Maybe Brett Favre will be making his 270th consecutive NFL regular-season start after all.

ESPN is reporting that Favre, who has been granted his release by the New York Jets, will meet with Minnesota Vikings coach Brad Childress later this week at an "undisclosed location." From there, they will presumably decide if Favre will scuttle his second retirement and play a 19th NFL season with the Vikings.

Favre, who was phased out of Green Bay last offseason after his first retirement, wanted to play for Minnesota in 2008 when he decided to return for an 18th season last summer. The Packers traded him to the Jets instead to avoid having the NFL's all-time leader in passing yards and TD passes plague them in the NFC North.

Favre led the Jets to an 8-3 record before a torn biceps tendon in his throwing arm contributed to a late-season skid. New York lost four of its final five games and fell short of the playoffs. Favre re-retired on Feb. 11, and the Jets moved on by drafting USC QB Mark Sanchez in last month's draft.

Favre has not been working out and has not had surgery on his arm, preferring to let it heal on its own, according to the ESPN story.

The Vikings won the NFC North in 2008, largely thanks to NFL rushing champ Adrian Peterson and a stout defense. They acquired QB Sage Rosenfels from the Texans in the offseason to compete with inconsistent incumbent starting QB Tarvaris Jackson.

Favre told ESPN NFL analyst and former quarterback Trent Dilfer earlier this week that he would not be coming back in 2009.

Brett Favre has become like that little bug that crawls up your arm, and every time you try and flick it off, it continues to find a way back on your arm. He just won't go away as much as we want him to go.

I just wanna say this. People shouldn't bash Bret Favre for wanting to come back to the NFL. He loves the game and it's what he is. But this time, he didn't reach out and say he wants to come back. The Vikings reached out to him. You can't blame him for thinking about another come back.

It kinda sucks, however, the way he waits so long to make the decision. It's a bit selfish, imo.

The whole "waaaaahhh, waaaahhh, I'm retiring" crap which led to "oh I'm coming back." He's doing the same thing again. Meeting up with the Vikings after he reportedly sent a text to Trent Dilfer saying "NO" when asked if he was thinking of coming back.

If you ask me, he's the biggest attention whore in all of sports.

It's also gotten to the point where he's annoying b/c every completion he makes, you hear an announcer saying "only Brett Favre can make that pass" when in reality the pass wasn't difficult. Or if not we get to hear about his love for the game, as if there aren't other players on the field who love the game the same way.

It's also sad because he's only ruining his legacy with every single one of these comebacks.

But this is different from last year. Last year he wanted to come back. He reached out to the Packers. This year it's the other way around. The Vikings reached out to him. That isn't his fault. You can't blame him for meeting up with them after they showed that they wanted him.

You also can't blame Bret Favre for what they announcers are saying. He doesn't tell them to say all that stuff. It's just them hopping on his d!ck. It has nothing to do with him and coming back from retiremant.

And he is NOT ruining his legacy. Look at MJ. He came back twice, and everyone still thinks he's the greatest NBA player of all time. Bret Favre will still go down as one of the greatest QBs of all time.

Difference was that MJ was still great when he retired, both times. Farve is a shell.

Citing sources close to free agent Brett Favre, the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports that Favre signing with Minnesota is far from a done deal due to a "significant tear" in his right biceps tendon.

The Journal Sentinel calls the health of Favre's throwing arm "likely...the determining factor." Favre's injury has reportedly improved little since last year. His options are playing hurt -- which Favre did ineffectively in 2008 -- or having arthroscopic surgery that would sideline him until training camp. The Vikings play just one cold-weather game in 2009, which helps, but Favre might balk if they tell him to fix the injury. He's never been a fan of surgery.

And you think he doesn't want to come back this year? I'll guarantee you that he's in an NFL uniform on opening week. When you say to someone that you're not going to come back, and then do the exact opposite year after year, it doesn't matter who's contacting who, it gets annoying.

I do blame him for meeting with the Vikings. If he really didn't want to come back, he would have simply told them "no", and went on with his life. The Vikings didn't force him to talk with them.

Also, yes, MJ came back, but this is a completely different situation. He didn't talk with one of his former teams' biggest rivals.

I know he wants to come back this year. But he didn't go to the Vikings and ask them to sign him. They came to him. You can't blame him for having some interest. Especially on that team with AP.

And i know MJ was still great when he came back. But I'm not arguing about skill. MJ left and came back as he pleased so it shouldn't matter if Favre does. It is annoying, but he has the right.

Again, yes, I do blame him for having insterest. He already said that he definitely would not be playing in the NFL this upcoming year, and then changed his mind for the millionth time.

It's only the second time. And he is only talking with them. He's not making a big deal out of it like he did last year.

He officially has only retired two times, but he was the one who said before the 2006 season that it would be his last year, yet came back, and did the same thing again before the 2007 season. Then he retired before the 2008 season, came back, and retired again this year...and will probably come back yet again.

He didn't officialy retire in 2006, so it doesn't matter if he came back or not.

In 2007, he did come back, but he has the right. He didn't feel he was done with football.

In 2008, he retired, and it looks like he'll stay retired.

I wasn't arguing whether or not he has the right to come back, of course he does. I'm just saying that it's getting old.

Favre informs Vikings that he plans to retire.

And I thought I could maybe go a whole offseason without hearing about Brett Favre.

I'll believe it when the season starts.

He really screwed them over.
