oh okay. i haven't had the chance to watch any of the spring training games. so how have mcclung, veras, and macdougal looked??

I dont see how Hensley doesnt make this team

Hensley would make it as a starter.

Hensley would make it as a starter.

I agree. But it also wouldn't be a bad thing to have him in long relief with spot starts.

Hensley isn't a lock to make the team. Some people should probably stop thinking that. You might end up disappointed.

I don't remember which veteran pitchers we signed to minor league deals have opt-outs before Opening Day but there are a few that I hope we either make new deals with or add to the 25 man roster at the beginning of the season to (in effect) continue their tryouts. We can't take everyone with us when we leave Jupiter but if we can get a few good innings out of the Stricklands and Veras', McClungs and MacDougals (assuming none of them implode between now and the end of spring training) I'm generally in favor of bringing veterans with us to New York and through the end of April as their work justifies.

I'm totally baffled what to do with Pinto, finding him a new home might resolve that thorn in the team's side, but what's he really worth to anyone else? I have no idea.

I also think as problematic as it is you may see either four starters and an extra bullpen arm or thirteen arms total, I'm not sure which but April is going to be driven by who we want to keep as much as who pitched the best in March.

I'm just kind of shocked that article already stated that Jose Veras had an "inside edge." I don't see why. (comparing him to the other minor league signings, and what they've done in Spring Training)

I was surprised at what Fredi said which was they "...might give him a start next week, maybe a B game." I would think as an outsider they would give him the toughest possible start coming up without interfering too much with the schedules of Johnson, Nolasco and Sanchez, and for all intents and purposes throw him to the wolves to see exactly what he has. By next week most teams will be playing their regs and it would be a good test to see how he responds both mentally and on the mound.

Why isn't he a lock though? Because he has options and the others (Penn, etc, etc) dont? His performance has be more than enough to make it, especially if you are comparing it Veras

Yes, that always plays a part, whether fans like it or not. Also the fact that Spring Training stats don't mean as much as some people think. It's a small sample size, therefore everything tends to be evaluated, not just stats. Hence the reason why there's still a battle at 1B, as well, and Gaby Sanchez hasn't been declared a winner yet.

veras looked good today....he has good stuff and seems to have regained his control.....i have no problem with him making the team.

i think either mcclung or mcdougal make it and i would have to say mcclung. he has much better control than mcdougal and i think would be more reliable. had that one terrible inning but otherwise has been good.

I suppose the inside edge comes from the major league resume he has relative to the other relievers in camp. Even with that resume, I am not a big fan of Veras. He has way too many moving parts in his pitching motion for my liking.

so who gets the last spot in the bullpen??? hensley or mcclung

so who gets the last spot in the bullpen??? hensley or mcclung

I hope they're seriously looking at Scott Strickland too, and not just saying that. He's done well, and he's had a good career, even if he hasn't done it in awhile. He's an interesting option, imo.

Manny Navarro wrote an article that said so much yesterday.

Scott Strickland becomes strong contender for Florida Marlins' bullpen spot.
