Marlins Mentioned In Diamond Notes

Marlins GM Admin Beinfest hasn't yet been given his final budget, but he assures anyone and everyone that he is keeping that pitching together, and teams that think they're going to steal A.J. Burnett because he's arbitration eligible and unlikely to pitch until June probably had better look elsewhere. Derrek Lee clearly is going to be traded, with the Orioles standing at the head of the line, with the D-Backs, Giants and others involved. The Phish want to try to get Luis Castillo re-signed, then determine whether or not they can keep Mike Lowell, which is unlikely. After getting Scott Boras' first request for Ivan Rodriguez, the Marlins seem to be inclined to turn the page. We'll see where the market goes on that one.

He keeps on with that Lowell BS...

keeping Lowell seems unlikely?

Gammons is officially a retard

and why are we called the Phish? fackin idiot

The Philadelphia NL franchise is called the Phillies...

...the Florida NL franchise is called the Fish.

Unlike those educated by the Northeast Public School Systems, those of us educated here in Florida can spell.*

*Some products of the Dade County School System are defective, but very few compared to Northeast rates.

thats what i was wondering....that makes us sound like a philly fish combo...

fackin idiot

Several times I've mentioned that it appeared during the season a bond was developing between AJ and the team after their estrangement. Good to see it's mutual. I hope waiting for AJ isn't like waiting for Godot, but the mind boggles at a rotation of Burnett, Beckett, Penny, Pavano and Willis. Be still my heart !

Redman is so gone. The Marlins aren't about to pay BOTH AJ and Redman $3 mil next year. Isn't going to happen. Can't happen.

As for Castillo, sometimes I think it's a ruse, this whole Castillo #1 priority thing. Either they are trying to wear him down and lowball him, or they want to pretend to not need (and that's the important word, "need") a 2b man so that they can drive deals for Lee and Redman towards other needs. To me it's Lee, Enc and Luis and that's 85% of the cut you need to make.

And you could still sign Pudge for $8.5 mil a year for three years.

Lowell will be kept, but that seems like the only thing Gammons has wrong.

Everything else is basically correct, but nothing we didn't already know.

So we're most likely trading DLee ??? :confused Sorry, I'm a little slow when it comes to these things. I knew there was trade rumors but I didn't know it was that serious.

whether or not they can keep Mike Lowell, which is unlikely.

Wasn't this the same guy that every day for two months leading to the trade deadline kept insisting that Lowell would be gone any day now (or any minute as the deadline approached?)

He really has a fixation with Lowell leaving the Phfisch (spell it any way you want ;) )

They are serious, but whether or not he is traded to Baltimore is yet to be seen. I know the money is big, but don't deal him unless the offer is sweet.

I find it doubtful that Castillo, Lowell or Rodriguez will be allowed to lead for PR reasons.

I expect Encarnacion, Lee and Redman to be gone for cost reasons.

Phish - because Gammons likes the band, or at least is alluding to the band's name. I hate f'in hippies - especially fake ones...

Gammons DID get it all right, except for Lowell. There seemed to be this obsession with ESPN writers that Burnett was going to be let go by us. Ridiculous - we won the damn World Series and STILL no one gives us the credit for having a good organization with the right talent evaluators in place...amazing...

Lowell will be back with a multi year deal. Again, like AJ, it is ridiculous to suggest that this team will fail in keeping a valuable member put. Besides, we got all this year to work out a deal - who knows what happens even if we dont get a deal done now. Lowell wants to stay, and is apparently willing to take a pay cut to stay home with the World Champs - which will get plenty of opportunities so long as this pitching staff is kept together. And it will be...

I agree Marlins2003 that the Castillo thing is suspicious. I just cant get my mind around Castillo's hip - I know it has to be a concern for the FO. Why they are trying to re-sign Castillo may have more to do with PR than anything. If he leaves, at least we tried. I think Luis could be gone.

That leaves Lee, Redman, Castillo, Pudge and Enc all gone. They will be replaced by Conine, Burnett (spot starter til he is ready), FA/trade/minor leaguer, Castro (if innocent) and FA/trade/MiL'er. Our whole right side will be new, but there is plenty of talent available for us to re-load. I still cant dismiss this feeling that Vlad will be here...

At this stage of the game, I find this statement troubling. I'm glad about AJ Burnette staying. We should sign him long term with team options, just in case he doesn't recover well.

Translation: "We here at ESPN.com don't have the final budget numbers for the Marlins, so instead of saying we don't know, we'll act like they don't have one yet."
