I didn't say great platoon. What's so great about it?

There's no way that this franchise would potentially go out and buy a bat(who can also defend) for a playoff run this year for say 1-2M, unless there's a place for this player. That's where Hermida comes in, or should I say, goes away.

What's bad about the platoon? As long as Carroll can hold his end of the bargain (.700 OPS + big defense) vs Hermida's (.800 OPS + average defense), that's a good platoon.

And, before OOTP comes in, I don't like UZR and think it's a bad measurement of outfield defense. I'll stick with +/-, which has him at 0 in RF this year.

Is that average among "qualified" fielders or among fielders with at least the number of innings Jeremy has played?

When you guys post these +/- numbers you should also post where that particular ranks among qualified fielders or among fielders with xxx number of innings.

You guys are missing the bigger point here! The Pirates said "No Thanks" implying that Hermida was not worth trading Capps to them. For all of you Hermida lovers out there this speaks volumes so listen to what you're hearing.

OH NO!

Possibly the worst organization in all of baseball said no!?!?

The Pirates...so smart with their 15 years of losing. So great that their fans wanted to boycott certain games last year to make a statement!

So great that the players in the organization are complaining to the front office for giving up on them in the middle of the year this year.

THOSE PIRATES?

So great that that they have spent June/July trading their best players????

Thank you Erick for placing me with people saying to start Carroll against both righties and lefties, as always you find a way to put words into other peoples mouths.

The reason Hermida is tradable is because the team has seen Maybin has been contributing and playing very well for a long time now and is very near if not already major league ready. That obviously would mean calling him up soon (trade deadline when we trade Hermida) Maybin goes to CF, Cody to RF, and Coghlan stays in LF. Even then we still have guys like De Aza, Carroll, etc... to get place starts when these guys need a day off. Hermida is extremely expendable, and his lack of production for over a year and a half now is the reason teams value him less than some people here believe he is worth. At this point last year he was considered a key point to get Manny Ramirez, now he isn't even worth Capps in a package centered around him. At this point it seems blantant the front office wants some help in the bullpen in trading Hermida, seems like we still haven't found a team that really values him enough to trade their closer.

I don't believe I did, but ok.

Anyways...Maybin is still unproven. I'd rather stick with a very good platoon in RF + the solid bullpen we currently have, in the middle of a race, and maybe call Maybin up in September. There's no need to rush him & stick him in the middle of a divisional race.

Matt Capps isn't a difference maker.

100% agreed.

Add another 100%

It's BS though. Hermida is 25 years old. He had an . 870 OPS TWO YEARS ago. You can't just give up on him.

Hermida is currently not playing up to, nevermind exceeding, his contract. Next season he'll receive at least a million more, maybe two solely based on service time. In 2007 he was making chump change so getting hot for eleven weeks after missing the first month and a half of the season and putting up some phenomenal numbers in the process is great but this is 2009 and he's not. Nor is there any evidence he'll perform better in 2010. Someone can correct me but the closest to catching fire offensively this year was one five game streak. Otherwise his numbers have trended down for two months (more or less).

This is not a matter of "giving up" on anyone, it's solely a matter of moving on without a player who can't perform up to the level expected for what he's being a paid. There isn't a single person on this board who doesn't want Hermida to go on another eleven week ball bashing marathon but recognizing that he's looking less and less capable of that is just being realistic.

HE'S not playing up to his contract? Oh please, we can make that argument for a certain guy who went to arbitration, got 5 million, and is currently hitting an approximate .230... I hate that this argument of not living up to the contract is used solely on ONE player.

Wait, hold on a second. You're telling me Hermida, who is 25, is FAR removed from the learning curve, but Bonifacio isn't? Bonifacio is 24 years old. And if you bring up the fact that he is actually hitting the ball now, let me remind you about 2007. You know, when Hermida was 22 years old, and was good for more than 2 weeks.

If Hermida is gone because he isn't producing and is far from the learning curve, then Bonifacio should have been gone the first day of June.

The reason being for that is that Bonifacio is "electric" he makes things happen with his speed and motivates the team. On the other hand, Hermida has nothing going for him, he's 25, he's still out there dropping fly balls and trying to show us he can hit. We can't be waiting around forever on him, we've already been waiting for what? 4 years? I haven't believed in the guy since day one, I don't know if he's ever going to live up to his potential.

LOL! Electric. You're funny. Bonifacio doesn't do sh!t with his speed. He hardly gets on base, and when he does, he's a retart on the base paths. Bonifacio hasn't done anything so far to warrant playing time.

Hermida, on the other hand, showed us the potential he is capable of in 2007, when he was 22. Right now, he is only 25. You do NOT give up on a player this early into his career.

What I'm trying to say is that Bonifacio has speed that your not going to find around for a very long time, he can make things happen which is why they're willing to work with him. Hermida did have a great 2007 but he's fallen ever since, you either have to let the guy go or he has to take a minor league option(if he even has one) to work on his stuff, he can't keep letting the team down like this, and it's not only his offense, but his defense sucks! He messes up on things you learn in little league!

Oh, that's right, 'cause Bonifacio doesn't "mess up on things you learn in little league" ;)

after tonight the Pirates better be asking for a bucket of baseballs

And after today, should they trade us their entire team? Should we continue to trade him based off day-to-day values???? Your post was irrelevant and bitter.

lol girl on a rampage
