Well i like UZR/150, because regular UZR may give advantages to players for having more playing time, but, one at a time.

I should have used UZR/150 but was too lazy to look again after I noticed it.

The reason I thought we were better than I just found out we were was because: Cantu is an upgrade over Jacobs, Bonifacio is an upgrade over Cantu, Hanley ramirez has improved tremendously, Hermida switched to LF and isn't in RF anymore(well, he was), Uggla was an average defensive player, and Cody Ross is arguably a GG defensive outfielder.

After all that, I still can't believe we suck defensively.

Cantu is still an upgrade but is still below average at 1b; Bonifacio is an upgrade but is still below average at 3b; Hanley is much better; Hermida switched to LF but is still way below average ; Uggla is pretty much the worst 2nd baseman in baseball this year... So don't be surprised, Theres only a dramatic upgrade at SS

I just looked at fielders with "qualified innings".

Didn't look at catchers because I'm not sure if these stats are meaningful for catchers. Maybe they are but I'm not sure.

I don't know how they could do catchers. Wild pitches that should have been blocked, etc... How many times have we seen Baker go to his backhand instead of slideing to his right to block a pitch and keep it in front of him. JJ's "wild pitch" scored a run the other day. IMO a perfect example of a pitch that should/could have been blocked had the catcher not gone to his backhand to snag the ball. He does do a little better to his left, but it hasn't become "instinctive" (for lack of a better word) to his right.

Forget what non-Marlins game I was watching the other day, but one of their announcers was complaining about the same exact thing with their catcher not slideing to the right.

There must be some stat to show how many wild pitches and passed balls each catcher has. But I doubt there is one for wild pitches that could easily have been blocked. One of my pet peeves for a catcher.

A couple of years ago I put up some stats of the combined passed balls and wild pitches that our catchers were allowing and I'm almost positive you were one of two posters who ripped me about it.

Bronco doesn't believe in numbers. Numbers don't win games. Stats don't get you to the playoffs.

The heart can't count, ok?

I was watching a astros game and the announcer were ripping on Pudge because he did about 4times this one game and missed 2. They were tough plays but the guys were all over him.

If it wasnt for bakes bat i dont think hed be back there.

So hanley is basically the f***ing man and the outfield talk is dumb.

I didn't think being 2 spots higher than 3B Whipping Boynifacio makes you the man. Not to mention, EB played some solid OF himself. Even here, seems like their defensive skills are probably fairly comparable. Not like this metric is all-telling, anyhow.

He's the f***ing man because he's an above average defender at a premium position and is one of the 10 best bats in the game regardless of position. Not sure why you feel the need to bring up bonifacio here. I've never said anything about bonifacio except that he seems to struggle with bunts. That was pointless.

People always talk about moving hanley to the outfield, but he's actually been a solid defender and is turning into a good one. Along with his bat, he's insanely valuable. Good job missing my point entirely though.

I'd like it if one thread could to by with both supporters and detractors not needlessly bring up bonifacio out of nowhere.

Rab - RZR is "plays" divided by "balls in zone" so I adjust the "plays" by the difference between the OOZ plays made by a player and the OOZ plays that the average player would have made in his innings played.

Example:

Cantu has made 45 "plays" and has 60 balls in his zone

His RZR is .750

He has made 9 OOZ plays in 349 innings (one every 39 innings)

The average 1B has made one OOZ every 30 innings (301 in 9,143 innings so far this season)

The average 1B would have made 11.5 OOZ in Cantu's 349 innings

Subtract 2.5 "plays" from Cantu's 45 "plays" and his adjusted RZR is .709

Actually it was a discussion of not catching pitches but keeping the ball in front of them none-the-less. In any case, a far better discussion back in those days than your arguement of what time the sun sets affects our attendance.

That wasn't the game I was watching.

Baker has gotten better in the off season and during ST. Moves to the left fairly well. I just notice it more to his right. First instinct is to throw the glove over there instead of blocking it. But it took him a long time to get to this level and it will take some work to make those moves instictively instead of having to think about it. Last year behind the plate he was real bad. Even cost us a couple games, although a they were blamed on the board's whipping boy at that time. There has been progression. I don't think it was ever any question that it is his bat that keeps him in there.

What little I have seen of Hayes (few ST games) he looked like he was a defensive catcher. I really wouldn't mind seeing what he could do behind the plate at this level. Maybe let him have a shot with pitchers he knows, guys called up from AAA or something.

BTW It's "you're", not "your"....... You self appointed geniouses would come off better using correct spellings. Not that I can be any better..... But if you want to jump on other posters' slammings of me....

Really? That's where you are gonna go? That post is so great, I want to print it out and laminate it and carry it with me everywhere I go.
