Odd Man Out

Featured Replies

Whenever Proctor does come back in mid May, who do you guys think will be the odd man out? Maybe Carroll, but his defense is outstanding and with what he did in ST, he deserves a roster spot. Maybe Kensing will get the boot to AAA if he struggles but we don't know yet since we've only seen him twice. Maybe Calero will get the boot to AAA if he implodes but for what I've seen from him, I don't see it happening to him. Penn will definitely stay as long relief. So who do you guys think will be going to AAA?

Pinto or Kensing

I know Kensing is out of options. Don't know about Pinto.

the thing is if we kick out Pinto to AAA, then will this team survive with one lefty specialist?

Erick is right, assuming individual performances stay remain somewhat similar to what they are now.

Pinto is far from a lefty specialists. Take a look at his splits.

A lefty specialist is overrated. (don't get me wrong...I've wanted Will Ohman since last year...I think everyone here knows that).

Take Leo Nunez for example...his changeup is just as effective, if not more effective, to a lefty than anything Meyer or Pinto have.

Pinto isn't a lefty specialist, anyways.

Hopefully Kensing can perform reasonably so we can get a little something in return in a trade.

.......although, if he sucks, he can probably clear waivers

What are the odds he clears waivers, though, seriously, assuming an average performance?

Pretty sure an average reliever who has shown the capability to K a batter per inning won't clear waivers. I'm sure the Braves, for example, would want him the second he's let go.

You see, when Pinto is on fire, he can definitely throw. At least for now, Meyer is holding his own as a lefty specialist. Maybe we can survive with only one lefty in our pen. But Pinto, or Kensing will be the odd men out, which either one is chosen. Personally, I LOVE Kensing cause he has great stuff but needs to "pitch" better. I would hate to see him go since he's out of options.

No way Pinto's going anywhere.

"No way," eh?

Correct.

ZERO chance.

I will bet you anything you like.

Cross that bridge when you get there

Proctor's arm could fall off at any moment

Yeah, anything can happen.

I'm still a little worried about Lindstrom too. His velocity still isn't there. He threw a couple balls at 96 today, but he was mostly 92-95. That's a good 5-8 mph less of what it normally is.

I'm not sure if he's doing that b/c of arm fatigue, or if he's just trying to throw more strikes.

No way Pinto's going anywhere.

May I ask why? (you must like this...I'm asking for your opinion :o )

We currently have ZERO lefty specialists. Pinto is statistically better against right handed hitters (look it up) and Meyer is a converted starter who also isn't dominant against left handed hitters.

I don't know who will be sent down.

Well, considering he came into spring training as one of four guaranteed relievers to make this team, I don't see that changing a month into the season.

That's just me.

Yeah, but the season started already, and aside from Pinto and Kensing, everyone seems to have a role, all of the sudden, in the pen.

Penn is being used in long/middle relief

Meyer is being used as the LOOGY.

Calero is the primary guy for the 7th inning

Nunez for setup

Lindstrom, closer

That leaves Pinto and Kensing. I know, for a fact, that Kensing is out of options b/c that was discussed this offseason. Pinto, I am not sure. But if Pinto has options, I don't see why he wouldn't be the "odd man out."

Pinto and Kensing are the 2 guys being used in mop-up duty. Knowing for a fact that Kensing is out of options...if Pinto is not out of options, I don't see why he wouldn't be the "odd man out."

First, I'm pretty positive that he's out of options.

Change your mind yet?

If not, who's been the one going down to the minors when they struggle, Pinto or Kensing?

Who's had more major league success, Pinto or Kensing?

Fredi may not have the confidence in Pinto right now that he had most of last year, because the end of '08 is still fresh in his mind... But if Pinto gets it together again to start this season (which last night is a good sign) we may have enough reliable guys in the pen to keep him strong all season, unlike last year. Pinto has shown he can be dominant when he isn't overworked. Logan has never shown this.

I think it is funny (but also awesome) that less than a week ago we were seriously lamenting the 'pen, and now we don't want to part with any of them. I would be surprised to see Pinto sent down (waived?)... but I also agree with Erick's assessment of the 'roles' he listed. Fredi seems to agree as well. It would be a hell of a turnaround if Pinto is the odd man out. IMO, it would say a lot about our FO's faith in these new young arms we have brought in.

Yea, I think Kensing would have to get my vote as "odd man out"

"Pretty positive" doesn't sound 100% certain. I'll wait till Nny or Lou come in for the actual fact.

Regardless, I don't see the dominance you see in Pinto.

The first half last year he posted a 2.96 ERA with a 1.39 WHIP. That's not dominance, it's just luck. He has control issues just like Kensing, is prone to giving up the long ball just like Kensing, and K's about a better per inning...just like Kensing.

There's nothing dominant about Pinto and his career 1.41 WHIP. Maybe if he threw strikes on a consistent basis...hasn't happened yet.

I'm not exactly thrilled to have this pen. Mainly b/c I don't like the left-handed options...

But I'm just showing my observations of what it seems Fredi seems to have confidence in, right now. Observations :shifty
