Posted April 8, 201015 yr I question this. Seeing the way Maybin reacts to flyballs, it seems many times he is getting terrible reads on the balls that make me wonder if he needs to get his eyes checked. It isn't like Maybin just started playing centerfield yesterday, but sometimes it seems like it.
April 9, 201015 yr Author No. He also doesn't need braces anymore. Snarky comments aside, the way Maybin has been completely misjudging the distance on some balls hit this season (mainly pop flys that he played off the bat like deep flys) - the Barajas pop fly tonight and a couple on Opening Day come to mind - I wouldn't be surprised if Maybin has some type of myopia.
April 9, 201015 yr It'd be awfully hard to hit major league pitching if you had a serious eye problem.
April 9, 201015 yr Yeah I think we all knew this would devolve into a Ricky Vaughn thread. And no... Cam doesnt need glasses, misjudging the ball doesnt mean you cant see it. If he needed glasses, someone would have picked that up years ago. Now that I think about it... was this a serious question?

It isn't like Maybin just started playing centerfield yesterday, but sometimes it seems like it. I actually asked myself this during Thursday's game. The answer would be no. He's taking a step or two back and then circling, but I think he's more reacting to the swing rather than the ball. Once he gets a read on the ball he's fine. If he is comfortable going back on balls then I would think he needs to play in a little bit more. He has the speed to get back to the wall, but he needs to be comfortable doing it. But playing where he is, if he just stands still until he gets a read he will be fine. He's still learning the finer points of defense.
April 9, 201015 yr Did Tommy or Rich not say all 3 of the balls that dropped short were from Barajas? Maybe its just a case of playing some players totally wrong

April 9, 201015 yr Talk about overreaction. Maybin plays good defense and I think he'll continue to get better. His offense is also much improved.
April 9, 201015 yr I think it's amusing threads like this start, when there is a much bigger outfield problem in left field.
