Is It Time To Start Thinking Of Firing Fredi Gonzalez

Featured Replies

You don't know what the Marlins could have gotten for Cabrera. The only other offer I know of was from the Angels and it wasn't that impressive. In hindsight, we got two guys who could at least become something very good.

THe Dodgers offered Billingsley, Kempt and Loney but the Marlins said no.

There are a lot of teams who don't have 3 legitimate offensive all-stars and spend a heck of a lot more money than the Marlins so be grateful for what we have.

Why? Why do we deserve better, what about the fans of the Royals or Pirates who haven't had a winning record in forever, what do they deserve. You don't deserve nothing IT's Earned

Everything was hearsay. I severely doubt that that was really on the table and we don't take it. I even more severely doubt the Dodgers would actually part with Billingsley. Both him and Kershaw were very very likely pipe dreams.

I'd assume it was more likely Kemp or Ethier, Elbert (Who was injured), LaRoche, and junk. And we wanted better pitching.

This writer makes it sound like it was more than hearsay but we'll never know:

"The Dodgers tried to pry Cabrera away from the Marlins last summer when they discussed a deal that would have sent Matt Kemp, James Loney and Chad Billingsley to Florida, but the Marlins balked."

Oh, so you're talking about during the 2007 season, not during the offseason when he was traded.

Don't know how true that would be then, then. But you also have to know we would have been a lot less willing to trade Cabrera. First half of the season we were near-.500 (42-47) with JJ coming back (and, IIRC, Anibal a possibility) and Train, Olsen, and Mitre were at their best [they went to sh*t in the second half as did our team]

As much as I think this thread is pointless, I will put in my share of what I believe...

Fredi Gonzalez is a horrible manager. I've said it since the start...before his manager of the year talk, before the 11-1 start. He makes the STUPIDEST moves that I have seen in baseball. Why the hell would you let the pitcher bat in a tight game, only to replace him on the mound the next? Why the hell would you give a player "rest" when he is on a tear hitting homers left and right, then when he comes back, he cools down? Why the hell would you demote our "future all star" and replace him with another struggling player who has an even worse OPS?

It's moves like these that irritate the hell out of me! I'm sorry but any manager can have a good year with the talent of this team, but it takes a real manager to guide this talent to the promise land. If Girardi would have stayed as manager of this team, the Marlins would have made the playoffs by now, guranteed. I know he isn't exactly lighting it up in NY, but neither did Torre and look what he's doing in LA. I'm not saying we should have kept Girardi, because the problems with the FO would have caused a major problem. What I AM saying however is we need a manager of Girardi's passion.

I remember Girardi grabbing Olsen by the shirt and pushing him up against the wall screaming at him for his lack of production and concentration. And as I recall, Olsen went out and pitched pretty well. What did Olsen do with Fredi? Oh yeah, he was arrested and punched teammates. That is what this team needs. A manager who will wake them up. Who is not afraid to bench his all star if he is sucking it up (Uggla), but don't demote him (Maybin)...We need a manager who will strictly play to win, not kind enough to let everyone have an opportunity to play...this isn't little league.

With that said, I hope and pray the Front Office fires the hitting coach.

I don't disagree with the spirit of your post Fan, I'm not a huge fan of Gonzalez and I do miss some of the things that Girardi could do to get us fired up as opposed to Fredi's "It's got to get better" attitude.

Where I disagree with you is the handling of Maybin. I think it was obvious that Maybin was a bit over-matched at this point, and his last game where he was caught off base as a pinch runner pretty much sealed that. In Maybin's case, we may have gotten just as good of production out of him as anyone else we're likely to put in the OF, but it's not just a matter of current production. You have to consider what is best for Maybin and his future. When players are over-matched because they are rushed, it can shatter their confidence and make them develop bad habits that are extremely hard to break. I think it was foolish not to at least have a better fallback option in case Maybin failed, but I think sending him down was the right decision. Maybin can still learn more in the minors and he'll be doing it outside of the spotlight. I'm very optimistic that he will be able to help us out later this year.
