May 11, 200917 yr Whilst this might display my perhaps forgivable Marlins ignorance (living in a land that has ZERO baseball coverage), I was stunned whilst flicking through my ebay-acquired copy of the 1997 World Series programme that: Jerry Manuel was on our staff. Charlie Manuel was on the Indians staff. Mark Wiley was the Indians pitching coach. Heck, I didn't even know Drugmonkey Ramirez was on the Indians' roster. Damn! Just wondering, any other Marlin-come-latelys who've learnt stuff about the Fish that has bedazzled them?
May 11, 200917 yr I know what you mean. A lot of baseball things prior to 2006 are unknown to me, although I did know Manny was with Cleveland. One of the things I find strange is that Soriano used to play for the Yankees. For some reason I just cant picture him playing for them even though I know that he did.
May 11, 200917 yr Author I know what you mean. A lot of baseball things prior to 2006 are unknown to me, although I did know Manny was with Cleveland. One of the things I find strange is that Soriano used to play for the Yankees. For some reason I just cant picture him playing for them even though I know that he did. Funnily enough, the first time I came across the Marlins was in a copy of USA Today I got free whilst staying in Disneyworld in Summer '07. There was a small news report saying how their pitcher Byung-Hyun Kim was back after being injured. For some reason, as he had such an "exotic" (i.e. as I was still labouring under the common Brit-misapprehension that only Americans played baseball) name, I assumed that he was a bit of a superstar. I soon learnt the truth!
May 11, 200917 yr Though I have followed the Marlins since 1993, I really was only focused on them and my extended baseball knowledge wasn't that great. However, in the past 10 years or so, I have taken a more general interest in baseball. So I am still somewhat surprised about how many members of the Indians of '97 are now more "known" to me than back then. On a related note, when I went to the Nats/Marlins game this year, on the way back on the Metro, someone approached me to complain about the Indians losing the '97 series. I said don't blame me, blame Jose Mesa. He said he does that too!
May 11, 200917 yr Due to the high turnover of Marlins players, there are a looooot of ex-Marlins doing things elsewhere in the bigs. I find that looking over old rosters/box scores I often see a guy that is now playing elsewhere but I hadn't realized used to be a fish.
May 12, 200917 yr That 1997 Indians team had so many names. Go look at it, you won't believe the guys they had off their bench.

I'm good friends with the Indians back-up catcher from that year (look him up) and I still give him crap about # 1 never getting to play in that World Series and # 2 about not being able to get me tickets and # 3 for having one of the best seats for watching the Marlins win it all and asking him if he still gets goosebumps when he thinks about. :thumbup

Oh man I loved Charles Johnson! I have tons of his rookie cards, and sadly they are worthless now heh... But it sucks how he had to stop playing because of his bad knees, and sadly his best year with the bat wasn't in a Marlins uniform. He was good in 97 tho... I still remember watching him the day he came up talking to Benito Santiago in the dug out the guys on TV Jay Randolph & Gary Carter talking about how quickly up the system CJ had gone, and how he would be with us for many many years! heh that didnt last long. I wonder what CJ is doing these days...
May 12, 200917 yr who would of thought 12 years later there would be 4 guys playing on the mets from the world series team
