Preach on!

What is that, 3 years of A-Rod?

Maybe?

Yes, it's 3 years of a contract that helped bankrupt the Texas Rangers. Yapoint?

RFerry since u think what i said is ridiculous, let me ask you if what you guys are saying is true on here (and i think it could be) why arent the marlins defending themselves using this defense? Itd be very simple for a guy like samson to point out the debt figure and say while they were making money the last few years, they were still in the red 61 million. They havent said that. Why not? If they said that, Id be inclined to believe them. They just arent making a very convincing argument. Im not trying to find fault in them, but im wondering why they arent making as a good of a case as everyone on here is.

And the Marlins dont have a poor media deal. They have one of the better ones in baseball where they are shown throughout the 4th largest state (and southern Georgia) with several expensive media markets.

If what you guys are saying is true and the debt was not carried over from the Expos, then David Samson needs to get out of the spotlight or take a PR lesson. They are taking a beating on this from the media (local and national) as well as a large segment of their fanbase. The last thing they need is for Samson to throw one of his little hissy fits railing about the guy who leaked the report. The media and the fanbase dont care who that guy is. They care about whats in the report. Trying to deflect attention to that guy gives the impression the marlins are deeply unhappy and embarassed about the reports (which feeds into what the media says) and feeds the perception that they did something wrong. if you what you guys say is true, that they arent making money and lost tons of money the years before, then they need to point that out (and release the documents for the other years) because at this point everything is making them look bad. If they care about public relations (and they should as any good business does) then they need to be out there being proactive and not going on some witch hunt for some intern making $30,000 a year.

David Samson is making that argument right now on 790 the Ticket. He claims they lost a lot of money in the original plan when they were planning to build a stadium next to the Orange Bowl.

As far as their media deal:

Club	TV and Radio	Year

Marlins	$16,716,000	2009

Marlins	$15,900,000	2008

Pirates	$39,007,164	2008

Pirates	$40,326,222	2007

Rays	$13,444,475	2008

Rays	$12,885,996	2007

Mariner	$64,365,000	2008

Mariner	$60,182,000	2007

Angels	$45,998,000	2009

Angels	$42,967,000	2008

Well then its about time he did. Every time Ive listened to him hes just started in about the guy who leaked the reports.

And I was under the impression they made upwards of 25 million (from threads on here). How do them and Tampa Bay have such terrible media deals? This is a large state and an expensive advertising market.

Rabb, I think you will agree with me on what I write below because so many people on this forum and elsewhere don’t want to listen to any of us. They want to believe something was done wrong, something was done badly, it was done illegally, someone was hiding something. I don’t know if the problem is by tearing down others it makes them feel better; I give up in trying to figure it out.

Newest is the Yahoo article in which this “writer, Jeff Passan, states that if the city/county hadn’t given the $ to the Marlins for the new stadium, there would be money for education and 1,200 jobs. Well, this discussion went around like 2 years ago at least, where even the city/county commissioners stated this was WRONG. The HOTEL/MOTEL bed taxes/tourist dollars DOES NOT GO TO EDUCATION AND/OR JOBS. And the “writer, Jeff Passan, doesn’t even mention how many jobs this new MARLINS stadium has created!! But in a different way than Jeff is mentioning. And yet THAT HAS HAPPENED!!! Jobs in construction, mind you, which the industry is reeling from the recession in South Florida.

Then the “writer like many others keeps talking about “operating Income ignoring interest expense. Has this “writer found a means to borrow money at zero interest? And this “writer didn’t bother to mention that a “related party, most likely a partner, loaned in at least $14.1M to the partnership (on page 1 shown as promissory note) and the partnership has only $3.4M in cash to spend. If they made so much money why is the cash less than the loan? Nor for that matter no other writer writing articles/blogs on the terrible Loria/Samson/owners mentioned this which blows my mind. They can’t even mention something good the partnership has done. Does this “writer know a way for people to loan money to him and not be expected to pay it back? Wow, would I like to find that out!!

I don’t know what it truly takes to wake up these people and get them to “smell the coffee instead of smelling the sewer being spilled in the media. I would think people would get tired of it. We have known in the past not to listen to media in so many instances and yet people keep going back and thinking the next article is true. How much money did Carol Burnett get from the scandal in the National Enquirer? What about Thomas Dewey elected US President instead of Harry Truman? What about Gordon Lightfoot’s death supposedly occurring in February 2010? What about that Lindsay Lohan had HIV along with having an affair with Tommy Mottola at age 17 and reported by her father? I believe Carol Burnett was also reported dead and there have been others who have issued press releases about their “demise. And I’m certain there are many others you could mention.

Myself I’m not pro-Loria or pro-Samson. I’m PrO-MARLINS. I still do not agree with many things like letting Ross go or trading Miguel (although I now understand) and probably won’t in the future; I’m a fan. But then I don’t see the BIG PICTURE inside the organization nor all the long-term plans. The financials proved to me the organization is NOT make huge amount of money (percentage wise), and I can’t expect them to go in debt (actually more in debt) just because I would like to see a Yankees caliber team in South Florida. Maybe it will happen one day IF the fans SUPPORT them at the NEW stadium and not sitting in their house or a bar with their buddies.

I guess, like you, I’ll have to continue to respond to this dribble printed or spoken in the media.

How many times have you listened to him? As far as I know this is only the second time he's responded to this issue.

That's the sad part. You mentioned that now you understand why we traded Miggie. These financial statements actually PROVE that the Marlins were telling the truth! I've always given them the benefit of the doubt, which really I give everyone on the planet as it's just my way, but finally these things come out and I know that I can trust the Marlins. If the financials had come out and shown that the Marlins have always been huge earners and were not in debt, then I'd be on the side of the furious. I want what's best for the team, I really couldn't care less if Loria or Samson make out rich or poor.

What's sad is that with everyone blaming the "mainstream media"; I always ignored that. I always gave the media the benefit of the doubt. And I've now seen that they've completely abused that power. I'm actually very distraught to see what's going on. I've lost all faith in the media.

hes been on the radio twice and hes given several statements to the print and television media.

my issue isnt so much the financials but how theyve handled it public relationswise. they should really find someone other than samson to be the face and voice of the FO. he doesnt come off very well and people tend not to like him. id venture to say most people on the board dont like him.

Yeah, he's rather unlikeable.

Though as far as I could tell he only gave one statement to the media that they all carried, but I haven't seen a full statement so for all I know he did make that argument and they just ignored that part.

I agree at times Samson has diahrrea of the mouth and at times some people have a distorted view of the Marlins because how they feel about Samson and/or Loria. But Samson did an AWESOME JOB when he was presenting to the city/county commissioners for the new stadium. I sure didn't think he had that much passion, intelligence, PR ability until the presentations he made during that period. The saying goes you can't "throw the baby out with the bath water". Yes, we want everything perfect in all aspects, but that isn't life. Samson may have some truly awesome traits in other aspects of his job that we don't know about.

We fans are the quickest to put people/players on the pedestal that no one can reach and we the fans pull them off the fastest for "just because". That's true of management. How many people think they can do a better job of managing their boss' job, what politicians do, what police do, what sport clubs do?

And how much would we understand "long-term plans of sport teams and the idiosyncrasies of the financials and working with unions, agents, the MLB/NHL/NBA/NFL/etc.? Some time we just have to stop and trust.

Personally I got to view something I never thought I would see. Personally I'm satisfied and that's all that is important to me.

yeah cuz hes the face of the FO and hes pretty much disliked universally by the fans of the team lol.

im not saying its fair at all but perception is reality and the media is the way most fans draw perception of the team and the especially FO. its already bad enough that MLB came out at the beggining of the year and told them to spend money, and now reports show a profit the last couple of years. at this point its damage control and samson has a tendency to make the FO look worse simply because hes unlikeable and doesnt know the first thing about PR or damage control.

they may as well come out with the financials of the previous years as well if they lost money. itd be a decent way to save face at this point.

Honestly, I think them claiming that they were only trying to erase debt would do nothing for them in the media. People are going to believe what they want to believe, no matter what. It's wholly evident here on this thread alone, there a quite a few people here who believe that Loria/Sampson/Whoever the hell is in charge was simply pocketing money, choosing to either ignore or dismiss the $61 Million debt. The owners could have said they were funding a orphaned children's hospital with the profit money and the media would still be demolishing the marlins with the same fervor as they are right now.

Sh*t like this that makes it difficult to get more fans, and now it's going to turn away people from this franchise who choose to believe what the media says as the gospel. The media enjoys controversy, we all know this, and it's slowly choking off our less educated fans. I assume most of you use facebook, and you've see some of the completely brainless things people can say on there. They're going to eat this up, call foul, and possibly choose to move away from the team, which then correlates with lower stadium attendance, which further correlates with more poor national perception, continuing in an endless cycle of negativity and PR damage. :mad

Alex, I don’t think it matters what they do or don’t do. The Jeff Passan’s of this world will read and say whatever they want to say because it will sell “papers—you know what I mean. The Jeff Passan’s will still say the money could have been used for EDUCATION!!

The Marlins are a private partnership; it is designed/created for just the (1) owners/partners, and whoever they want to see it such as (2) creditors/banks, and (3) MLB to look at it. It isn’t publicly traded like Ford, Chevron, or Polaroid where we can get a copy for just the heck of it to view. Like would you like your personal tax return printed in the newspaper just because you asked for a tax abatement on your house? I think this would be a similar experience to what the partners, and their spokesman, Samson, are feeling.

I’m just glad I’m not in their shoes over all of this. And I bet we aren’t the only sports team who has national coverage they don’t like. We just happen to be the closest to this one.

Here is a good map of the various TV territories that each team claims. Seattle covers a huge market in terms of size as there is no other teams up there hence why they were quoted as earning around $60m in revenue. On the other end of the scale, you can see how the area is much smaller for both the Marlins and Rays and this results in the smaller ($12-15m) revenue.
