It is official. Florida Marlins owner Jeffrey Loria got the team for free. Before the 2002 season Loria, who then owned the Montreal Expos, bought the Marlins for $158 million while MLB paid $120 million to take ownership of the Expos. The Marlins price was later reduced to $143 million, as stipulated in the purchase agreement, when the Marlins did not get a new stadium within five years. But during his seven years of owning the Marlins, Loria has received more money from baseball's revenue redistribution system than the amount he paid for the team. Now that is real money ball. you would think with all this there wouldn't be so much complaining about our payroll and these guys would actually spend some money on players.

You make a ton of good points here. The only possible defense I have for Marlins' ownership is the attendance at home games. I have been at games on weekdays (and this is during the 2003 season) where I literally counted heads as the first pitch was being tossed coming up with literally 300 fans. I tend to think that if the attendance was better that the F.O. would spend more on players.

Mods, please close this thread before it turns into another shouting match between the rational people who recognize that there are expenses to running a baseball team (gosh!), and those who think it must be, like, really cheap and easy OMG

Please show me proof, and by that I mean the Marlins expenses and the actual (not online guesses) at how much they get in revenue sharing.

But during his seven years of owning the Marlins, Loria has received more money from baseball's revenue redistribution system than the amount he paid for the team.

I'm pretty sure this is true.

It still doesnt mean he has to pay to run the team.

Big woop, Monteal to florida was a wash for him. There are expenses. Staff, Players, Facilitys, Lease.

I doubt he's rolling in money like you think. 1 Million profit is chump change to owners.

j loria is a freaking mastermind and he was caught again by commissioner jimenez when jimenez said that the 155 million that the marlins are putting into the stadium is basically what their going to get for naming rights on it . so if you think about it loria has gotten a major league team and brand new ballpark without spending a single penny. I dont know whether to be angry or applaud em.

It seem more and more people have this mindset that no one should be making money. He made some good moves and has made some money. Do you really think his goal should be to make no profit and find an equilibrium? FFS.

There's nothing wrong with making money. I'll bet since the '06 season the Marlins are in the top 5 in money making and on top of that he got a new stadium that doubled or maybe tripled the value of the team so he has done a great job in the making money and wealth creation sense and should be congratulated about that.

I wish the revenue sharing rules were different but hey he's just taking advantage of dumb rules.

The new stadium is a lease that Loria has to pay off. It isn't free money.

But he was a multimillionaire before the Marlins ownership. And he's old, so i don't feel utter jealousy.
