The Rays offseason wasn't all that terrible, either. They really only lost Carl Crawford, and they'll have Desmond Jennings coming up who has potential to do some things. The additions of Damon and Manny (while they're not the same caliber of players) really solidify the lineup. The rotation is fine even without Garza, who I thought was pretty overrated, anyway. I really think Hellickson is an upgrade.

 

They lost a lot of guys in the pen, but bullpens are unpredictable. Even if the Rays weren't a small market team, they probably wouldn't have given Benoit and Balfour the 3 year deals they got, anyway. Not worth it. Soriano has been consistent throughout his career, but whatever. Even though he's really good, 3 years/12 million is a lot for a reliever (only the Yankees and Red Sox could afford to do such a thing). The Rays have shown a great job recently in acquiring relievers out of nowhere and having success with them (like Benoit and Balfour).

 

The AL East is going to be fun to watch next year. I really don't think there's a "bad" team in that division.

The only good that came from this offseason is they got rid of Minaya and actually hired some competent people in the front office.

As for the Mets, on the one hand it's hard to really criticize their approach considering the financial situation and guys coming off the payroll after the season. I thought Young and Capuano were decent low-risk gambles to take, as well.

 

Still, sitting on your laurels and basically saying, "Welp, our hands are tied!" a couple years after moving into an expensive new ballpark cannot sit well with that fanbase. If the Mets aren't going to try and improve, why not move some of these guys? K-Rod is in the last year of his deal and could fetch a decent prospect. Beltran is also in his last year and could be moved if the Mets pick up a majority of the tab or take on payroll. And what about David Wright? His strikeouts keep going up and his defense is in decline. He's still a good player but there are warning signs, and I doubt the Mets pick up their option on him after '12 anyway. Of course, maybe they've tried and failed (and there were reports about Beltran to Boston before they signed Crawford). But if I were a Mets fan I'd be pissed that the new front office seems to be content with everyone picking up paychecks and waiting until next year.

actually i think missing out on lee could have been the best thing to happen to texas. the financial hit he would have made on their payroll could have hindered their team in the long term picture. as for the yankees they always have money to spend
