flasportsfan88
Just how good is the defense. If this guys has solid D and keeps getting on base I have a feeling we can see this guy at 2nd base in the future.
Entendu
Someone on these boards said that he projects to be an Amezaga type. I don't know if this is true, but I'm just throwing it out there.
fanofthefish
Let's give him a "Shot", sorry couldn't help myself. Actually I'm pretty sure the future of 2b is going to be Uggla and then Coghlan and some how in the back of my mind I see the FO giving Bonifacio a shot there too. Martinez looks to be a solid player for the future maybe they can use him to get some bullpen help this off season.
MrMarlinPride
He's solid defensively but this is only his 1st good season in the minors. I see him as if anything a solid backup infielder.
flasportsfan88
If Morrison and Stanton pan out, we have enough offense to go along with Coghlan and Sanchez. We need better defense up the middle. I'll take a sub 800 OPS'er if he's a glovesmith. San Diego, and St Louis proved you can win with pitching defensive, and a big bat. But just how good is Martinez's glove?
mystikol87
This year, at least, he just keeps on hitting. He's been better since the All-Star break, so it doesn't even seem like he's come back to Earth just because he no longer has Stanton's protection in the line-up. We know who's playing SS and Uggla looks like he'll be here for at least 2 more years. Coghlan would man 2B when Uggla leaves, Gaby/LoMo at 1st and Dominguez at 3rd. He really has no future as a starter on this team just a hopefully solid backup.
flasportsfan88
If he can play SS I'm sure he can handle second. And I don't know if I'm totally sold on Uggla getting signed long term here. From what I remember Coghlan was not exactly a major league second baseman his last season in the minors before getting called up. And I think it's fair to say that I'm not sold on Dominguez. (Assuming we don't sign Uggla) With the bats we have up I think we should maybe think about having a defensive wiz up the middle especially since Hanley ins't an above average shortstop. Rabbethan
I have no idea where Ozzie would play. Trade bait maybe. Also, bullets are obviously performance enhancing drugs.

Well if Uggla gets signed long term I'd expect Osvaldo to be trade bait or a backup. The thought of Martinez playing 2nd stems from my skepticism of the Marlins ability/intentions to resign Uggla. dim
This is Martinez's first year of decent production in the minors, so right now he should be looked at as a utility man in the majors at best long term. He's still nowhere near ready for the majors, and should probably just get a call up to AAA next year.
flasportsfan88
It might be worth it to note that Martinez seems to of changed his hitting approach since 2008. in 08 he was very undisciplined, 4% BB and 14% K. The last two seasons hes been at 8.5%BB/10.5%K last season and 9.2BB%/10k%. It's one thing if the scouts just project him as a utility guy after years of watching him. But to say he has not shot at the majors because of his earlier years in the minors seems moot, considering he's a different hitter now than he was in 2008 and previous.
