May 26, 200917 yr I just looked at how our players are doing defensively based on a combination of RZR and OOZ. 1B Cantu - 21st out of 27 2B Uggla - 24th out of 26 (ouch!) SS Hanley - 8th out of 27 (keeps improving) 3B Whipping Boy - 10th out of 25 LF Hermida - 14th out of 16 (ouch!) RF Cody - 5th out of 21 ==== RZR - the proportion of balls hit into a fielder's zone that he successfully converted into an out. OOZ - the total number of outs made by a fielder on balls hit outside of his zone.
May 26, 200917 yr How are there only 16 left fielders? I honestly thought Cantu was doing a bit better than that. Do these ratings not apply to catchers?
May 26, 200917 yr Author I just looked at fielders with "qualified innings". Didn't look at catchers because I'm not sure if these stats are meaningful for catchers. Maybe they are but I'm not sure.
May 26, 200917 yr As a more general measure of how the whole team is doing, we have the 4th most errors in the major leagues with 37 (46 games)
May 26, 200917 yr Author Cantu surpirises me as well. I don't know if where the players are positioned (by the coaches, I suppose) impacts these stats.
May 26, 200917 yr BTW, OOZ and RZR, aren't that good. UZR is a step up, +/- is the best, but it's not free.
May 26, 200917 yr Author I'm not sure how UZR is calculated so I don't know if it's any good but Uggla and Hermida are pretty bad in it as well. http://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/index.php/uzr-tidbits-through-524
May 26, 200917 yr I know uzr stands for ultimate zone rating but exactly how does and work and what is it specifically measuring? Is it the number of balls a player gets to and makes outs on in and outta his zone?
May 26, 200917 yr Nny layed it down pretty good here http://www.marlinsbaseball.com/forums/topic/85846-explanation-of-in-depth-fielding-statistics/page__p__1745230__fromsearch__1entry1745230
May 26, 200917 yr those sound about right to me. Hanley looks really smooth this season at SS. A little surprised Cantu is that low on the scale.
May 26, 200917 yr Important for all of the people saying 'I can't believe cantu is so low', this represents a small sample size and is still prone to some fluctuations due to 'noise'. But would it really be surprising if the guy who's had hand ad wrist injuries all year isn't playing well?
May 26, 200917 yr Puma - I'm nobody. What do somebodies use that's free to use? UZR is the best for free. You can find it on Fangraphs.com

May 26, 200917 yr Author Based on this UZR stat the rankings are similar except for Whipping Boy and Cody. 1B Cantu - 17th out of 26 2B Uggla - 25th out of 25 SS Hanley - 5th out of 25 3B Whipping Boy - 20th out of 24 LF Hermida - 15th out of 16 RF Cody - 16th out of 21
May 26, 200917 yr So we still suck defensively? Doesn't seem like we do. Even if you look at "old school" defensive stats like errors, we still rank 27th out of 30. The bottom line is this team sucks defensively
