Wes Helms Signs 2 Year Deal

Featured Replies

I like it.

Absolutely horrible and horrific deal.

We were going to have to give him a $750,000 buyout. For not much more in 2009, we have him on the roster now.

Is this confirmed. No buyout, and deal replaces it? As I said earlier in the thread. This can be stomached for $1.15 for 2 years when you eliminate the buyout as a fixed cost for the deal.

I think the Marlins would be bettter off looking elsewhere. Helms doesn't bring much to the table right now, especially against right handed pitchers.

I'll take him just for the PH and RISP splits Rab posted.

Like Lou said, that's mostly against LHP. BR is acting up right now so I can't split that into vs LHP and RHP, but I still say he is worth keeping.

Good move overall, it provides protection at the corners and a spot filler if any of the corner guys goes down with injury.

and for whatever is worth I still don't want to lose Jacobs. It's nice to have a left handed power hitter in the lineup.

Not really a fan of this move.

I don't see the "need" for Wes Helms.

He's very above average at his job. Not sure why not to keep that.

Yes...Dallas McPherson will be nice next year, considering he's a left handed power bat who can actually play a lick of defense...and will come at a much cheaper price, than Mike "swing for the fences at all times and provide nothing else" Jacobs.

I dont mind the fact we have signed Helms on for 2 more.

However, over the past 3 or 4 years guys like Helms, Gonzalez and Boone have been brought in to provide a "veteran prescence" among the team due to the sheer volume of rookie/young players. Do you think we really need to continue bringing in guys for this role, cos surely guys like Hanley and Cantu have picked up a good idea of how to adopt a sort of leadership/veteran prescence on the team and then they could maybe now be trusted to assist the next batch of youngsters.

He's very replaceable, for what he does.

Not exactly the type of guy I'd expect signed to a multi-year deal.

Plus...with a trio of Cantu, McPherson, & Sanchez...what's the point of a 4th corner infielder (signed to a multi-year deal...when the team still has plenty of higher priorities to get a deal with)?

*Unless if we're trading one of Cantu, McPherson, or Sanchez.*

You can always leave G. Sanchez in AAA, and go with Cantu at 1B, McPherson/Helms at 3B, and then if McPherson doesn't work out, call up Gaby to start at 1B and shift Cantu to 3B. It really doesn't change the situation that much from a 1B/3B perspective.

But it tells me we will be spending money on our bench players, where we aren't going to be able to afford arbitration to probably Uggla. This is writing on the wall that he goes. Not necessarily a bad thing, but I hope they get a balls awesome package from someone like StL, Clev, or SF to make it worth it.
