Since there is a need for a fourth outfielder and one that will fit from a money standpoint, for your consideration I present Felix Pie.

I posted these links so people are talking about the same stuff. Personally I don't know the answer. This happened by accident today. Hadn't really thought about it. You look at the numbers and the hype and his youth and how BA saw him, and then those minorleaguesplits and no doubt others will come to a different conclusion, but for myself, as a fourth outfielder, we could do worse than see if we can fix him because at least defensively he's a step up from anyone we have so I've gone from him barely on my radar screen to at the very least fascinated and more than a bit interested.

No one disputes that defensively he has the tools to play any outfield position. Strong, accurate arm. Speed, good routes. Defensively he's better than two of the guys penciled in to start in 2009.

Felix Pie is out of options. Logan Kensing is out of options as are two other Marlins relievers. The Cubs are looking for relief help. (Robert Andino is out of options but it's too much of a stretch to think he's the answer to the Cubs infield needs. They don't roll that way).

Did I mention Felix Pie is NOT arbitration eligible?

The Cubs are out of money. Well not exactly but with the Tribune Company is in bankruptcy and ownership in flux. Money IS an issue. Finding reliever(s) who are near the bottom of their paygrade is not a bad thing in 2009 for the Cubs.

If the stories are true, as part of the now dead Peavy to the Cubs deal, the going price for Pie to the Orioles was Garrett Olsen...starting pitcher with a 6.50+ ERA and a 1.73 whip. Other winter 2008 Pie trade rumors are equally uninspiring from a cost perspective.

The Cubs just signed Joey Gathright to impersonate Felix Pie. How much Pie do you really need if you're the Cubs?

Is Jim Presley the guy who finally fixes him? I think it all comes down to that, yes or no?

He's lefty, he has shown he can handle righty pitching. Lefties make him look embarrassingly silly. Ignore his major league numbers, two years of small sample sizes. If you think he's fixable he's $ cheap enough to give Presley the spring to spin his magic. He's young enough that even if it doesn't work there will be another team who thinks they can find the key. The financial risk is very small.

He's only 23, that should make some people here happy. The Cubs couldn't have handled the guy more badly. He's batting over .300/350 in the DWL, who knows?

I don't, but I thought it was worth discussing.

Pie is the exact same kind of player as Podsednick. I'd be fine with either, not crazy happy, but basically the best we can do at this time

Pie is nothing like Podsednik. Pie has more HR in 6 professional seasons than Posednik has in 15, and Pie is 23 years old. So much more power potential it's not even funny, and Pie can play defense something Pod cannot do. Pie is a good prospect and can turn into a plus regular. Podsednik is whatever. uh. What a joke

He's fine 03 if the price is right. Lot's of guys out there worth taking flyers on who are out of options.

If you want to talk out of options think the Rays. Niemann and Talbot are out of options, and they have 12 other pitchers already. They'd look great in our bullpen, could be our "6th" starter for one someone undoubtedly go down, and offer enough long term potential to stick somewhere. Dallas could probably be a good sometimes DH for them. They still need two bats to fill out their roster.

LOL Felix Pie a very good prospect, a poor man's Jeremy Hermida imo

For what it's worth...I wouldn't mind a prospect like Pie here, either. It's just the name is funny. :D

in 177 AB's in 07 he batted .215, in 08 he batted .241 in 83 AB's. Our team needs power from our outfielders currently, something that we are kinda lacking in, how would getting Pie help us in any way?

Gabe Kapler batted over .300 last year in 229 AB's, an OPS near 850. Unlike Pie, Kapler actually contributed for his team last year. If we are going to get a guy to be our 4th outfielder and a reliable one, I would rather have a Kapler, or a player like Posednick who proved himself in 2006 with the White Sox

I'm sure somebody would pay more, someone who's looking for longterm help at CF (SD, HOU, maybe MIL, SF, list goes on). Like I said in the other Pie thread, a lot of his value comes from playing good CF defense. He'd make an outstanding 4th OFer but that also means he'd make a good starter.

The Rays are gonna have to get creative to keep these guys and I'd definitely like to get them if we could. Especially Niemann, he's not gonna be an ace but he seems to have the makeup of a good pitcher. He saw his debut last year and he seemed to have the kind of poise that lends itself to success.

LOL Felix Pie a very good prospect, a poor man's Jeremy Hermida imo

Nothing like Hermida developmentally.

You really need to reassess what you think you know about baseball.

reassess? All I see in his minor league stats are 1 good year and the rest he struck out a sh*tload. So far he hasn't proved anything in the minors, I would much rather sign another veteran to fill the void Luis Gonzalez left than sign an underperforming 3rd year player who has little to no future with this franchise

Oh I would to, but you realize this is the Marlins though and we aren't going to give Mark Kotsay $3 million. And Pie could very well have a future with any team in the league if he starts hitting a little bit. He still has a lot of potential. He's better than all our minor league outfielders in AA or above except for Maybin. If we were to get him, he'd be great as the 4th outfielder with future potential and worth the risk. But like NNY said, some outfield starved team would certainly bid more.

he wouldn't have a future with this team. We have Stanton ready in a few years, we have Maybin here for long term, and we are hoping that Hermida pans out, but if he doesn't we still have Cody Ross maybe or we can rely on getting a RFer via trade or free agency. Why would we still a guy with a weak arm like Pie in RF? He's a good fielder, but he doesn't have a RFers arm.

Also, John Raynor/Scott Cousins anyone? I would much rather give those two a chance next year as our fourth outfielder than have to sign a guy in free agency like Pie that adds no veteran leadership to this team.

I wouldn't say Pie has a rocket arm, but I have seen him make some very fine plays with his arm. I've certainly seen him do more things with his arm than I have ever seen Hermida, and in much less time.

Hermida has the potential to be one of the premier Right Fielders, he just needs to stop being such a lazy mother f*cker and move his a** once in a while

Felix Pie is projected to have 5 tool potential. You just don't automatically pass up players like that. Pie, like Hermida, is the type of player you keep & hope that they can fulfill their potential, b/c they have stud in the making tools.

The Cubs have given this guy many chances. He hasn't responded well at all to the major leagues. I dunno...I mean the Cubs need a center fielder or right fielder at this time, and I have a hard time believing we know something about Pie that they don't.

Where in the world does this "weak arm" thing come from? Mars? We're not talking about Juan Pierre here. I don't usually ask people to source stuff, I take them at their word but I'd really like to see this from a legitimate source.

And he's not a free agent, he barely has any MLB time, I think it's like .8 years. He's out of minor league options, that's what make him available.

woops, read the link wrong, states he has a "an accurate cannon of an arm"

He has been compared to Vladmir Guererro and Carl Crawford. All I am reading here is that he has a ton of "potential". His stats don't show any of it. Sounds like another Hermida, failed experiment

Stand up answer. :thumbup

And I might add I brought him up in the context of a fourth outfielder because of his defense, not as a replacement for either of the projected corner guys. He does also provide some backup in center as well. It is after all his primary position.

Kinda hard to call players in the 23-25 age range, "failed experiments."

for the Cubs sake, yeah he was a failed experiment. Why else would they have let him go?
