Stadium on Jai-alai Site?

Featured Replies

I would guess they had. It's not like they didn't know it exists. Do you really think Palm Beach is sitting there saying "I'd pay for the stadium but they have to ask me nicely first"?

Had a REAL piece of land that they could actually build a stadium upon ever been available?

Why talk with a county that has no land to build on?

Well, now there's land. Josh, with all due respect, you're freaking clueless. You're a 14-year old kid that doesn't know what you're talking about but figures if you say it enough times you'll sound like an authority.

North Palm Beach is impractical. The land itself is not a big problem. It wasn't a big problem for John Henry. It's not a big problem now. They can find the land, in any of the three counties. The problem is coming up with the money for the stadium itself. And if you think that Palm Beach County wants to pay for it, you're talking out of your a##. You're making it up as you go along. You don't have a clue. I don't know that they don't want to pay for it and you don't know that they do.

I'd rather the stadium be in Palm Beach too but Miami-Dade is the only government to step up. So if they're paying for the stadium, they get to pick where it goes.

If you're so sure of this, call the Palm Beach County Commission tomorrow and express your ideas. Find out who your local commissioner is and call him/her. See what they say.

Imagine living in Kendall.

There are probably 600,000 people there.

How the hell are you gonna constantly make the drive to North Dade let alone Palm? Beach County?

rofl, If all you're doing is trying to accomodate fans in Kendall, you may as well give up. It takes an hour to drive TEN FEET in Kendall, much less all the way to downtown Miami, Pro Player, or anywhere else in the tri-county area...

i had this argument with someone on another board.

it is completely BRAINLESS to have a professional sports franchise based in palm beach county. the only people who would argue otherwise are people who LIVE in palm beach county, that's it.

why do you think essentially every *successful* sports franchise is located in a large market? ladies and gentlemen, this is about MONEY. how much money do you expect a sponsor to dish out for a small market audience? the local economy of miami-dade county dwarfs that of palm beach. the population in dade is also much greater; palm beach, on the other hand, is sparsely populated considering its size. northern palm beach county is quite possibly the worst site ever. even boca fans (like you, wild card) would essentially have to drive almost an hour to get there. by moving the team there, you essentially give up the bulk of your fan base located in dade and most of broward county (note that it's a shorter drive to PPS than it is to mangonia park from broward). i dont know if you realize how far mangonia park is, wildcard, but i suggest you pull out mapquest for this one.

the amount of money sponsors would pay for a team located out in the boonies is much smaller than the amount they would pay for large market teams. keep that in mind. if you want a franchise to be financially viable enough to support a $70M payroll, palm beach county is out of the question. hell, they couldn't even support the florida bobcats.

i'm FROM palm beach county and i'm willing to admit this idea is idiotic.

Some of you are too funny. Yeah, Don King is going to build a stadium for the Marlins in North Palm Beach. Get a hold of yourselves.

I never said Don King would would build it... I said I liked the idea of it being in PBC.

This thread is based on unfounded speculation by the Palm Beach Post and should be put away. Mods, please do your magic.

PBC doesnt need the Marlins to knock on their door if they want the stadium and are willing to try to work things out fianancially the way that Miami-Dade is trying now. They know the Marlins want a stadium, they could get involved. Jeffrey Loria lives in Palm Beach County. Until such a day comes, if a stadium is built, it will built where they work out a deal.

actually i heard on another board that they know of a county commissioner from palm beach approaching the marlins with a ballpark pitch. the marlins wouldnt even schedule them a meeting.

regardless, i enjoy arguing about things when i know i'm going to win the argument, so lets leave the thread as it is :whistle

Is PBC the centerplace of the Marlins' potential fan base?

Is it near a reliable source of public transit that runs late into the night and on weekends?

Baseball games are played 7pm weeknights and 1pm weekends, folks. You want a stadium downtown where a large amount of people can get off work, get a bite to eat and go to the stadium. Stadiums surrounded by miles of parking lots and suburbs are best suited for sports that only play on weekend afternoons.

I live in Kendall. There are approximately 250,000 people living in what is considered Kendall (Kendall is part of unincorporated Miami-Dade county, NOT it's own city). Any census figures you might find are only for a small section of the area that we call Kendall, not the entire area. And don't forget the other areas of South Dade with similar demographics as Kendall such as Cutler Ridge and yes, Homestead. You're talking about a solid 400,000 people living in those areas.

To suggest that people from Kendall and South Dade don't go to games is absolutely ludicrous. Pratically everyone I know from Kendall goes to Marlins games when they can. It is a largely middle-class suburban area with kids all over the place. It is an ABSOLUTE chore to drive to games at PPS from Kendall or anywhere else in South Dade. You have to go north with rush-hour traffic, a good 1 hour +. A stadium in Broward or Palm Beach would eliminate much of that potential fan base. Funny how no one here has said anything about ignoring the fans in South Dade, like if we never existed. I'll go as far as saying that much of Dade's fan base lives from Kendall southward.

Needless to say, a stadium in downtown Miami is MUCH more convenient for us in the southern part of the metro area. Only a 15 minute drive to the Metrorail station, then a 30 minute ride up to downtown. I've done this trip many times for Heat and Panthers games when they were both at Miami Arena.

3 months ago there almost was no fan base in Dade

And there was one in Broward and Palm Beach counties I suppose? ;)

That would be great for me!

I still think that they should build a stadium in Broward.

Many fans are from Martin and Palm Beach, seriously it would be way to far to drive to Miami Beach!

Broward is right in the middle of Palm Beach and Miami Dade, equal distance to drive.

SOUNDS FAIR!

***Most of their seasn ticket holders live in Broward and Palm Beach! What does that say???***

Here's a story in today's Miami Herald about the breakdown of Marlins attendance by county:

Herald Article

Only 12% from Palm Beach County, and 40% each from Broward and Dade. Season ticket distribution is 45% Broward, 37% Miami-Dade, and 13% PB. Not a huge difference at all between Broward and Dade if you ask me.

I strongly agree with the article mentioning that any fans you might lose from northern Broward and PB would be made up for by fans gained from Dade, especially South Dade, and I would add the Upper Keys (Key Largo) to that as well.

I don't disagree that a stadium site near PPS would be convenient for the entire

tri-county region, but if Broward County politicians don't have any interest in a new stadium, then perhaps people should direct their complaints to them.

It says that a drive north from Miami to PPS is a lot tougher than a drive south from Broward and PBC to PPS.

These stats are not reliable.

It is like saying AJ Burnett is not a good pitcher because his ERA was over 4 this season.

If the stadium was in Downtown Miami, the Broward and PBC fans would have a fairly easy drive South compared to the Miami fans driving North.

Comprende?

You are correct. A stadium downtown means fans from ALL directions would be going opposite to rush-hour traffic. That's probably a reason why most cities have their stadiums downtown.

That is a good reason but say if there were no traffic anywhere: Would you rather go to a ballpark in the Golden Glades or in a downtown?

Man... you people complain for everything.

Complain for everything?

Some idiot brings up how great a stadium in Palm Beach is - we let him know he is a dumbass!

I'd like it There (Jai Alai) Since i LIVE in Palm Beach County, But thats me :)

I think the fronton complex has quite a few problems:

1. Number of entrances. If I recall correctly, there's only one: on the 45th Street side. A stadium would require multiple entrances from multiple roads.

2. Land space. Is the entire complex large enough for a stadium, no less a parking lot?

3. Suppose expansion of the complex is approved if there is not enough space. You don't think the residents of Mangonia Park aren't going to fight that tooth and nail in order to prevent their houses from being taken away via eminent domain?

Building at the fronton complex can open up a huge can of worms.

This is the worst idea I have heard involving a stadium yet. Not only is it pushed so far north that you lose all of your ticket buying Dade people, but you have Don King involved! Incredibly stupid. Ideas like this are the reason people look at South Florida and shake their head.

Great point Juanky! That is just asking to get ripped off!
