2010 Lineup

Maybin will probably outproduce Ross in OBP next year. When constructing a lineup, you generally want higher OBP guys higher in the order, because they will make less outs.

Maybe he will and maybe he won't. After all he did whiff 29% of the time last season and that is pretty poor for a player without much power.

To me I think that your best hitters should get the most at bats, period. Regardless of speed. With that in mind you absolutely waste Ross batting him 8th. Why does Maybin all of a sudden get a ton of extra at bats when the season starts? What has he done in his major league career to warrant batting 2nd in the batting order. It doesn't matter how fast you are if you can't get on base.

Wouldn't that mean you would want to see Hanley batting first?

Certain types of players should go in certain positions.

And he lowered that to 19% in AAA and 22% in September in the majors. There is every reason to expect him to outperform Cody in on base percentage, and he is a much better base runner than him. We would be best served batting him higher in the order than Cody, since Cody's value is almost entirely derived from power, which will play up anywhere in the lineup.

Like I said before Maybin won't get to bat against expanded rosters in April-August. I hope he can handle hitting against the best of the best and hopefully you are right since they seem set at batting him #2 in the order.

You are saying expanded rosters are the reason Maybin did so well in September?

Come on. That's dumb.

Hanley had his worst month in September. Expanded rosters have nothing to do with it.

We will see in about six weeks. Maybin hit .282 in September and October for the Marlins and .202 the rest of the year. Like I said before I hope Maybin turns into the next Hanley Ramirez but I just don't see it.

He also showed dramatic improvement in key areas during his stint in AAA that indicates that what happened in September and October might not be a fluke.

If he keeps his strikeouts at around 25%, he should be fine.

What was Maybin's problem pitch? I want to say it was the slider. He just never seemed to recognize it. He also rolled over on a ton of pitches.

I don't see Maybin turning into the next Hanley Ramirez as he really won't be able to hit more the 20+ homeruns a year with his swing. If he can some miraculous way turn into a Hanley Ramirez type hitter that would be amazing to have but he's more of a Jacoby Ellsbury type hitter, plenty of singles and turning gappers that would be singles to doubles and doubles to triples and he'll steal a bunch of bases. That's the Cameron Maybin we really need he just needs to cut down on the strikeouts and get more walks.

Look, I can do it too:

Maybin hit .209 in April for the Marlins and .275 with an .803 OPS the rest of the year.

You make it sound as if "the rest of the year" in your sentence was actually a large sample size, while dismissing a slightly bigger sample size. First stint here: 95 PA; second stint: 104 PA.

I hope all of you guys are right. I doubt he will turn into another Jacoby Ellsbury though. Ellsbury hits for a high average and steals about 60 bases per season. Maybin whiffs too much to put up the kind of numbers Ellsbury does but I think he will probably have more power than him. I see Maybin being more like Mike Cameron than Ellsbury.

Mike Cameron is a better player than Jacoby Ellsbury, all things considered.

I don't know if I'm alone in this, but I would be more than happy if Cameron Maybin becomes Mike Cameron. Though I would definitely expect him to be a higher average/on base percentage guy than Cameron.

That's basically exactly what I said.

But there's every indication given his minor league numbers that Maybin could turn out to be a better player than Mike Cameron, at least offensively. (Mike) Cameron was basically the same hitter as a minor leaguer as he was in the majors. ~.250/.345/.450.

If Maybin replicates his minor league numbers, he'll be far better than Ellsbury, though I don't expect him to exactly replicate it.

I take minor league numbers with a grain of salt. There are a lot of AAAA players who put up numbers better than Maybin did in the minors.

Not usually at age 21-22.

You do understand we have to develop our players. We have Maybin for 6 more years, and Cody for 2. Maybin has star potential. Maybin is going to get better. Probably a lot better. Ross is who he is. He's not going to start walking outrageously. He's not going to jack 20 more XBH a year. He is just who he is, a nice complimentary masher. I agree with NNY, batting position is over rated, but it is there. You're going to see a few better pitches, and a few more guys on base, around Coghlan/Hanley, than around Ross/G. Sanchez. We need Maybin to become a stud. Mike Cameron would be "acceptable" as that's still an above average CF, but we need to do everything in our power to turn him into a .280/.370/.480+ monster. Because he has that potential with a little more contact which hopefully comes with age.

It's going to take some time. Probably a few years for Maybin, and Morrison, and Stanton, and Dominguez. These aren't college kids like Coghlan, Gaby, and Petersen who have had a lot of coaching and experience before getting to the minors. None of these guys are Cabrera, i.e. a top 5 bat of this generation. It's going to take time to develop these guys, and while you can't baby them and just 'reward' them batting 2nd or 4th right away, when they are ready, you don't do anything to hold them back. And batting Maybin 8th is holding him back.

And really, if Maybin stinks for 6 weeks, you're going to see him sent back to AAA to hangout and probably Petersen coming up (ross switch to CF) and trying him out. It's going to work itself out.

Ellsbury whiffs plenty, 81 BB and 169 SO's. It's not as bad as Maybins 23 BB and 80 SO's but saying Ellsbury doesn't strikeout a bench is a false statement. It would be good if Maybin turned into a Mike Cameron type player at worst but I doubt he's puts up high power numbers and a lot of less then .270 Avg season plus Cameron has a horrendous walk to k ratio but the defense, speed and power is great.

I don't know who Maybin could really be compared to but I hope he becomes a .290+ avg,.350 OBP, 15+ homeruns 40+ steal guy that plays great defense out in Center field.

Ellsbury has whiffed 169 times in 1,294 at bats in the majors. That works out to once every 7.66 at bats which isn't that bad. Cameron Maybin has whiffed 80 times in 257 major league at bats. That is good for a whiff every 3.21 at bats. Not even close.

True but it's a small sample size, we'll see by the end of the season, lets hope for drastic improvement.

I think you're taking too much stock in the major league numbers of a 22 year old, especially when it's less than half a season over 3 years.

I hope Maybin turns into a star because he was the main piece in trading the best hitter in team history. That trade has looked awful the first two years as Badenhop has been the most productive player the Marlins got back for Cabrera.

They are gonna ride Maybin 'till the wheels come off this season for good or ill, they have to determine what exactly they have in him, so I expect him to get as much playing time as possible, even if he stinks. They might as well, this team isn't ready to contend yet.
