Posted June 15, 200915 yr People were rioting in the streets of L.A. last night getting arrested, turning over cars, starting fires, etc. That seems to happen everywhere in the country when a local team wins a championship. Except here. Here we go out in the streets and jump up and down and scream and shout for a few hours then go home. There's no rioting and only a few people get arrested. So is it because: A. We're so used to winning championships (8 since the 'Canes football team won their first in '83) that we don't get as excited as everywhere else. Has any city had 8 championships (12 if you count the 'Canes baseball team) in the last 26 years? B. We're just more civilized than the rest of the country. or C. We're not as passionate as the rest of the country. Some people say South Florida has the worst fans. Only Dolphin games are sold out regularly, but then again there's only 8 to 10 of those a season.

Why don't we riot here? I don't know, but I'm glad we don't. Rioting after a championship doesn't have anything to do with how passionate sports fans in a particular town are. I can't think of a more stupid way to react then flipping cars or starting fires. How is trashing your city a form of celebration?
June 15, 200915 yr It's definitely not A. The Lakers alone have won seven chamionships since '83, then count the Dodgers WS, the Angels WS, all of the USC football chamionships, the UCLA basketball championships, etc. I'll take B, I think it's an L.A. thing.
June 15, 200915 yr I guess it's B, which kind of surprises me... all that just goes to show how "civilized" most people really are. I mean how stupid do you have to be to think that trashing your city is a good way to celebrate.
June 15, 200915 yr Other than L.A., the only other pro sports rioting I've heard of was in Philadelphia. Must be something in the Quesadillas and Cheese Steaks that makes people act stupid.

I think Boston rioted the night the Sox won the World Series in '04. If I'm not mistaken, a few people were killed. Pretty ridiculous.

There was a girl that died after being hit in the face by a rubber bullet shot by police. Don't remember if that was a full on riot or not.

Well nobody died last night in LA, so I don't know if you can describe what happened in Boston as "not as bad" as LA. I think when a "celebration riot" ends in loss of life, then it is worse then destroyed property. That said, it is all stupid.
June 16, 200915 yr Not quite sure why u would start riots if ur team won a championship. On the contrary, my team Rangers lost the 2008 UEFA Cup Final in Manchester - there were approximately 150,000 Rangers fans who travelled down to Manchester, with the majority watching the game in public areas which had big screens. A culmination of the 2-0 loss and the fact some of the big screens failed to work meant frustrations rose and riots started - ended up being 42 arrests and 15 policemen injured. I am not condoning riots but I can understand why they happen following a loss, but not a victory.
June 16, 200915 yr Don't start riots, there stupid. It's an LA thing. The onyl reason Philadelphia had a riot was because it was their first championship in the last 25 years, and because they knew it was probably their last. Yea, run around drunk and scream. But don't start fires or flip over cars.
June 18, 200915 yr Detroit riots after their championships too. Miami is an oddity. After Hurricanes and natural disasters people band together and help each other out. After winning championships we embrace it and party. Its just those other days when nothing extraordinary happens is when we are all jerks and hate each other, personally I think its the heat and humidity. In my opinion I think this town just loves to party and have a good time and championships are great excuses for it.
June 18, 200915 yr Yeah why is this an issue? Leave it how it is, i'd rather have a great time partying after a championship than having to be worried about random acts of violence.
June 19, 200915 yr Author Yeah why is this an issue? Leave it how it is, i'd rather have a great time partying after a championship than having to be worried about random acts of violence. Apparently you misunderstand me. I have no problem with how we celebrate. I was just wondering why we're different than everyone else. And we don't get any props from the media for it either.

So far the examples have been LA, a city with a history of rioting, Detroit, a city with a history if rioting, and Philly, a city with infamous sport fans.

June 20, 200915 yr Most of you guys are probably too young to remember the race-related riots in Miami in the early eighties but they were bad. They were not sports riots but there was plenty of looting and car burning and violence. It was not a good time. When people have a lot of pent up frustration it just takes a little spark to set them off. In the eighties Miami was very racially/ethnically charged (more than now). There was alot of violence going on and the police departments were dealing with a lot of corruption. Imagine how it is in LA and Detroit all the time and especially now that things in California are so bad economically (come to think of it things are bad in Detroit too... it may be a good thing the Red Wings and the Pistons didn't win any titles this year). Don't get me wrong, I'm not condoning or excusing rioting. There are just certain conditions that predispose to it no matter what city it is. Miami is no better or no worse.
June 26, 200915 yr Yeah why is this an issue? Leave it how it is, i'd rather have a great time partying after a championship than having to be worried about random acts of violence. first of all, it's not an issue, he's just expressing his opinion and point of view. second of all, leave it how it is? he's not going to change anything by talking about it. geez

So used to winning championships? As in the 0 in hockey, 2 in baseball, 0 in recent football, and 1 in basketball? Thats not tons. College does not count. Period. It appeals to a much smaller or rather much more selective audience. We are not so much civilized as we are a true mixture of fans. And we have so many elderly. And we are a giant suburbia. Its not as easy to go and celebrate in the streets in Florida as it is in LA, New York, or Boston. Attendance is more or less because of the depressing teams put on display. The Panthers are playoffless in 10 years now. Everyone knows they "suck". the Marlins have consistently traded away beloved fan favorite players in the past half decade and also have failed to make the playoffs in some 5 or 6 years. And are notorious for being cheap. The AA was empty two years ago when the Heat put up that rather unimpressive season. Maybe we are bandwagon fans... but that attendance is not normal.
June 30, 200915 yr every place has bandwagon fans...the celtics were literally almost paying people to go to the garden 3 years ago... the bruins before last year were the same way...and dont even get me started on the bandwagons for the pats and red sox... and yes...1 girl was killed in boston after the 04' world series...by a stupid cop who shot into the crowd, rather than having a particular target...and the crowd wasnt even that bad i think while riots frequent LA more often...it can happen in any city
