Five cops on paid leave after flushing fetus down the toilet.

MESA, Arizona - Five officers have been placed on paid leave after one allegedly flushed a fetus down a toilet, police officials say.

Four officers responding to a call about a possible miscarriage at a motel on Monday discovered a woman who apparently lost a fetus estimated to be 12 to 14 weeks old, Police Chief George Gascon told the East Valley Tribune/Scottsdale Tribune.

Gascon said an officer who wasn't at the motel instructed the four over the phone to flush the 4-inch fetus down the toilet rather than take it to a hospital.

A supervisor reading incident reports came across details about the fetus' disposal and shared them with a superior.

All five officers were placed on paid administrative leave pending an internal investigation, Gascon said.

WTF were they thinking?

Unfortunately it is not very difficult for anyone without a criminal record to become a cop in the United States, if you know what I mean...

I question why the officers would call another officer for advice. Why didn't someone of higher rank make this decision? Everything in a police dept goes on tape. It's easy enough to find out exactly what happened by listening to the recorded conversations.

This story sounds like too many key components were left out for the sake of sensationalism.

"Instead of taking it to the hospital" the article says... why the hell would they do that instead?

These types of miscarriages happen all of the time. In most cases the woman does not know she is pregnant and often passes the fetus into the toilet herself. However, one would expect the officers to take part in a more proper means of disposal out of respect.

This is the most intelligent post in this thread. Nonetheless, very poor judgement used by the officers.

So, basically, they get to go on vacation.

No. They have to be inside their residence during their normal work hours.

Sounds like the starting pay for new officers needs to be raised to encourage "smarter" people to become police officers. Also,be careful to lump all cops into the "it's not very difficult to become a cop" category. With nearly 1 million cops in this country, it's inevitable that some bad apples will fall through the cracks.

Issues about proper disposal of human remains.

The only one that should be in trouble here is the dispatcher who told them to flush the fetus.
