Don't know about Goya. I've only ever drank...

YESSSSSSSSSSSS!!!!! I couldn't find a small pic of Hatuey on the first page (too lazy to scroll).

How could something that smells so bad be drinkable?

Anyone? Anyone?

Hey, so I know this thread is old as all hell, but I'm now studying HFCS and weight gain (or not gain) in my Advanced Exercise Phys class, so if anyone still cares (did anyone ever care?), I can share all the cutting edge research and information as I sit in class for three hours on Friday (9am-12pm)!

Why don't you take really good notes then explain it to us from home via a webcast. And so we're not bored to death, do it naked. :p

Seriously though, I am interested as I'm worried about drinking to much soda. But I drink a fair amount and I still weigh only 105 lbs, and I'll be 35 in January. So I would think that it would only exacerbate existing weight issues someone might have. Or maybe I just have awesome genes.

Happy troll.

But please, do share madame Hayesluv.

Yeah.... Hayes doesn't do it for me, the way Bakes did... I need a new love/name.

Okay, so fructose goes through the body down a different pathway than glucose does. By going down a different pathway, it fails to activate insulin secretion. Insulin (by binding to receptors in the central nervous system) inhibits food intake. There is also evidence that insulin is also involved in the release of leptin. Leptin is also involved in inhibiting hunger once you're full, and by stopping the insulin, you stop these both, leading to an insatiable appetite and consequently, weight gain. Mind you, many of these studies have been done on mice, dogs and hamsters, but you need only look up a picture of mice/leptin to see the effects of knocking it out. My prof said this part is pretty much considered by the "experts" (his work is in muscle disuse atrophy and stuff about the respiratory system) as nonnegotiable.

Also, high intakes of fructose (like those in most American diets) can lead to an increase in Uric Acid, which among other things is thought to cause metabolic syndrome. This part my prof called "more complicated"

tl;dr

Aww, I'm assuming you meant the cheeks your grammy pinches and frame your smile!

Shown here: Cheeks

By pathways, I meant those on the cellular level. Where carbs and stuff like glucose is broken down one way, fructose, like that found in soda (and fruit) is broken down in a different way to make energy. Your body, not used to the amount of fructose we now eat, doesn't have as many receptors (to bring the molecules into the cells or to break the molecules down), so you don't get an insulin response. By preventing an insulin response, your body then doesn't know it's full, so you just keep eating and eating. I hope this makes more sense. I'm a terrible teacher, just ask ctina.

FYI: They say over 50 grams is too much and the level where you can start to develop all the complications I've (more or less?) described, like insulin resistance. Average American intake I think is now around 70 grams.
