July 21, 201016 yr http://sports.espn.go.com/chicago/mlb/news/story?id=5398820 CHICAGO -- Former Florida Marlins manager Fredi Gonzalez will be one of the candidates interviewed for the Chicago Cubs managerial job, according to a major league source. Gonzalez, who was fired by the Marlins on June 24, has a long personal and professional relationship with Cubs general manager Jim Hendry stemming from the time they worked together with the Marlins. Gonzalez, who has interviewed with the Cubs in the past, is the consensus top choice to replace Bobby Cox as manager of the Atlanta Braves, according to multiple baseball sources. The Marlins were 34-36, 6 1/2 games behind the Braves in the NL East when Gonzalez was fired. Florida owner Jeffrey Loria, who declared his playoffs-or-bust expectations for his team in spring training, said he had decided to change managers after 70 games, saying "we can do better and be better." Gonzalez, 46, had a 275-279 record in four seasons as Marlins manager. Hendry said Hall of Famer and Triple-A Iowa manager Ryne Sandberg will also be considered for the Cubs job. He is the only other known candidate at this point. ESPNChicago.com's Bruce Levine contributed to this report.
July 21, 201016 yr No point in interviewing Fredi. He's already made his mark within the Braves organization and is just waiting for Cox to get out of the way to take his dream job.
July 21, 201016 yr ...like the cubs don't have enough problems. I think it's a done deal in Atlanta. I went to 2 of the 3 games when the fish were up here, talked to a Braves fan....he's excited about Fredi. I filled him in a little. He wasn't nearly as excited after talking to me. If he brought somebody with him to manage the bullpen, he'd be ok, i think.
July 21, 201016 yr Everyone, their mothers, and their mothers' mothers know Fredi is going to Atlanta.
July 22, 201016 yr I'd be shocked to see Sandberg not get the job.... Fredi is going to Atlanta. I don't think anyone doubts that. But Sandberg may be better off being a bench coach first. Even Hawk mentioned that last night. The Cubs need to win NOW. Payroll, decades of disappointments, etc... Would they be comfortable handing over the reigns to a rookie manager? I'm just not so sure about that. But then, it is the Cubs. Nothing would surprise me.
July 22, 201016 yr I'm sure this is more of a move to avoid the penalty for not interviewing minority candidates.
July 22, 201016 yr Maybe for some wacky reason they will hire Bo Porter and save us the stress in the offseason of worrying about whether he will manage the Marlins, as was previously rumoured......
