7/9 Post Game

I would say West is far and away the better candidate, considering his 4.29 BB/9 and 1.17 K/BB. He just has not pitched well since coming up and I wonder how much longer he'll be in the majors.

Also it's completely ignoring his ability to prevent XBH. Yes, his control isn't great, I'm not really trying to say it's anything but average at best. But his line as a whole, which is what matters more, is good since coming back from injury. His OPS against (and, with a .300 BABIP shows that it isn't deflated but rather what to expect) would rank him 48th and ahead of Chris Volstad. His ERA, his FIP, everything says that he's doing fine.

Volstad, West and Miller all have pretty similar numbers.

Since coming back Miller has a 4.04 ERA and has an OPS allowed of .728 OPS.

West also has a terribly low BABIP (.234) and you look at how bad his walks and his strike outs and his homeruns are and it doesn't look bright if it continues down that path

Let's keep in mind that West is basically a year ahead of his development after having that surgery, so we are still seeing the unpolished West.

Further explaining why he shouldn't be here

I'm not quite as upset as I was last night (because the Marlins got the win) but Andrew Miller seems like a mess and I wonder if he should be down in AAA working some things out. He was all over the place last night and consistently fell behind in the count.

I don't know what Badenhop's status is after that shot to the knee, but I sure would like to see Vanden Hurk throwing every fifth game instead of Miller, especially if the Marlins think they are trying to make the playoffs this season.

I'm not defending his performance from last night because that was horrible, but in the 10 starts prior to last night since coming back from injury he had a 3.47 BB/9 (league average 3.53), 7.84 K/9, 1.32 WHIP, .304 BABIP, 3.92 ERA, 3.70 FIP. He threw a pitch for a strike 65% of the time (league average 62%), By basically any measure he pitched like a #2 since coming back from injury.

And last nights debacle doesn't then blow up those stats, it only raises them a little bit (i.e. 3.58 BB/9 now since coming back from injury).

Wanting to send him down just because of one bad start is ludicrous.

It's been more than one bad start. Using your stat, he hasn't thrown 60% of his pitches for strikes in any one of his last three starts, a span in which he's given up 14 runs in 15 innings. Luckily for him, West has been worse and will probably go before him but that doesn't mean Miller belongs here.

Because 59.5% of strikes instead of 60 is breaking

Again I never said he had anything better than average control.

but again, IT'S THE OVERALL LINE that matters. his control isn't great. ok, oh well. he still strikes people out. he still limits extra base hits. So he's not JJ and does everything awesomely. Oh well.

I can't believe some big hooplah was made about some boston red soxs announcer saying Volstad should be sent down, how everyone called him an idiot, but both him and Miller have basically the same end results and Miller shouldn't be close to a major league roster but sending Volstad down is idotic.

Considering his numbers in AA when he was called up, it's quite evident that he was rushed out of desperation when that slot in the rotation was in shambles (Koronka, Taylor). I think most people didn't expect his immediate success to sustain very long. However, if he can duplicate his line over the second half (aware of the BABIP), or atleast come close, I'll be more than satisfied.

I think the thing between Volstad and Miller is that people realize that Miller is a broken prospect and Volstad isn't. Simple as that. And without unlimited options to bring up for guys that are struggling, it has to be Miller that goes first before Volstad.

1) how is one broken and the other isn't?

2) if Volstad was the "real" prospect, wouldn't it make more sense that he goes down and "learns"? The notion is that Miller is "broken" because he's pitched in the majors, yet you'd rather keep the "unbroken" prospect in the majors.

and for clarrification I'm not advocating for Volstad to be sent down, just that I think it's hilarious that most people find the notion of one being sent down idiotic but that the other shouldn't be on a ML roster when they basically have the same results. I hate to use the term considering it's notations but if there really is board golden boys it'd be Volstad and Coghlan, they can't do no wrong in most of your eyes. And it's just hilarious that the two "hated" players in Hermida and Andrew are either outperforming (by 50 OPS!) or performing at the same rate and ones the reason the team sucks and doesn't belong on any ML roster and the other is Totalyl Awesome 5000 v2.0 that can't be critiqued at all.

Certainly not hating on Coghlan or Volstad, not hating on any player. Just find the notions you guys have funny.

Volstad has nothing to "learn" by going down. Plus he's been hurt a lot by inherited runners scoring (5 out of 7) the others haven't, especially West. Miller and especially Volstad are still young and will be fine.

I agree that both are fine, not advocating otherwise. Just using other people's theories on themselves.

good point

Why would Volstad be sent down? His WHIP, BB/9, SO/BB are all better than Miller's (unless I'm mistaken, they are also better since the injury). Volstad's ERA is a bit high but most of his walks and hits numbers are lower than they were last season when he put up a 2.88 ERA over 14 starts. His main problem this season has been the long ball.

You may have a point with West (as they've been more or less comparable stastically in terms of performace) but I'm more inclined to be patient with him than I otherwise would be with Miller. Miller has 255 innings under his belt now and 46 career starts. The fact that his performance is marginally better than West (who is two years younger and has endured a torn labrum) is a bit discouraging.

Finally, I'm not demanding that Miller be sent down. I am merely expressing disgust in watching the Marlins presumably out of the game in the second inning (let's face it, overcoming those deficits can't be expected if you take Friday as an example) while we have Vanden Hurk throwing well in the PCL.

Jesus Christ, It's one bad game. ONE! Since his injury he has been good, but because of ONE bad game, you want him to be sent down?

Volstads ERA is a bit high due to pitching "wrong" for two games, the Cards and Red sox games not throwing many sinkers and a lot of inherited runners scoring in addition to too many home runs. The HR problem could end as quickly as it started.

Go back to last Friday's post-game thread...you'd be amazed.
