Posted July 31, 200915 yr One has to assume with the acquisition of Nick Johnson that Bonifacio is going to the bench with Cantu shifting to 3B and Nick Johnson to 1B.
July 31, 200915 yr Don't be surprised to see a Cohglan/Bonifacio platoon in LF. Fine with me. As long as he's not starting every game.

July 31, 200915 yr I am perfectly fine with a platoon of Boni vs LHP, Coghlan vs RHP, that would actually fit the best interests of the team. Hell Boni is hitting .308 against LHP, we may actually begin to see the good Boni every time he starts.
July 31, 200915 yr Meh Platoon him in left since he's done well vs Lefties and C.C. Hasn't. So we have 2 Platoons in the OF, Cantu at 3rd and Nick"The Stick" Johnson at 1st. I'm pretty satisfied but I really wanted another SP like Duke, Pavano, Maholm or Bannister.

Most teams didn't even trade at all at the break, be glad we did SOMETHING that was beneficial to the team. And if you would've heard the asking price for both Duke and Bannister you would've laughed in the Pirates and Royals faces as well. Maholm would've been a nice underrated trade, but don't be surprised if he gets put on waivers, and we could possibly claim him in August.

And there really is hardly a contender out there that didn't make some kind of trade in the last week. Only the Angels and Rays that I can think of.
July 31, 200915 yr i would not mind the platoon but dont forget someone has to go down and i think that would be sanchez. i think this will really improve our team and cmon our 2 hole hitter has a .293 obp while johnson has a .408 and is hitting .295.
July 31, 200915 yr A platoon isnt likely. Bonifacio will be the full-time starter.  Probably not. He'll probably be the Amezaga start 4 games a week at 3 positions guy and still get pretty significant playing time. CC will hit against RHP. This team understands platoon splits.
July 31, 200915 yr The team understands platoons but doesnt use logic at all when it comes to Bonifacio.
July 31, 200915 yr The team understands platoons but doesnt use logic at all when it comes to Bonifacio.  The Marlins got their man. They pinpointed Nationals first baseman Nick Johnson as their top priority heading toward the 4 p.m. non-waiver trade deadline and consummated the deal in the waning moments. The Marlins will send Double-A left-hander Aaron Thompson, the 22nd overall pick in the 2005 draft, to the Nationals, who are covering all but the prorated minimum ($142,000) of Johnson's remaining salary ($1.95 million). "He's a special player, plain and simple," Marlins owner Jeffrey Loria said. "You put him into this equation, it makes it very interesting? It doesn't guarantee anything, but it certainly makes the possibilities more interesting." Johnson will join the Marlins in time for Saturday's game. He will play first and bat second, giving the Marlins the steady on-base presence they desperately need ahead of Hanley Ramirez and Jorge Cantu. Cantu said he had no qualms about moving back across the diamond to third. Regular third baseman Emilio Bonifacio will take on a super utility role, a la Alfredo Amezaga. Eligible for free agency after this season, the left-handed hitting Johnson was batting .295 with a .408 on-base percentage in 424 plate appearances for the Nationals. He is a career .319 hitter (29 for 91) with a .466 on-base percentage at Land Shark Stadium. I know it's been your schtick for the last month or so to play the resigned "Bonifacio is going to start forever. Why fight it" role, but it was pretty obvious what this move meant.

July 31, 200915 yr Sorry, I will believe when I see it. He has the most ABs on the team(he has roughly 10 games worth of more ABs than the next closest players), has appeared at 5 different positions just so they could keep him in the lineup, and has batted leadoff or 2nd continuously, only Cody and Uggla have appeared in more games. I just dont see this changing anything. Bonifacio will simply move from 3B full time to LF full time. I also find it funny that when it came to his opinion on trades Sampson was a moron who shouldnt be listened to, but when it comes to using players his word is taken at face value.
July 31, 200915 yr Spike, it has also been reported in an article before the trade went down that Bonifacio will be in a utility role. And he has the most ABs because he's always batting leadoff or second, and never draws any walks.
July 31, 200915 yr I understand that, although he has 30 more PAs than the next closest player as well. But aside from that, once again, I will believe it when I see it.
July 31, 200915 yr Also, Andy Gonzalez has been sent down. And he was considered as the utility player. There has to be someone to take his place, and the only one that can do it is Bonifacio.

July 31, 200915 yr I believe it now and am very happy. I still assume that his "super utility" role will involve 5 starts a week. Just saying.
