With the minor league regular season wrapping up this weekend I thought I would offer a recap of the Marlins affliates and review their seasons. Probably the best minor league team for the Marlins in 2011 was the Gulf Coast League Marlins. They ended up with the GCL's best record, but lost the best of three championship series to the Yankess in the third game. They were paced on the mound by Austin Brice who went 6-0 with a 2.96 ERA and James Nygren 4-1 with 1.36 ERA and 6 saves.

In Jamestown the Jammers remained around .500 for most of the season and still have some excitement for the season as Jose Fernandez will make his first professional start on Friday. He made his professional debut this past weekend throwing two scoreless innings for GCL Marlins. Their season ends Sunday.

The big highlight in Jupiter was Kyle Jensen who was named the Florida State League Player of the Year, this despite spending most of August with Jacksonville. He joins Logan Morrison in being named FSL POY. The Hammerheads as a whole struggled throughout the season finishing well below .500.

Jacksonville also struggled as they were unable to clinch a third straight Southern League Championship. The Suns did send Brad Hand and Chris Hatcher to The Show. Hand should return in September and could be joined by Jhan Marinez.

As for New Orleans their season can be best summed up with the news that their trainer was named trainer of the year for the PCL. They could see several players promoted after the season ends on Monday, including Alex Sanabia, Elih Villanueva, Ozzie Martinez Chris Coghlan, Donnie Murphy and possibly Matt Dominguez.

Greensboro which appeared dead in the water early in the 2nd half went on a run where they won 16 of 21 and their series this weekend will determine if they get a playoff spot in the South Atlantic League. The Grasshoppers have been paced by Christian Yelich, who was named to the SAL season all-star team, hitting over .300 with 13 HR's and 30 SB's. The Grasshoppers also featured J.T. Realmuto hitting around .290 with 11 HR's, Mark Canha around .280 with 24 HR 83 RBI, Marcell Ozuna .265 24 HR 69 RBI and Isaac Galloway .240 15 HR 51 RBI 17 SB. If these guys can develop they could provide some depth postion wise for the organization

How has J.T. Realmuto been doing? Do you guys think he could become a good MLB catcher? Is he too old for his league or something, because those .290's pretty good.

Realmuto is looking real impressive....shaky start but has hit all of his 12 HRs in the 2nd half. He's also stole 13 bases in 19 chances this season while hitting .290+ and throwing out 43% of SB attempts. Looking like a 5-tooler right now.

 

Yelich is a freak. No explanation needed. He and Realmuto are in my TOP 100 prospects right now, and those are my two favorites among Marlins prospects right now.

He's not too old for the league this is his first real year playing professionally after playing just a handful of games in 2010. He looks like a far better prospect than Skippy at this point.

christian yelich has got to be in the top 25-30 prospects going into next year. kid is a beast. he has all the tools offensively and i dont know a thing about him defensively.

 

I wouldnt give up on skipworth for another 2 years. he better show some more promise next year but wtf was the organization thinking putting him from a ball to jacksonville instead of going to jupiter? of all the guys they didnt send to jupiter it would be the guy who is struggling as a hitter? i know it isnt a hitters park but come on.

 

also, kyle jensen and also bryan peterson are making it look to me like gaby sanchez is extremely expendable because lomo is a 1b.

 

we have no pitching in the organization however that is anywhere close to being ready and good in the majors. rasmussen looks good and so does james but they are a year or 2 away.

In person, I liked what I saw out of realmuto more the skipworth. Seems to be solid defensively too. Mark canhah came out of know where it seems like. Noah perio might not make it big but he reminds me of Bonifacio alittle bit.

Greensboro scores three times in the tenth to clinch the South Atlantic Leagues North Division and reach the playoffs for the first time as a Marlins affliate. The Grasshoppers will play the Hickory Crawdads in the first round of the playoffs

Congratulations to Greensboro as they've advanced to the finals in the SAL. Further accolades go to Marlins minor leaguer OF Jesus Solorzano of the GCL Marlins as he was named to the league all-star team and Kevin Mattison named the Southern League's "Hustler" of the year. Also from BA Kyle Jensen and A J Ramos were named all-stars on the High A team.

Baseball America is releasing their Top Prospects by league starting with rookie leagues and progressing up the ladder. So far they've released the list for both Gulf Coast League and New York Penn League. In the GCL the Marlins placed Jesus Solarzano-OF, eleventh on the list and Austin Brice-P, nineteenth. In the NY-P Jamestown pitcher Jose Urena at fifth.

• The Marlins on Monday named RHP Michael Brady their Minor League Pitcher of the Year and OF Christian Yelich their Minor League Player of the Year. Both played for Class A Greensboro.
  Brady, 24, went 7-1 with 18 saves in 22 opportunities with a 1.91 ERA (61 1/3 IP/13 ER) in 48 relief appearances with the Grasshoppers.
  Yelich, 19, batted .312 in 122 games for the 'Hoppers. It was the third-highest average among South Atlantic League hitters.

Brady was drafted in 2009, but signed late out of college, he pitched professionally for the first time in 2010 with Jamestown, so low-A was his best option for this season, He did get promoted to Jacksonville for a game this season also. He should start at Jupiter and I could see based on what was at Jupiter this year could get promoted to Jacksonville during 2012.

BA top prospects for SAL no real surprise that Bryce Harper was top prospect. Greensboro placed Christian Yelich-of at number 5, Marcell Ozuna-of at number 7 and J. T. Realmuto at 13. There are a lot of great prospects in this league, so it helps put the Grasshoppers championship in perspective!

As for FSL the Hammerheads placed none on the prospects list, hopefully they're placing Kyle Jensen on the Southern League prospect list

Well BA just doesn't respect Kyle Jensen's prospect status as he was left off Southern League (along with FSL) top-20 prospect list. No Suns players were included, same as Jupiter.

Dominguez is the #14 rated prospect in PCL according to BA, Arizona Fall League has started and Dominguez is one of eight Marlins farmhands playing for the Surprise Saguaros. Kevin Mattison had a great game on Saturday going 4-4 with a walk and a triple. Alex Sanabia got the win!

Christian Yelich's fist-pumping walk-off playoff homer was just about as dramatic as it sounds. Did we mention it came in the 15th inning, off the bat of a heralded first-round pick?

The Greensboro slugger's longball to beat Hickory on Sept. 7 was voted by baseball fans as the Homer of the Year in the Minors, besting a similar walk-off drive by another first-rounder, Bryce Harper. In fact, Yelich's two-run homer beat out shots like Shane Robinson's walk-off grand slam, Billy Hamilton's inside-the-parker, Russ Canzler's game-winning homer in the Triple-A All-Star Game and Kila Ka'aihue's walk-off shot that sent Omaha to the Pacific Coast League Finals.
