the world cup is the world's greatest sporting event. it's starting on june 11 and i was hoping we could use this thread to discuss the games. also i have made a group on espn soccernet bracket predictions. if anyone wants to join and make predictions the group is called "world cup 2010 can't wait" and the password is "altidore".

http://soccernet.espn.go.com/world-cup/fixtures?cc=5901&ver=us

That link has the fixtures, the times of the games (in EST) and what channel will be showing it.

I feel the tournament is mildly open, I would say that if I had to put my money on anyone... it would be Spain, but they need Torres to be fit to be at their best. I think he'll be ready.

June 12th - England vs. USA - 2:30pm on a Saturday afternoon.

I'm English, but I've lived in the USA for 6 years now.... this is the big game for me.

I'm going to be at the Bonnaroo music festival during the USA-England game, but they are devoting a stage to showing the game on TV. I expect a large contingent of rooters for both side, it should be a ton of fun. Can't imagine a better way to watch the game.

I think Spain look awfully good with the likes of Fabregas, Xavi, Iniesta, Torres and Villa etc. Hopefully I will be watching most of the games as it works well here with the time difference between the UK and South Africa being only 1 hour. However I will miss the final as that weekend I'm at the major music festival in Scotand that I always go to and I don;t think they are providing big screens, probably in the event that England made the final and won, then there would probably be riots here haha.

i've been thinking about june 11 for at least 2 months now. and now we're only like 3 weeks away. i like spain alot but i like brazil's chances too. and my darkhorse is serbia because they've had a great defense for years and now they've finally integrated some good offensive players.

Maybe being at the game instead of being surrounded by dirty smelly hippies?

Predictions for tournament winner and top scorer?

I'm gonna say Argentina and Higuain with 2nd picks being Brazil and Luis Fabiano

Spain have an awesome team however it is rare that a team wins 2 major International championships in a row (Euro 2008)

I'd have to really look at the possible routes to the final because that can have such a factor in who makes it.

I'd have to think Spain, but I think it's more open then that.

South Africa 1 Mexico 1

Decent game, but kinda sloppy in the first half. Second half was much better and South Africa could've won it if not for that scuffed shot in the 89th minute. Of course... there was that early Mexico disallowed goal that could've made the game turn out much different. Fair result really.

Match Rating: 6/10

Uruguay 0 France 0

The South American team just killed this game from the start. They had 5 at the back with 2 holding midfielders playing just in front. They wanted the draw and they got the draw, but they sent me to a short snooze for 20 minutes in the second half. I didn't even see when Terry Henry (that's right, that's his non-puffed up name) came on. It's like people have said, teams are scared of losing their first game because it leaves them with everything to do. Getting a draw and then beating the easier teams in your group gives you a better chance of getting through to the knockout stages. It's a real shame for us impartial viewers though because it leads to snoozefest games.

God that France match sucked. I only caught the last 25 mins of the opening game as I was working so was looking forward to the 2nd match and was extremely disappointed. Only match I can watch tomorrow is the Argentina-Nigeria game. Will miss the big game at night between the US and England unfortunately.

Come on you Yanks!!! Beat the English pleeeeeeease

The second match was just horrible. My expectations of France are pretty low anyways, but that game was just tough on the eyes. Second and third games tomorrow are pretty good matchups, but it's gonna be tough to wake up to watch Greece SKorea.

Yeah, I'm not getting up at 7am to watch... South Korea vs. Greece, no chance.

Argentina vs. Nigeria could be entertaining, but I've got some food shopping to do. Gotta get a cold cut sub, some Doritos and beer for the England-USA game.

Stop hating on the English, Schnellders, who was the last player to score for Scotland in the world cup? Ally McCoist, Kenny Daglish... William Wallace?

Craig Burley against Norway in '98

And I'm quite entitled to support whoever plays England. That's the way things are here

I know how it works, we hate France, Germany, Argentina... you hate England. Shouldn't be that way in my opinion though when we're all British, but it is what it is.

Really looking forward to USA - England

Really looking forward to getting drunk in the middle of the day for a soccer game...Gotta love the world cup.
