General Cameron Maybin Discussion

Maybin leaves with back ailment

Zephyrs outfielder Cameron Maybin left the game in the fourth inning with a strained back.

Strained groin. Down 7, he was hustling out a groundball, when he got injur ed.

If anyone is a "Golden Boy" on this team, it's Bonifacio. You'd have to be completely blind not to notice the affection the FO has had for him from the very start. In his case, it's based on nothing. At least with the other proclaimed golden boys, there's basis for favor.

BGB = Board Golden Boy You would have to be completely blind not to see the potential and the improvement while the BGBs have displayed nothing. And yes the FO is showing some trust in him. And it has been paying off. Keep watching. And learning.

Future HOFer? Sincerely doubt that. Future face of this franchise? Ditto. But very good player that fills a role for a few more years on this team? Definetly. Bank on it.

Potenitial and improvement? Not to continue this trend, but you would have to be completely blind not to notice the amount of times that his abysmal numbers have been brought up on the board since the first week of the season. In what way has the FO trust in him been paying off? He's bloomed nicely into one of the worst leadoff hitters in baseball. Getting a couple hits here and there doesn't cancel out the whole picture.

As for the BGBs, I have two words: track records. That's a whole lot more than one can say for Bonifacio. It gets to point where it seems as if people defend Bonifacio solely because others aren't optimisitic about him.

There is no doubt somebody is completely blind. Keep "watching."

And Yet people are "fence sitters" on Hermida. One of 3 players we have that are actually batting good.

I'm a fence sitter on Hermida because I can see things going either way with him. And because of the way things have transpired for him over the last year.

Its amazing how Bonifacio gets a hit or two and people act like the last 20+ games never happened, a figment of our imagination if you will. A "Haha, Bonifacio got a hit! Makes that 20 game stretch of over 120 ABs where he was completely worthless irrelevant" mentality.

The dude was projected by everyone to be a utility man at best for a reason\. He has about as low a ceiling as a hitter can possibly have with his comedic lack of plate discipline and horrendous pitch selection.

I totally missed that first paragraph and thought you were talking about Cody and Uggla this season.

After I went back and reread the post, all I can say is.....????? Are you not paying attention???

What does that mean? Do you have an actual point to disprove my assessment of Bonifacio or does "keep watching" sum up your rebuttal?

I have been. Just because some don't want to acknowledge them don't mean they aren't happening. So, keep watching. Maybe you will actually see what is happening. But if you are like some, probably not.

BroncoBob, since the 6th game of the season on Bonifacio has an OPS of 450ish and his K/BB ratio is 4/1. So once again you tell people they are wrong without actually making a point other than "haha your wrong! he got a hit today fool, the last month and half means nothing now" which is basically your entire argument style.

I think it's actually "What I can see is more important than stats."

That's always been his opinion, and he's entitled to it, but at some point even that doesn't hold anything. I'm not saying Bonifacio is at that point, because he does still show flashes of being a decent player, but the problem is he's been more inconsistent than anyone on the team.

Not just a hit or two, he is on a hitting streak right now, something like 6 games. Also, this selective memory that you mention is just as intellectually dishonest and convenient as ignoring the way he played the first couple games of the season in favor of the slump he fell into. Was that also a figment of our imaginations? (oh yea, I forgot, it was just a fluke) He may be a streaky hitter so lets not let any single stretch define a long season.

If anything, it is most fair to look at his overall numbers, which are not terrible. K/BB (33/9) is definitely troubling, and his low OBP (.308) reflects this. However his OPS is higher than both Cody's and Uggla's, which I highly doubt many EB haterz would have predicted, or maybe hadn't realized. Regardless, he is not the reason the Marlins are struggling right now.

I'm gonna go ahead and say a 25 game sample of .450 is way more telling than a 5 game sample of 1.450.

Yeah, it happened. Players have good games. But his entire resume isn't good enough as it is. Yeah, Uggla and Ross have been worse, but you can reasonably expect them to improve. Bonifacio is what he is. Is there anyone that really expects him to improve greatly?

He has been wildly inconsistent. Optimists might chalk it up to growing pains. IMO his early tear and recent resurgence does give reason to beleive that he is capable of more than strikeouts. Even with his wild swings and total lack of power, his SLG is .006 away from Uggla's, who has been the wrong kind of consistent this season.

I'm gonna go ahead and say a 25 game sample of .450 is way more telling than a 5 game sample of 1.450.

You talking about OPS? Well I don't know what "telling" means, but if you are suggesting that the season average will fall somewhere in between those, then I definitely agree.

If your point is that it will be closer to .450 than it will be to 1.450 I also agree, but with only that restriction it could still be over .800, or .900 if you like.

Again.

I'm not saying Uggla and Ross haven't been worse.

I'm saying it's pretty irrelevant. You have to be awfully optimistic about Bonifacio and awfully pessimistic about Uggla and Ross to believe that he'll continue out producing them.

No, saying that, he's not going to make or break our season. Uggla and Ross have much more to do with our offensive success.

EXCEPT

That we are still batting Bonifacio leadoff. You can take what he gives you in the 8th spot, but when he's getting more PAs than anyone it can cripple your offense. I'm not saying Ross or Uggla should be there, so don't bring them up. There's no rational argument to be made for Bonifacio in the lead off spot over Hermida. You can live with Bonifacio's .308 OBP and no sluggin skill if he's hitting 8th and playing good defense. But he kills an offense leading off.

I'm saying a 25 game sample is more indicative of his true skills. If he had a 1.450 OPS in 25 games and a .450 through 5, I'd be much higher on him.

sh*t, if he had managed a .650 over that 25 game stretch, I would've been much higher on him.

Why should we rely on such small stretches anyway? Lets stop drawing lines here and there and look at his season totals. He has the 5th best OBP on the team for guys with over 50 AB. It is not impressive, but the hate he gets here is out of proportion considering the struggles of other Marlins.

Anyhow, as far as his potential to imrpove... if he can strikeout a little less and walk a little more, we might start to see that OBP climb up into the realm of respectability. In the mean-time, I am not against moving Hermida to the leadoff spot.

120+ ABs is not a "small stretch". That is a decent fraction of the # of ABs he will get in a given season, and it is very telling.

Bonifacio has also never shown that he has the capacity to "strike out a little less and walk a little more"...his entire career he has been completely dependent on his BA for his OBP.

I agree, we should stop relying on small stretches. Besides small stretches, there hasn't been much good for the speedster.

Yes, good one. However, I am arguing that his overall numbers this season do not justify the hatred. He has not been our weakest link by any stretch of the imagination. I do not need to point to the first 6 games or the last 6 games. I am talking about an overall .250 BA and a .300 OBP. This is not great, and it might be exactly what some "haterz" expected. But it is not our biggest problem, and it is not that bad for a good defensive player in the 8 (or 9 spot).

Forget about arguing that he shouldn't lead off. I get it.
