johan santana is the latest to go down, as you probably know, he's not starting tomorrow, and there's a chance he won't pitch until 2011 if he has to get tommy john.

Johan Santana(notes) and Jeff Francoeur(notes) are the latest Mets stars to be sidelined with injuries.

Santana was scratched Monday from his next scheduled start because of discomfort in his pitching elbow. Francoeur has a torn ligament in his left thumb, leaving New York without its right fielder and top hitter.

The setback involving Santana is particularly alarming for the fourth-place Mets, who are counting on the two-time Cy Young Award winner to lead their rotation for years to come.

“He has not been throwing between starts for quite awhile. I would say since before the All-Star break. He has been pitching with this problem, but not with the level of discomfort he has now, New York manager Jerry Manuel said Monday after his team’s 6-2 loss to Philadelphia. “Now, it concerns him.

Santana had been slated to pitch Tuesday night in Florida. Instead, the left-hander will be examined by Mets medical director Dr. David Altchek, and right-hander Nelson Figueroa(notes) will start against the Marlins.

“I hope to have some definitive word for you tomorrow, Manuel said.

The Mets have 11 players on the disabled list, including David Wright(notes), Carlos Beltran(notes), Jose Reyes, Carlos Delgado(notes), J.J. Putz(notes) and John Maine(notes).

i'm starting to feel a bit sorry for the mets, just about every name player on that team has been injured this year, and i'm starting to think citi field is cursed.

Hopefully it is nothing serious.

I feel bad for Johan, hope he gets back soon (and by soon I mean after we win the wild card).

But the Mets really are becoming the laughing stock of the majors, 2nd highest payroll once again and not even competing. Don't use the injuries excuse, because the Mets had this same team last year when it collapsed, and the Mets practically tried to buy themselves a championship in 2006 and it didn't work. They really should start a minor rebuilding mode (keep Reyes, Wright, Santana, Beltran, every other player is expendable who isn't making near league minimum).

just in: johan santana out for the year, but will be ready for next year.

New York Mets ace Johan Santana is headed for elbow surgery and is out for the year.

The Mets said Tuesday that Santana will have arthroscopic surgery to clean up bone chips in his left elbow. The team said his expected to ready for spring training next year.

Ummm why not? I dislike the Mets, but if the Marlins had pretty much their whole entire team on the disabled list, we'd be using the same "excuse."

Look at the current Mets on the DL. It's pretty much the whole team.

Yeah if any team can use the injury excuse, it is definitely the Mets. They would obviously be a better team without so many injuries.

But the injuries ARE an excuse. You have no idea what they could have done this year if everyone was healthy for the entire season. They had a pretty good team last year, and were one game away from going to the playoffs. If they had a lineup which included Reyes, Delgado, Wright, Beltran, etc. every day with Johan as their ace, they would have been a pretty damn good team again this year.

That's basically like saying if Hanley went down and we finished with 65-70 wins we wouldn't be allowed to use that as an excuse.

Wow. Good for the Mets that he will be back next year. What an awful season for the Mets. Could you imagine how crippling Santana's injury would be if the Mets were still contenders this year? This is just a year to forget for the Mets.

wow.

sucks for santana, he really is the man.

but, it is good to see the mets suffer a bit.

F*** em

It was more enjoyable watching them suffer by losing to us, without the major list of injuries. This is their careers, you can never be happy about surgery for anyone. Every team has injuries, but this is riduculous. If it were us, we would have threads blaming the trainer.

how funny this weeks series wasnt during the weekend lol not that many ppl will show up despite everything.
