This happened to us earlier in the season. Right now the Mets are in 1st place with only a half a game lead over the Phils, hypothetically, if we were to sweep the series against the mets, still being 5.5 games out, and the Phils manage to continue winning, we are only helping the Phils. We will be gaining games on the Mets but not the Phils. To make matters worse we begin a series with the Braves who have owned us this season...
August 26, 200817 yr Well, this is basically asking the question "Do you know we're in 3rd place, not 2nd?" And the answer to that question, is yes. It just means we have to beat out two teams instead of one.

August 26, 200817 yr If we want to really be in the Playoffs, we need to make adjustments, we have not done that all year, other teams have made adjustments, thus the cold streak of our hitters. Most importantly we have yet to hit our stride, our longest win streak of the 2nd half is TWO! Nobody is going to make the playoffs that way, a win streak of 6+ games is the only way we can stay in the race
August 26, 200817 yr We need to just take care of our games. As long as we keep winning we will be fine. it just has to be close the last few weeks 2 or 3 games and if we can make a push then we will be in i think but our damn hittters need to get a clue.

August 26, 200817 yr But I don't think we've lost more than 3 in a row either. We still need a good push to make things interesting. Last night on ESPN during the Phillies broadcast they were talking about the flaws of the three teams "in it". And who'd a thought at the all star break that the Marlins and Phillies offense would be what keeps them out of the division lead. They had "Mets: Bullpen;Phillies: Offense; Marlins: Offense".

August 27, 200817 yr The math is against us, we have to go on a historic run to win it. Also one of the teams ahead of us needs to meltdown. Hopefully, we can cut down the lead a little bit and then absolutely crush the division leader.
