Don't Want to Get Everyone's Hopes Up For Nothing, But....

Y'all could just place more weight on your eyes as a stat tool defensively as you try to figure out the formulas that the stats presently use... :thumbup

And that's how Jeter wins 3 Gold Gloves.

Jeter wins 3 gold gloves because he's a pretty face in the biggest media market playing on the world's most popular team. Anyone with half a brain....make that anyone with some brain activity...can see with their own eyes that he shouldn't even rate a mention as a Gold Glove possibility....and he wouldn't if he played in Kansas City.

I don't know how Jeter is doing now defensively but early I the year when we were playing them I believe he was a +3 and was having one of his best defensive seasons. Now a lot could have changed since then.

Pierremvp, have you ever seen Sheffield play defense on a regular basis?

Yes...I've seen him play on a regular basis. At his peek defensively, years ago, he was imo average. Now, with limited play over the last few years and his age, he figures to be below average. Sheffield vs. Jeremy I see as a plus offensively. On defense, in a short-time frame in the heat of a pennant race(and hopefully playoffs) I have to give Sheffield an ever so slight nod over Jeremy defensively. They both are below average. But Sheffield I feel, especially with his experience in the park, can at least play competently and not cost us a run or an extra base as much as Jeremy. He knows his limitations. He's got confidence. He still has a decent arm(I think). He knows where to throw the ball. He's money-motivated to give it his all for 6 weeks. He's a proven winner. Jeremy is working with legs 15 years younger. He's faster, and has the skill to get to balls that Sheff doesn't have a shot at. But Jeremy is normally found running around RF like a deer lost in the headlights, not confident enough to go for balls he can catch. And he's lazy at getting to and throwing back balls that he gets to. And he does have that problem of just not being aware of his place in space and time, as most of us understand this concept.

I'm not a scout nor will I try and act like a scout. Nor do I think I can completely grasp every single batting ball and how big of an impact the defense had on that batted ball in a 162 game season to qualify how good each single play was. Much like I can't tell the difference between a .750 OPS bat and a .800 OPS bat over a 162 game season simply with my eyes. I'm far from being arrogant enough to think that just my eyes can determine everything that is needed to quantify every single play every single player makes defensively. Some people earned that right of arrogance and that's why they're paid money for it.

And anyway defensive numbers basically replicate what good scouts say and quantify them with a set number.

It's the managers that vote on the award.

Just the idea of getting Sheffield....

Why? He's a headcase, a troublemaker, and an asshole. Considering we don't need him whatsoever, I'll pass.
