I thought Gaby Sanchez was a third baseman. Even with mediocre skills at the position, I would put him at third and Morrison at first. The added offense Sanchez would provide at third base means more to me than any defense that Dominguez or Bonafacio or whoever could provide. Some production at third is especially important with all the weak sticks in the Marlins lineup this season like Infante, Coghlan and Morrison. Moving Morrison to first would also open up left field for a good bat ... if the Marlins could find one.

Infante is a "weak stick"? He hit .321 which led all qualified 2Bs and OBPed .359 which was 6th amongst qualified 2Bs last year.

The problem is Gaby Sanchez would not be mediocre at the position, he would be horrendous and probably have something like a negative 15-20 UZR. Dominguez, by all accounts, will have a positive 10-15 UZR (or better) as an absolutely dominant infield defender. A rough estimation is 10 runs per 40 points of OPS. So, Dominguez is plus 25-30 runs than Gaby Sanchez just based on defense. If Gaby Sanchez hits an .800 OPS, Dominguez has to hit around a .680-.700 to match his overall production. You can do the math if Gaby Sanchez hits .775. This is why Matt Dominguez is not as bad of an idea as people think it is. He's a solid regular at .700. He's above average at .750. He's a star at .800. Anything above a .650 OPS is probably acceptable for him if he brings his glove for right now. Longterm, he's going to need to get to the low .700 OPS range. I fear for him, as if Dominguez can hit as well as Hermida (I use "well" liberally), he is a very good player for this franchise based on his position.

And weak sticks? Morrison had a .390 OBP as a rookie, and Coghlan will presumably improve after his soph. slump.

By weak sticks, I am referring to a lack of power. And while Dominguez has a flashy glove, he is still making lots of errors. Over the course of a season, Sanchez could easily produce 40 or more rbi's at the plate than Dominguez IMO. To each his own.

I always convince myself eating those will be okay this time and not make my stomach hate me, and every time, I'm wrong. It's like Midwestern White Castle.

I know we go over this about 100 times every year, but please realize one day errors are not an indication of defensive prowess as they are highly subjective to different scorekeepers at every stadium and don't account for range which is drastically more important, and RBIs are a huge reflection of lineup positioning and are nearly completely dependent on other player's batting in front of a hitter at a certain point in the lineup. A better example would be not Gaby Sanchez's RBIs compared to Dominguez, but whoever the Marlins could obtain to play LF in your scenario, and how much more offense they could create in Dominguez spot in the lineup, to warrant a massive defensive downgrade at 3B (coupled with any defensive advantage gained by moving Morrison as well). Chances are, you come out at a negative unless you can find a guy who can really hit, which is why the Marlins are smartly penciling in their best possible lineup entering spring training, which has Matt Dominguez at 3B. I'm not saying he is going to be good, I'm just saying, he is the best option compared to Father Helms, Bonifacio, and Dobbs.
