February 2, 200917 yr http://blogs.nypost.com/sports/st/archives...reach_term.html The MetsNew York Mets have reached agreement with Oliver PerezOliver Perez on a three-year, $36 million contract that will be finalized when the left-hander passes a physical, the Post has learned. The Mets now know the likely composition of their rotation with Perez joining Johan SantanaJohan Santana , Mike PelfreyMike Pelfrey , John MaineJohn Maine , and either Tim Redding or Freddy Garcia, who is trying to work his way back from injury. This all but assures that Pedro MartinezPedro Martinez will not be returning to the team. The Mets had been haggling for a while with Perez's representative, Scott Boras. But in the end, Perez received neither a fourth year on the contract nor even an option year for a fourth year. When the offseason began, Met officials debated between spending their big starting pitching dollars on either the dependability of Derek Lowe or on retaining Perez. Those who favored Perez -- and there were many within the organization -- liked that he was still just 27, has not been bothered by pitching in New York and that if he ever fully harnesses his stuff he has top-of-the-rotation ability. Lowe ultimately signed with the Braves for four years at $60 million, which was way beyond what the Mets were willing to do for a starter. That pushed them back to Perez, and now the Mets will hope that the lack of focus or lack of maturity or whatever it is exactly that detours Perez from consistent excellence will melt away. Perez went 10-7 last year for the Mets in 34 starts with a 4.22 ERA. He allowed just 167 hits in 194 innings, but walked 105, the most in the majors. Perez joins Francisco Rodriguez and J.J. Putz as the Mets' major additions of the offseason. And it is probable now that the Mets are done with significant acquisitions, even as there are plenty of calls for them still to add a run-producing bat, possibly that of Manny Ramirez.
February 2, 200917 yr Very inconsistent, but is really good when he wants to be. Not nearly worth 12 a year though. Let the Mets continue to overpay these guys
February 2, 200917 yr Perez always does well vs us. Not at all. That actually goes on point to what Puma said. Last year he had an ERA of 2.23 against us, but in 05, 06, and 07, he had ERAs of 6.00, 6.10, and 4.84 respectively.
February 2, 200917 yr 12 is a lot for perez. They could of picked up some other players instead I think. Not a bad signing thoough.
February 2, 200917 yr Author I think it is great. The Mutts committing 12 million for Perez, overpaying again, and quite possibly eliminating the chance of Manny signing there. As long as they keep Manny far far away from the Mutts organization, I'm good. :arms

February 2, 200917 yr I wouldn't say 12 mill for Oliver Perez is "overpaying" in this day and age. He's a power left-handed pitcher, who, while being inconsistent, has shown flashes of dominance, and still has some upside. By comparison, A.J. Burnett got over 16 mill a year for 5 years, and he's 5 years older than Oliver Perez. So I don't think it's a terrible deal.
February 3, 200917 yr Perez always does well vs us. Not at all. That actually goes on point to what Puma said. Last year he had an ERA of 2.23 against us, but in 05, 06, and 07, he had ERAs of 6.00, 6.10, and 4.84 respectively. I was pretty much just goin on last year where he seemd to do well vs us.
February 3, 200917 yr Hoping to see the battle of the Hard throwing lefties Perez vs Andrew Miller. Not a great signing but the Mets really need another pitcher for the rotation. As previously stated they can waste all the money they want as long as the don't get even close to signing Manny.
February 3, 200917 yr Was he seriously ever gonna sign for someone other than the Mets? It was guaranteed they would eventually offer him a deal he liked
February 3, 200917 yr could of put that 12 million a year towards manny. But they didnt and thats all that matters.

February 4, 200917 yr Perez always does well vs us. Not at all. That actually goes on point to what Puma said. February 4, 200917 yr could of put that 12 million a year towards manny. Manny would be a luxury, we have a decent OF -- we needed a starter, badly. 12 Mil is a little pricey but Perez is decent and the length of the deal is right. As for Manny, don't need and don't want him. I'd like to to see them make a run at Orlando Hudson but that likely won't happen. So this is essentially last year's team with hopefully a full season of the Delgado, Murphy in left, Church healthy, and a high powered back of the pen (the rest of it still BLOWS). 90 wins is where I see this team ending up, not good enough IMO.
February 8, 200917 yr Mets were never going after Manny because Jeff Coupon is BROKE. The best right hand hitting OFer in baseball is on the market and you don't go after him when all you are giving up is money? He's BROKE.

Everyone "wants" him. That's just bulls***, there.
