northern, and western.

Miami: 2.3 million

Broward & Palm Beach: 2.5 million

Where the hell do you get that number?

Broward and Palm Beach must have 2.5 million a peice, not combined. And don't forget, Palm Beach county is still expanding. Like I said, you still must take the future into account.

Really?

The stadium is in MIAMI-Dade County but it is not in Miami!

And it still takes me an hour+ to get to the game from the most southern part of Palm Beach County (Boca). And like I said, there's a wealthier fan base in Palm Beach.

population numbers from tri-rail as of 1997, broward and pbc have grown more than miami in this time due to the fact miami is almost built out.

Tri-Rail's federally-defined "Service Area" serves approximately 4,000,000 residents, including roughly 2 million in Dade, 1.25 million in Broward and .75 million in Palm Beach counties.

remember Lee and Collier counties can access palm beach using S.R. 80 or Palm Beach Blvd. which takes you from Downtown Fort Myers to I-95/Turnpike basically.
