Fernandez memorial Info
Hey everyone! It's been years since I've posted. But this whole thing has brought me back here. Just can't believe what's happening. I live down the block from his family, and I had no idea until I drove by to go to work on Monday and there were cops, news vans, balloons, and flowers out front. Seeing his family and friends outside almost every day this week has made me break down every time. I had to stop by and drop off balloons one night because I was so distraught. And it just always hits me every time that this guy was one of us. Seeing his family, his abuela, his tios and tias, it was like seeing one of my friends' families mourning. The Marlins will never be the same. I absolutely can't handle this. I've cried every day. I will never forget this week, the Sunday morning the news broke, the night I went to the viewing, seeing his family outside of their home grieving. Sucks that a team and a city I love so much has to go through so much pain right now. I feel so bad for the fellas on the team.

Team Colors and New Logo
I cannot wait until the merchandise hits stores, personally. I love EVERYTHING about the new logo and I can now actually rock Marlins gear when I go out instead of something that looks like a dead fish. Of course, I'm speaking specifically of the hat. I hope they don't mess up the uniforms, but, so far, I like it. I just can't stand traditional logos. I hate the Yankees logo. I especially hate the Phillies logo. And logos like the Mets (which remind me of the Expos logos) are AWFUL! I honestly think that there is only one good logo in baseball and they are getting rid of it. The Blue Jays. And now the new Marlins logo. Pretty nice if you ask me

Cuban MLBers game at FIU
yea it was cancelled. the liason that was supposed to set everything for fiu couldnt get anywhere with the crew at the field. i think it might have had something to do with the team using the field. also, they are thinking of honoring andrew dawson before the game but they are still working on it

Cuban MLBers game at FIU
Awesome to see this. My grandfather is the one putting this together. The one in Tamiami was HUGE and it was for the Cell4Cuba Campaign to send cell phones to Cuba. And some of these guys can still get nasty with it

New Stadium Art
love the orange bowl letters idea. the grooms marlins homerun thing can work if it has craploads of lights and lazers and sh!t. still on the fence about that though

Any chance the Stadium gets completed early?
Yeah, even if it is ahead of schedule, it won't be ahead by an entire year. However, I will have to hand it to the construction team because they are way ahead of schedule.

Advertising
Do you actually think that the Marlins, the team with the most shameless promotions (and actually unleashed something called the Marlins Manatees), will show restraint in ad placement throughout the stadium? I have no problems with advertising on outfield walls. Even Fenway has the CVS and WB Mason ads on the Green Monster. However, the Red Sox maintain a sense of prestige by refusing to partake in these flashy promotional gimicks. They certainly don't have dancing fat men. I know it's nice to feel so about it all but the fact is that the fans LIKE the Manatees. They enjoy the Super Saturdays. I really don't get the issue. Who said there was an issue? If the fans (with a special emphasis on the season ticket holders) really want these things, then I see no issue. However, based on the outcry here when the Manatees were unveiled, I'm skeptical that most of the devoted fans appreciate them (but that's not important). The point is that if prestige were to be a major concern (and the fact that people are concerned about stadium seat color and the appearance of the outfield walls is obsessive to the point where I would no longer classify the phenomenon as mere excitement or anticipation), it is a bit unreasonable to expect anything else from one of the more shameless marketing divisions in MLB. I guess I took you calling it shameless as a negative, saying there was an issue. And yeah, there was a lot of bitching when the Manatees were announced, but that's mostly because of the jokes that were being made from the outside. I know you don't live down here (or I think) so you don't go to the games, but the Manatees get some of the biggest ovations every time they come out. noyce (Australian for nice)

Advertising
oh and everytime i think about a baseball stadium (mostly a classic stadium) the fact that they advertise on outfield walls always pops into my head. in cuba, american companies like hersheys advertised on the walls of the ballparks there. in fact, im actually on the lookout for wall ads when i go to a stadium. i think its actually part of the class of the game. to businesses, it defines baseball as a way of reaching out to ppl, and to baseball, it's a way of recognizing their impact.

What Food will the New Stadium Specialize in
Gonna be hard to beat Land Shark's dogs. Not really. You're one of the few people I know that reeeeeeeeaally likes those hot dogs. Those hot dogs are nothing special... UNLESS you put those banana peppers on there and add a lot of relish. I think they are pretty good after you go through that necessary process

What would you like to see in the new stadium?
How about no more Mermaids and Manatees? Real baseball teams don't resort to such unconventional and nontraditional marketing tactics. Honestly, I dont mind looking at the mermaids. Marlins are a new team compared to the Red Sox or Cubs. New times mean new ideas.. Yea, losing the Mermaids and Manatees seems like a bad idea to me. The Mermaids have gotten hotter every year and the Manatees are hilarious and everyone loves them

Hanley's Status
He's not necessarily in pain all the time. He could be sitting out because when he runs (meaning, when he fields or bats or runs) he feels the pain. I think if he'd be feeling pain constantly, he'd be examined and put on the DL because that's not the kind of stuff you recover from by just sitting out 4 games. I don't really know what to say about Hanley. When he took himself out of a game earlier in the season, I was convinced that he was being a diva. But I don't know, from all the shots they have of him training and talking to his teammates, he doesn't seem like a Manny Ramirez type - he seems more like a kid now I really think that Hanley has an extremely different view of the game then Manny does. Manny just talks about himself and how he did. I really believe that Hanley is dedicated to this team. Sure he's had his moments, but baseball is a frustrating sport and can be a frustrating business. It happens. It's just the volatility that he has at times angers me. The thing about the haircut, and about getting hit by a pitch. In the end, he does come around but that kind of stuff makes me wonder. As I said though, lately he seems to be enjoying himself and playing the game modestly (he's not acting like he's some type of a superstar; he's interacting in a positive manner with his teammates, etc.) OH God. Here we go. Now we are trying to make Hanley out to be a Carlos Beltran kinda guy. I mean maybe Hanley's a little fresh sometimes but he is no drama queen. He doesn't exaggerate injuries and act like a premadonna in the way Beltran or some other players do. The pitch thing, to me, is understandable ESPECIALLY if you are extremely competitive. What that shows is that Hanley is a very competitive guy. All he needed to do to keep my mouth shut about him was sign an extension. Since he did that, I feel comfortable with Hanley. Can we at least all be patient for him to recover? He is the best player on our team and easily among the top players in the league. I think we should relax.

Sellouts
to be honest i could give three f***s if there are gunna be 81 sellouts or not. as long as we get more than 20,000 a night im fine. i think thats reasonable

We got Ayala!
If he gets that Marlin Miracle juice and just has a nasty year for the sole reason he is on the Marlins, I would be very happy. Regardless, no matter how "low risk" this signing was I still think it was well-needed, especially with a thin bullpen.

I believe contruction has begun...

Marlins' TV ratings
Henry firesale?? My bad. Didn't mean to criticize Henry for doing a firesale. My main criticism of Henry is getting us no where stadium-wise. And then he used us to make way for his purchase of the Red Sox.

Sellouts
I honestly do think the location will make a huge difference. As has been discussed, we have decent TV ratings, so there is definitely interest in the team. Due to Landshark's location, NO ONE can walk to the game and there are very few people who can take public transit. When the new stadium comes up in Little Havana, at least hundreds of thousands of people will be within walking distance, and millions will be able to take public transportation. Does this all add up to sellouts and a reinvigorated fan base? That remains to be seen, but I definitely think it bodes well. EDIT: not to mention that the people who do drive to the game may not have to drive as far, or at the very least will be near an area that has "things to do". Landshark is more or less in the middle of nowhere and far away from everybody. Actually, I live in Broward County and the new park is so much further away than Land Shark Stadium. I live in North Broward ( Coral Springs ). The distance from my house to Dolphin stadium is 29 miles and 33 minutes. From my house to the Ornage Bowl is 42 miles and 49 minutes. The difference 13 miles and 16 minutes is really not that much. When you consider you will get a brand new stadium, no rain-outs or rain delays, air conditioned when it is 95 degrees outside in July, August, Sept., better concessions, better sight lines, and more comfortable seating, it really is a no brainer. Miami is more densely populated than Ft. Lauderdale/Broward, so you will have a better chance of drawing bigger crowds. You will also be 1.5 miles away from downtown, so you will get a lot of people who "walk up" to the stadium on game day. For me it would have been nice to have the stadium at the Popamo Park casino, but after trying to get a new stadium built for so many years this was the teams only option that the county and city would approve and it still almost got voted down. We should feel fortunate we are getting a new stadium. Dolphin stadium is not a good place at all to watch a baseball game. Those who are serious baseball fans understand why. I'm glad you see things that way. It seems way too many people have a closed mind about traveling a hell of a distance to catch a game. I have been doing it for the Marlins and Dolphins all the time and it's fun to take a trip. But the fun stops when you have no idea whether it's gunna rain and you don't know whether to leave the house and risk a long drive to the stadium. Also, I think it's important for people to realize that the best thing the team could have done (besides building the stadium in downtown) was build the stadium in its current location. I had a rough time believing that a stadium in Broward would fix the attendance woes. It seemed like an easy formula to me: Put the stadium where there are SHITLOADS of people.

Marlins' TV ratings
if the marlins are gonna pay the least in the majors for their players, it should cost the least in the majors for a ticket to watch them. yep, it is a business, and Loria is stealing from all of our pockets. No it shouldn't. I could think of many other reasons why it should cost less to watch a team. (Keep in mind this is just a general analysis which does not specifically relate to the Marlins): 1) sh*tty stadium. 2) sh*tty access. 3) The shittiest team in baseball, etc. Payroll should not have any bearing on ticket prices. Stadium experience and team performance come way before payroll. And even then, team performance will not always dictate ticket price. But I guess it is a good way to revert everyone's attention from your previous ridiculous post about the Marlins being above average when it comes to ticket prices (which, of course, cannot be further from the truth). But, hey, you can go ahead and make up your own sh*t on your own time. And not to mention, I think you have a problem with logic. You hate Loria because of the fire sale? What about Wayne and John Henry? They did the same thing. AND they DID NOT get us a stadium. But I guess you have a perfectly legitimate reason as to why you hate the guy who achieved OUR lifelong dream.
