We got Ayala!

The Marlins and right-hander Luis Ayala agreed to terms on a one-year contract today, not long after the Minnesota Twins released him.

Ayala, 31, will report to Triple-A New Orleans for a couple of outings since he last pitched on June 20. The Marlins will purchase his contract probably sometime toward the backend of next week's swing through San Francisco and Arizona.

In Ayala, who the Twins designated for assignment on June 22, the Marlins get an experienced late-inning reliever who can boast 367 career appearances and 382 2/3 innings, all but 32 1/3 of which he's spent in the National League East.

"We had a handful of teams that were interested," said Joe Longo, Ayala's agent. "He knows [General Manager] Michael Hill and he's been talking to [Alfredo] Amezaga and [Jorge] Cantu. Between the three of them and Luis talking, he thinks there's a good opportunity there in a young bullpen and he knows the division well. He's comfortable there."

A native of Los Mochis, Mex., Ayala was teammates with both Amezaga and Cantu in the World Baseball Classic.

Let's see what he can do in NOLA before we anoint the guy the second coming...Ayala was treated with total disdain among Twins fans. They couldn't wave goodbye to him fast enough. They are pretty astute fans. By the time he left, everyone, the team, the manager, the fans were happy to see him go.

But he's a Marlins now, he's my guy.

my recollection of him with the nats is I was always glad to see him come in to face us. Oh, well, at least he has friends on the team. As a set up guy, at least until Matt comes back, concerns me.

that was quick. hopefully he puts up better numbers in the NL because he sucked for the twins. like i've said before, we don't need an overpriced closer. nunez has done a good job since lindstrom went down. we just need a couple reliable arms to get us to the 9th.

Hopefully he doesn't suck like he did with the Mets and twins.

I'm praying that he gets back to he Expos/Nationals form so he could be a good asset in the pen.

Ayala is a good signing... I got to see him pitch a lot up here in Washington a few years back he was pretty good but then he went down hill... Anyway, I like the move...

I would imagine you would be treated with disdain by your fans if you demanded to be traded because you weren't pitching in the "right" situations. He might be coming in with the expectation to inherit the eighth inning role but nothing should be handed to him until he has some solid outings. He's been much better in his career against right handers so I could see him eventually being used in a committee role with Meyer in the 7th inning. Lefties have absolutely torn him up this year.

"He wanted an eighth-inning role. That's why he signed over here," Gardenhire said. "But he wasn't pitching well enough to be an eighth-inning guy. So there you have it. His thoughts were that if we gave him the ball in that eighth inning, he would be able to do the job more. My thoughts are, if you are not getting them out, you are not going to pitch in the eighth inning. We are trying to win."

"I'm talking about winning this year and he's talking about if he doesn't get in the right situations here, he's worried about his contract for next year," Gardenhire said. "You lose me right there. I don't deal with that. We're talking about winning now. So we were talking about different things. That's why he's out the door and another guy is in here to pitch. It's not that [Ayala] is a bad guy. His theories are a little different than ours."

Can't say I blame the fans for wanting to be rid of him.

Scott Proctor is out for the season. This was announced a month ago.

That is a dis-heartening article... A player just worried about a future contract. Ayala, shape up pal and pitch to your capabilities and IF you are lucky to join the Marlins big club pitch well.

This is excellent news. Ayala isn't gonna be the savior of the bullpen, but he gives us another guy that has experience pitching in the late innings. Meyer and Nunez would crumble under the strain otherwise. Leroux and Wood are too inexperienced and Hopper is a long reliever. Pinto has already pitched more close and late ball than anyone would every want and Sanches is just a minor league journeyman who has done nice things but doesn't have setup man stuff. Ayala doesn't have to be the man, he will help us just by giving us options. It'll be great to have him up and Calero back.

The really great news is that we didn't have to give up anything to get him. I think that the FO still swings a trade for a closer candidate, but we are gonna need all the help we can get down the stretch.

Agreed. He isn't a savior but if returns to form resembling his pre-2008 self, he's certainly a much better bullpen option than Lindstrom, Pinto, Wood, or Leroux would be.

I'm still hoping Lindstrom can turn things around. He never had the gas this year that he has in previous years. He's certainly not a guy to be trusted for a setup role and, like Anibal Sanchez, I think we need to think of any contributions we're gonna get from him as a gift. But it would still be nice if he does come back later and actually has that confidence and the arm that made him our closer in the first place.
