August 20, 200916 yr i dont want him. id rather give ab's to guys like maybin and morrison if he comes up. sheffield imo is more of a name then he is a player right now. edit- just checked the numbers, he is having a pretty good year, but unless we are letting jeremy go then i wouldnt do it because there would be a huge overload in the of when we call maybin and carrol back up Sheff can also play 1B and he did start his career off at 3b :whistle

Second, Shef is basically a cripple in baseball age. There is no way he can handle 3B at this stage of his career. You're looking at a platoon LF bat, and coming off the bench.

He better be, I feel like we could've won today's game and the second game of the doubleheader if only he never got hurt...
August 20, 200916 yr jon garland also passed through waivers. so he can be traded to any team. i don't think he's that good but would anyone be interested??
August 20, 200916 yr I'd take Garland. i wonder how much he makes for the rest of the season. and if the dbacks would give us 2.5 million so we can decline his option for next season i guess it wouldn't be a bad pickup. although i think some other desperate team in a playoff race would be willing to offer alot.
August 20, 200916 yr id take anyone out there who will give us quality innings and keep us in ballgames most of the time and not go 4 innings everytime out. id take garland or davis if the d backs pay some of the salary. especially garland.

August 20, 200916 yr garland has been a pretty good pitcher actually, and as our 4th starter would be great, we just cant continue with this rotation and hope to make the playoffs. hopefully anibal will come back strong but even then id want an innings eater like garland to really be omfortable with our rotation
August 20, 200916 yr Some more tidbits on the Fish from http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/columns/story?columnist=stark_jayson&page=rumblings090820&campaign=rss&source=MLBHeadlines FLORIDA MARLINS Here's something that's never a good sign:when your opponents have a higher batting average and on-basepercentage in the ninth inning than any other inning. That's a stat that applies to your 2009 Marlins. And it hangs over ateam trying to shock the world and sneak into the postseason with a$36.8 million payroll. The Marlins' first-half closer was Matt Lindstrom,a man with a 6.15 ERA who has allowed 16.57 baserunners per nineinnings this year despite great stuff. Their second-half closer hasbeen Leo Nunez, another guy with terrific stuff who has thrown just 51 percent of hispitches for strikes this year -- and has served up nine homers. "Nunez has a great arm, but he's a thrower, not a pitcher," one scoutsays. "To me, he's kind of like a better version of Jesus Colome. And Lindstrom is a guy with good stuff, but he doesn't trust it and hehas no idea where it's going. So I'd be searching the woods forsomebody [better] if I were them. A guy like [John] Smoltz would have been a perfect acquisition for them." Ready to rumble • Wig-Wagging: A scout who covers the Florida State League reports, after watching Billy Wagner throw, that there is "no doubt" Wagner could help somebody in the big leagues if the Mets can find a trade partner."Isaw him twice, and he was impressive," the scout said. "He was throwing92 to 94 [mph], and he was throwing strikes. The breaking-ball commandwas not real good. But everything else was the old Billy Wagner." Twoteams that other clubs' scouts believe have some interest are the Raysand Marlins. But Wagner's $10.5 million contract (which has more than$2.5 million remaining through the end of the season, plus a $1 millionbuyout of his 2010 option) likely would be too pricey for both of thoseteams. But other clubs believe that the Mets will have to eat a majorchuck of that money if they expect to land a decent prospect in returnfor Wagner.
August 20, 200916 yr The Mets released Livan Hernandez to make room for Billy Wagner, according to Bart Hubbuch of the New York Post.Hernandez signed with the Mets last offseason for $1MM plus incentives, and took the hill 23 times this year. His numbers aren't impressive, but they're not much different than expected; in 135 innings he allowed164 hits and walked 51, striking out 75 batters. Hmmm......
August 20, 200916 yr Including his 2.5m option, garland has ~4m left on his contract if they pay 3 mill id definitely give them a lower level pitching prospect for him

August 20, 200916 yr I'd love Sheff to come off our bench but we know that's going to happen. He's going to want at least a brief starting role, probably 3 or 4 games a week and he's not the greatest defensive player or clubhouse guy so pass on him. I'd love to get Livan Though. He's an innings eater, we love him down here and he's a veteran who knows the division plus he's done well vs the Nats and Braves this season but was lit up by the Phillies in his only outing against them giving up 7 Runs on 10 Hits.
August 20, 200916 yr August 20, 2009 SHEFF AND METS AT ODDS By JOEL SHERMAN Gary Sheffield asked the Mets for a contract extension, the club rejected the oveture and now Sheffield has threatened to leave the team and head home, two sources told the Post. As of 6:30 p.m., one of the sources said, Mets officials and Sheffield were in discussions on how to move forward. There was a possibility that the Mets could release Sheffield. Sheffield had been part of the original lineup for Thursday night's game against the Braves. But Jerry Manuel said that Sheffield had pulled himself to clear his head. Posted by Joel Sherman on August 20, 2009 6:29 PM http://blogs.nypost....f_and_mets.html Gary Sheffield is one of the few 40 year olds that could be named the most immature player in a team full of 23 year olds like the Marlins.
August 20, 200916 yr Aw Gary Sheffield. The only current major leaguer to get kicked off his little league team (temporarily) because he chased his coach with a bat. Oh good times...
August 20, 200916 yr Problem solved. Let's get Wagner via waivers, let's get Sheff and let's get Livan Hernandez! :whistle
