Cola Wars: Coca Cola v. Pepsi

I'd imagine he's referring to taste considering natural sugar certainly has a better taste...

I don't buy the whole 'HFCS is worse for you' stuff. It's sugar, and everything should be dealt in moderation. A can of soda with that much sugar isn't any better for you either way.

Most people who love Coke will tell you that it's crisp and it's better than Pepsi because (while it may be extremely sugary) you're not getting that extremely sugary feel.

In Throwback you get it. It's crisp too. Pepsi Throwback blows regular Coke out of the water.

Pepsi wins in my book because they have given wide distribution to a real sugar (non HFCS) soda. Until Coke matches that, they are second best.

Because of taste, or health concerns, or something else (or some combination)?

It's a combination of both, but I place a much greater emphasis on the taste. Non-HFCS soda is smoother, has a less syrupy mouth-feel, and doesn't have an obnoxious aftertaste.

They don't really contain the same sugars at even concentrations, though. Real sugar is made from sucrose, while HFCS is mostly fructose. The difference is that they contain different ratios of glucose and fructose when metabolized. Real sugar has more of the former while HFCS has much more of the latter. The cells of the body metabolizes glucose readily to create energy, but the liver is necessary in order to metabolize the fructose. Theoretically, long term consumption of fructose at high concentrations could be taxing on the liver. The problem is that there really hasn't been a conclusive study yet that has accounted for "normal" human consumption of HFCS.

In other words, real sugar is theoretically healthier, but normal consumption of HFCS has not yet proven to be harmful.

HFCS has been linked to certain health concerns; there's a reason the corn industry lobbied for the name "Corn Sugar." HFCS has been linked to higher triglyceride levels and even an increase in weight gain as compared to those that just eat table sugar (sucrose).

Also, you mention "moderation" but it's nearly impossible to keep in moderation something as ubiquitous as HFCS when, as it was much cheaper than table sugar, was put in like everything (less so these days because of the current scandal around them and subsidized corn going to the production of ethanol).

Also, the body prefers to metabolize fructose into fat, which could help to explain some of the current obesity trends we see in the US (along with less gym time and more tv time and a whole host of other things).

Idk, in my opinion, despite what www.sweetsurprise.com says, I'll stick to natural sugars. Btw, they lobbied the FDA to say that they're a natural sugar because the sugar extracted from the cornstarch (or beets, my favorite food ever) never actually touches the enzymes breaking it down. Are you kidding me?? They won. HFCS is now considered a natural food product.

/end rant.

P.S. I just realized that my gif looks rude. It wasn't meant to be. -__-

That's true, but I mean, the massive usage of HFCS didn't even really start until like the '80s which even if I wasn't exactly born yet, wasn't THAT long ago, so it's not as though science has caught up and with such strict regulations of what you can and can't do in terms of research, it would have to be some sort of longitudinal or cohort study where you have to watch what's happening as it's happening. There have been animal studies (rats) and they haven't looked too good for HFCS.

We're deadlocked at 9 a piece on the brands and 10-8 in favor of coca cola as the cola.

I really thought there'd be a resounding yes to Coca Cola and perhaps a slightly less favorable but still favorable yes towards Coca Cola products.

Interesting though...

I used to be a Coca-Cola person. Used to be since after 35 years I stopped drinking caffeinated beverages back in April.

Now it's mostly water for me, but I'll drink a Sprite every now and then.

Am I the only one who absolutely hates Mountain Dew?

You're not alone.

I don't understand the love-fest with Mountain Dew. So nasty to me.

And I've said it a few times... I'll only drink it on rare occasions and I'll almost never finish a whole can/bottle. Only if I'm really sugar deprived or thirsty. I enjoy it on rare occasions.

Coke is better.

Sprite is better.

Barqs is better.

Dasani is better.

Pepsi still wins overall just because of Mountain Dew

Dasani might be the worst tasting liquid on the planet.

My take.

Pepsi > Coke.

Sprite > Sierra Mist.

Barq's = Mug. Tie, as they are both easily inferior to A&W.

Aquafina > Dasani. As is the water out of the hose in the backyard.

Mountain Dew > Mello Yello/Surge

Gatorade > Poweraid.

Tropicana > Minute Maid.

Lipton Brisk> Nestea Ice Tea.

Frito-Lay > Uncontested.

Quaker Oats > Uncontested.

Looks like I'm on the Pepsi side though I rarely drink Pepsi these days. Pepsi Throwback is the sh*t though.

Aquafina tastes like the bottle.

I probably should've clarified what I meant but I mean which company offers the best overall lineup of beverages, rather than products.

But uh, say what you'd like about Minute Maid but I don't know how you could say anything that comes from Tropicana isn't utter sh*t. Plus, if we're comparing OJ, Coca-Cola has the whole Simply Orange line.

Also, 9/10 times both Lipton Brisk and Nestea Iced Tea are sh*t.

Let us also not forget the very real competition from the Dr. Pepper/Snapple Group.

loljk RC Cola

That was essentially what I had heard about HFCS, so that was certainly part of my curiousity.

It strikes me as almost the opposite situation from cell phone radiation; as explained to me, cell phone usage and the accompanying radiation theoretically should not be harmful, yet preliminary studies do suggest links between cell phone usage and cancer.

THIS. I bought a bottle today and couldn't finish it, and I was at the gym for over an hour.

ALL caffeinated beverages??? I weep for you!!!! ....I'm on my 8th cup of coffee in the past 24 hours.

Stupid drunk Scots and their blabbering nonsense.

Dont blast it when you've never tried!

How can I try being Scottish?

You do have a bit of a point there and I've come to realize it's the bottle. Actually, today, I refilled one of my fiancee's bottles and realized it tasted the same. I generally use my own bottle and don't buy bottled water often so it's not a huge issue for me.

Pepsi has always had an issue with plastic bottles changing the taste of their liquids (though this happens with just about everything bottled to an extent, which is why everything tastes best out of glass).

But on the other hand, Dasani tastes like the worst thing on the planet. I'd rather eat the bottle.

Has anybody ever heard of red cream soda? Pepsi is supposed to be coming out with one in a couple weeks. I had no idea it even existed until a customer asked me about it a few days ago. I then asked a Pepsi vendor about it a few minutes later, and shockingly they were in the know.

I just did some Googling. I had no idea Big Red was red cream soda. I thought it was fruit punch soda or something. Now I really fell bad for that customer. Mr. Pibb isn't red cream soda is it?
