Even "the greatest rotation ever" has Blanton/Kendrick/Worley filling out the five spot and getting blasted.

And our #4 (Sanchez - at least coming into the season) has better numbers than their #2 (Lee)

:D

i'm sure there is a cheap(ish) veteran out there who would be available via trade that could post a 4.5-5 era and give us a better chance that volstad. if i remember his peripheral stats didn't really support having a sub 3 era when he came up which means it was mostly the result of being lucky as opposed to ricky who seems perpetually cursed with great peripherals but poor era's. volstad SHOULD be a groundball type of pitcher especially being as tall as he is but he typically elevates and is more of a flyball kinda guy. i'm sure he would actually be a semi-attractive piece in a trade though considering he's a young starter. I would hope the marlins wise up enough to jettison him while he still has some trade value (mostly in that he's young).

It's kinda hard to see how this would work. If we don't consider Volstad himself to be at least a #5 pitcher capable of 4.5 or 5 e.r.a, why would another team think he's worth trading anyone good for? And who would that cheapish veteran be that's available and better than Volstad?

According to Fangraphs Volstad FIP is 4.44 and his xFIP is 3.70 so he is very unlucky to have a 5.91 ERA right now. He is a strong ground ball pitcher but his mistakes are hit. He is not a sub 3 ERA guy but is a 4.25-4.50 ERA pitcher now and will get better as he gets experience.

He's not a strong groundball pitcher, but yeah he hasn't been fortunate with the ERA this year. I do think his stuff has looked better his last four starts, for what it's worth.

He's not a strong groundball pitcher, but he's squarely above average, and he has the best K/BB ratio of his career so far. Strikes me as a lot of bad luck for him right now.

Sure, eh?

i do find it amusing that so many of us (myself included) are chalking up a lot of our struggling players to simply bad luck....so what should our record really be then? :)
