November 5, 200818 yr Russel would be a great ition...but if where the fish i would trade olsen and a prospect or 2
November 5, 200818 yr That trade helps the Dodgers a lot more than it helps us. Right now we would only trade Olsen for a catcher who is not near arbitration eligible. Russell Martin is ready for a big pay day. This is never going to happen. Our main targets are Salty and Ramirez from Texas. I believe that is who the marlins are mainly negotiating with right now, and a deal will get done soon.
November 5, 200818 yr The Rangers won't want another major piece. straight up, this is would be a pretty ideal trade for us. maybe the rangers too. Its been talked about long enough without it happening that it makes me think there must be a catching point (get it?)
November 5, 200818 yr also, did you know his full given name is Maximiliano? thats pretty awesome. That is awesome. I can just can hear Rich, Tommy, and Craig attempting to say it. Max is major-league ready, I agree. If Olsen for Max straight up isn't enough, DLC, Kensing, and Jesus Delgado are out of options - maybe one of them could be included, since we may very well lose at least one through waivers at some point anyway. The idea of trading for both Laird and Max is silly. Not just because Max is ML-ready, but he will be much cheaper than Laird, and most reports have said the Marlins are not interested in Laird. http://www.sun-sentinel.com/sports/basebal...0,4347704.story
November 5, 200818 yr Martin would be such a bad addition. It would mess up our longterm payroll situation, and we would be trading multiple properties and (presumably) not receive any major pitching back. Catcher is a need, but not to go big, just to get a young partner to match with Baker. Jacobs for Nunez Olsen and friends for Max Gregg for a SP prospect sign minor league FA middle infielders, starting pitchers, and relief pitchers. Try and win arbitration versus everyone else That's basically the offseason.

I have to agree, although I'm not sure we'll sign too many middle IF, only because Helms is under contract, Amezaga will stay, and Andino and Dallas are both out of options. Or, if we sign them, they'll have a really hard time getting on the 25-man. If the Max trade goes through, by the way, you can shave another $1 mil off of your latest payroll projection, Lou, because I believe you had slotted $1.5 million for a vet FA catcher.
November 5, 200818 yr No. I wouldn't even give up Uggla alone to get Martin. Uggla is a top 3 MLB 2B and Martin isn't even top 5 among catchers. The only reason to go after Martin would have to be offense, but even then, Baker was better at the plate in his limited time this season (Baker's 839 OPS vs Martin's 781). Not saying I'd do this deal, but I'd put Martin in the top catchers in baseball. Mostly though because of the lack of quality catchers right now. Who are the five better? If you judge offensive catchers by their 2008 OPS, among those with 400 or more plate appearances you have: #1 Brian McCann - 896 #2 Chris Ianetta - 895 #3 Geovany Soto - 868 #4 Kelly Shoppach - 865 #5 Joe Mauer - 864 #6 Ryan Doumit - 858 #7 Chris Snyder - 800 #8 Russel Martin - 781 If you expand this comparison to include Catchers with only 200 or more plate appearances you also get: Mike Napoli - 960 and of course John Baker - 839
