November 25, 201015 yr Not the first minor deal made by the Marlins this offseason, but this Garate guy seems interesting. Don't know his splits, but looking at his minor league #'s, he's a 26 year old left-handed pitcher with a career 11.5 K/9 (11.9 in 2010) & 2.65 K/BB (2.27 in 2010). Based on his velocity #'s in his short time in the big leagues, it doesn't seem like he should be striking out that many people. He could just be a case of a minor league pitcher who can only pitch in the minor leagues, but his K/9 + the fact that he's lefty makes him seem like interesting depth. Thoughts?
November 26, 201015 yr here's a bit from Nats GM Mike Rizzo when they last acquired him: "We see a guy who's a versatile pitcher. He can be a set-up type of guy. He gets right-handers and left-handers out the same. He's got good stuff with good command and a funky delivery that fools some hitters. He's kind of between a three-quarters and a low three-quarters (arm) slot, so he's really tough on left-handers. The league is hitting .191 against him, and he's shown a propensity to throw all his pitches for strikes at any given time. He's not a soft-tosser. He throws up to 91-91, and he's got a good sweeping breaking ball and change-up." Here's a longer review of him from a Dodgers site when he was a prospect there: link Looks like in AA they switched him from starter to reliever and he posted decent stats in both AA and AAA, although a little old for the competition I guess. Certainly seems to be worth a shot though. funky deliveries are always fun. Sort of Brian Fuentes-like. I'm sure he'll be AAA depth at first.
November 27, 201015 yr The Royals also outrighted Gaby Hernandez on the same day as Marte, anyone still interested in him?
