2011 Hurricane Season

Featured Replies

While obviously earlier I was joking that here we would golf in such strong winds, I just checked hurricane classifications and noticed that Category 1 winds are deemed to start at 74mph. I have golfed in about 50-60mph gusts before, so wasnt that far off.....

A storm's gusting, spinning wind is much different than a regular 50-60 mph wind. Don't get me wrong, that's really strong, but you couldn't golf in a Cat 1 storm.

The reason why Irene is going to drop power quickly is that once you get above 30n, wind shear is going to increase dramatically, and once you get to about Deleware (perhaps NJ depending on weather) the water temp is going down to 60-something quickly. The storm will bleed energy rather than build. It is a well organized storm, so I figure high cat 1 (perhaps barely cat 2) is possible, but not likely when it reaches Long Island / Rhode Island and it could probably remain a named storm well into upper New England (39+ MPH).

Considering that region's lack of experience with hurricanes, the strength won't make much difference. Its gonna be really bad for them.

My prayers go out to those who will be hit by Irene. I hope that it will not cause much damage and no one will get hurt. Good luck to everyone it will hit.

Rubble? My friend, we live in Florida. 'Rubble' from an average storm constitutes peoples screens falling down.

We're talking about a Cat 2, potentially Cat 3. Tis not the end of the world. We're not praying on damage. You can have a storm without destroying half of the state.

I love storms too but once you own a home it gets scarier. Plus it hurts business for weeks. Fwiw i dont put the shutters up unless its a strong cat 1 or 2.

New England would get messed up if this storm hits as a cat 3. They aren't ready for it.

At least you have shutters. We still can't afford to get them. A hurricane hitting us is like in that old story about the Big Bad Wolf and the straw house...

NC is going to take the brunt, there will be lots of power outtages and such north of there. I would expect that DC-Balt-Philly are going to have the worst of it since I would expect that they are completely unprepared for this kind of thing. New England at least deals with gales. Also, if it goes up the middle track, it will be a lot weaker for NYC and north.

How rare is that? Poor Admin.

My brother-in-law was a part of that mandatory evac.

My sister would've been, but she's down here in S. Florida for my sister's wedding shower.

Ehm... I wasn't invited.

Wedding showers = women only :lol

Maybe Squall is gay. :p

Fine by me...

But he said he's a girl.

Which his profile argues otherwise.

CONFLICTING GENDER!@!@!

Squall, man by day, woman by Holli(day).

This could be fun. And we might go into the Greek alphabet again before this hurricane season is over. Only 4 names left with 5 weeks to go.

5 weeks is kinda pushing it. I know it's technical, but we've already got our several cold fronts coming through the area. I'd imagine that while the absolute season is still active, the relative season is done. Doesn't even look like this storm is going to survive going through what usually is relatively warmer waters.

But then again I'm no meteorologist. All I can say is that I wanted the storms weeks ago. Not anymore, go away storms!

Yeah, November is quiet but I wouldn't call 1 named storm a week busy. Especially since most of them won't even become a hurricane or make landfall anywhere. The Wilma (landfall) anniversary was a few days ago so it'll be nothing like that year, but having another Alpha and Beta is in the realm of possibility.
