Reports: Heat F Beasley goes into rehab

Miami Heat forward Michael Beasley has entered a rehabilitation hospital in Houston to address possible substance and psychological issues, multiple media outlets reported Monday.

 

Beasley, who last year was hit with a $50,000 fine stemming from an incident at the NBA's annual rookie symposium, checked into an unidentified facility in Houston this past weekend, the reports said, citing unnamed sources.

 

The Heat and the NBA declined comment to Yahoo! Sports, which first reported the story.

 

A photo of the No. 2 pick in the 2008 NBA Draft was posted Friday to his Twitter account, in which Beasley is displaying a new tattoo across his shoulders.

 

That image also captured what appeared to be a small plastic bag on an adjacent table, the contents of which were unclear.

 

Beasley's Twitter account has since been closed, as is another one he used earlier this year.

 

Beasley, who averaged 13.9 points and 5.4 rebounds during his rookie season, was fined by the NBA in September after acknowledging he was involved in an incident involving teammate Mario Chalmers and Memphis' Darrell Arthur at the Rookie Transition Program that month.

 

The NBA said Beasley, the No. 2 overall pick, originally failed to cooperate with the league investigation of the matter. The Heat said Beasley eventually chose to reveal that he was part of the incident.

 

Chalmers and Arthur, former Kansas teammates, were fined $20,000 apiece after being banished from the rookie symposium.

 

They were found in a room at the resort where the event was taking place with two women -- which violated NBA policy for the event. Security at the resort said the scent of marijuana was detected, but no drugs or drug paraphernalia were found, and Chalmers and Arthur both insisted they were not using any illegal substances.

 

Beasley's involvement in the incident was unclear.

I saw this on the ESPN news bottom line. He checked in some where in Houston.

The drafting of Beasley is looking worse and worse each day. Remember he and Chalmers got fined for smoking marijuana at the rookie camp. Beasley in the past got expelled from every high school he went to. I like the possibilities Beasley presents us, but it's beginning to seem like his off field issues may overshadow his on field production soon. Imagine if we could won the lottery and drafted Derrick Rose...

 

 

I'd also like to say some of his posts on twitter are pretty alarming. He has some mental issues that he needs to get fixed, same with his drug issues. Jesus this announcement really pissed me off. You get payed millions by the NBA and you can't clean up your act? You don't really deserve to be in the league if you are making the same mistakes at age 20 that you made at age 16, especially when you are the #2 pick in the draft last year.

 

Anyway get better soon Beasley and grow up.

 

Case in point, his trade value is falling rapidly, all of us who were hoping for the Beasley-Bosh swap should reconsider.

LOL, apparently the reason he is going to rehab is because the picture that he posted on twitter of the tattoo on his shoulder...well there was a marijuana joint in the background of the picture, leading to people taunting him via twitter/websites/etc... and he basically posted "I'm a huge tool! I don't wanna live" and checked into rehab because the Heat told him to.

 

 

And I actually learned something today. I didn't know until today that when Mario Chalmers and Darell Arthur were kicked out of the rookie orientation that Michael Beasley actually snuck out of the room where they were smoking weed when the police arrived, and Pat Riley actually made him tell the truth to the media. That is the epitome of immaturity, I mean leaving a current teammate and friend out to dry and avoiding taking the heat, that really is low.

 

Beasley is an odd case, I really don't know what to make of him, but I do know he needs to pick better taste in tattoos.

I'll admit I don't follow much basketball just what I hear on 790 and see on Sportscenter. This Beasley kid doesn't seem like the sharpest tool in the shed.

I don't think drafting Beasley was a mistake in any way. He was clearly the best player available and is immensely talented. This situation doesn't change that. He seems to me a kid that doesn't have the tools right now to handle the responisbilities he now has. Hopefully rehab will help him develop those tools and become a more mature person. He also needs a good PR guy to teach him what he should or shouldn't share with the public.

 

Beasley reminds me a lot of Carmelo and what he went through early in his career. He was kind of the same free spirit and then he got into trouble with that "no snitching" gang video. Only after he had to go through all of the trouble that followed that did he seem to "get it" and become a more mature person and subsequently became a better player. Maybe some players need a humbling experience to make them focus on their lives and careers.

 

Anyway, I doubt this will have any impact on his season. He'll be back for training camp and he'll be saying all of the right things. Certainly you don't want to see someone get to the point where his employer "encourages" him into rehab, but I think this will only end up being a positive thing for all involved.

I disagree. Pat Riley and Spoelstra were discussing having Beasley become the starting small forward this season and some time at PF. Now with all these things occuring, I don't see how Spoelstra allows him to just come right back in and win the starting spot. He'll be coming off the bench once again this season, and don't be surprised early on to see Beasley getting only 8-10 per game to send a message to him.

 

And I ee where you are getting at with the Carmelo comparison, as they both have suffered marijuana controversies their rookie season and early on, but I think Carmelo was in a better mental state early on in his career than Beasley is currently. Let's remember also that Carmelo came into the league immediately, showed composure, won the starting SF spot in Denver and averaged 21 ppg while finishing 2nd in ROTY voting. Beasley had every chance to claim that starting spot last seasosn, but he showed inconsistancies all season long, and he lost his starting spot to backups like Diawara and Jones (who is an ok starter). Spoelstra really did give him every chance to prove himself, the problem is he wasn't and still isn't ready to be the #2 guy in Miami next to Wade, and that is a shame. His immaturity is really holding him back, if he would just grow up he could be one hell of a player.

Sorry, but I don't see how you know what Beasley's "mental state" is. Because of something he posted on Twitter? I know the guy is immature, but without any other facts, we don't know anything about his mental status. And I wasn't necessarily comaparing him basketball-wise to Carmelo, although they are fairly similar. My point was Carmelo had the same issue with marijuana AND was involved in some way with Baltimore gangs. He had a sort of fall from grace early in his career and came under a lot of scrutiny. The same thing is now happening with Beasley. All I was saying is that Carmelo ended up making a life change and became a better player because of it. I think Beasley can make a similar turn around. It's far to early to write off a 20 year old simply because he is making the mistakes a lot of 20 year olds make.
