Obama's First Broken Promise

No. 234: Allow five days of public comment before signing bills

To reduce bills rushed through Congress and to the president before the public has the opportunity to review them, Obama "will not sign any non-emergency bill without giving the American public an opportunity to review and comment on the White House website for five days."

that website is pretty cool. It tracks all "510" promises he made on the campaign trail. I think he has kept 9 so far and broken 1, and then has like 18 in the works or something. The Politifact.org site is really cool. they also look at just comments made by numerous people and how truthful or untruthful those are.

Someone needs to call him out publicly so that he actually fulfills his promise. We gotta hold him accountable.

Yes, although this is really minor compared to other promises.

Not if the goal is more transparency and a more populace orientated means of getting things done.

Already this administration is 1000x more transparent than the last, and seems to be more transparent than Clinton.

Nobody's perfect, so there are going to be slip ups along the way. So far things are going well.

Obama has been a disappointment thus far. He has been a typical liberal hack thus far and has to resorted to the politics of fear and intimidation in lieu of the politics of hope and change .

Obama has been so predictable I laugh myself sometimes.

I would say the same thing, except I would substitute 'Obama' for your name... :thumbup

It is WAY WAY too early to make a sound judgment on a presidency that has been going on for less than a month.

I am not going to say so far that Obama has been anywhere near perfect, but to say that he has been less than average is wrong. He does need to let go of this idea of bipartisanship now, because it's already been shown that the Republicans are not interested in doing anything beyond obstructing his legislation, without even offering an alternative plan besides 'TAX CUTS, MUST HAVE MORE TAX CUTS!!!!!'. The GOP has already written their playbook for 2009-2010, and it basically says:

-Oppose the stimulus package so that if it fails, we can say 'We told you so!'

-Keep the economy down until the midterm elections, in hopes that the American people don't notice our obstructionism

-Make a black man our token Chairman, even though he has never won a major office in his life, and he has committed some pretty heinous violations of voting laws, but hasn't been caught yet.

I don't have a problem if the GOP has an ACTUAL plan to fix the economy, but when they have no other position except to put as many tax cuts into the bill as possible (which may make things worse), it's hard to take them seriously.

Penguino, we haven't seen any results yet, so how about we wait long enough to see how his policies turn out before we declare him a failed president.

Nah, start digging the grave...

After all we did do that with Bush.

Listen I understand that those among you who don't understand why these massive spending projects are doomed to failure need to "wait and see" to make a judgement, but even then, I don't understand how you can characterize positively an administration which can't seem to appoint anyone who actually files and pays their taxes on time. I'm shocked that they've kept the biggest embarassment of them all by keeping Geithner in power, and I don't think that embarassment will go away. Even President Obama acknowledged the double standard on display, although he's done nothing about it.

And it would be one thing if these people were tax protesters with well-developed principled arguments against the legality of the income tax, but that isn't the case. Many of them like Daschle, advocate increasing the income tax and argue that more people need to pay "their fair share", and suggest that it is more than they are now paying.

Agree completely but I still feel Obama's leadership thus far can be criticized on the grounds of him fear-mongering to rush through a controversial bill. His failure to receive support of the other party (Republicans) is actually divisive. The Republicans are now becoming (relatively) united and partisan in order to band together against Obama. While you or I might find this growing partisanship, it goes against everything Obama claimed to be when campaigning.

Far be it from me to look a gift horse in the mouth though. Hopefully the President & his people in congress can keep screwing things up so that the "oh so partisan" Republicans pick up just the right number of seats in Congress to create gridlock and pass nothing. That would be a dream come true.
